How did Johnson get the job in the first place?

Boris Johnson has resigned from the UK prime ministership, and you have to wonder how he got there in the first place.

He’s always seemed a bit of a loose cannon, better known for his stunts, outrageous pronouncements, crazy hair and complicated personal life (the number of children he has is still up for debate) than his statesmanship or legacy of public service.

A former employer Max Hastings described him as “unfit for national office”.

Mr Hastings warned in 2019: “His premiership will almost certainly reveal a contempt for rules, precedent, order and stability.”

The first crack in Johnson’s downfall though was his habit of hosting parties while the rest of the country was in lockdown.

Not only was it what I suppose the English call ‘poor form’ it was illegal and his lies to cover it up only made it worse.

He lost the confidence of his peers and eventually the top job.

If Johnson was the height of style over substance, give me a worthy but dull PM any day.

They celebrated when he was kicked out of the post of Lord Mayor of London, next minute they vote him in to the top job of Prime Minister of England. More proof of the degeneration of society, not only in England but throughout the world. It is my view that people in politics throughout the world should have to apply for the job and go through a stringent application process, as you would in any other business. They should not be given these jobs simply because they're voted for by the idiot in the street, who has absolutely no idea of who these people are, if they have any qualifications for the job, what they've done in past and what their personality and true beliefs are. These leeches, who in question time, swear and curse each other and 5 minutes later, go into the taxpayer subsidised dining room together, have a five course  meal with free-flowing expensive wines etc, for next to nothing and discuss how well they performed on the day. What a joke. Had enough, Jacka

well said, Jacka, especially your last sentence

He got the job, pure and simple, because he promised he would implement Brexit.

The UK voted for Brexit in the referendum and Theresa May, negotiating as a remainer, was totally useless.

Everyone knew what a clown Boris was but the people wanted Brexit and he delivered it, after a fashion.

If you have 9 minutes to spare, this might make you even more mystified as to how he got the top job and his bizarre private life is even more amazing:

Went to a private school (Eton) of course.  Long accepted by many as the only people who can run a country e.g. the Liberal Party.  How good is that?

Who cares! We have a problem right here with our new government and its leader "Each-way" Albo. This morning on national television he refused to extend the 0.22¢ tax reduction on fuel citing the trillion dollar debt left by the previous government ass the reason. Strangely enough he forgot about the trillion dollar debt problem when he borrowed another $100M to give to Ukraine just last week, an amount much higher than most European countries have stumped up. Labor has known about the debt as they kept telling us before the election all about it so they can't now suggest that it was a surprise. Most of the debt was raised with the support of the then opposition to support workers during the pandemic. In fact Labor is on record saying that the support should have been extended when the government stopped the JobKeeper.

The huge debt began with previous Labor Governments. Time makes people forget.

Pressure during Covid made it inevitable we had to borrow to support the community. So stop winging Mr Albanese.

We should care! Our last mob of smirking, lying and cheating politicians finally just got the boot. Being able to get rid of a bad government periodically (and despite all the snake-oil) is proof that we still actually have a democracy in this country.

I agree with everything that has been said.  We try to help other countries as much as we can but we need to look at what is happening here first.  Give some but also look after your own first.

Vote in a clown and you are bound to end up with government acting like a circus!

Just as we saw in the US with Trump, BoJo lied to the people right from the start with his dishonest Brexit campaign appealing to a naive electorate and just as we saw in the US at least 40% of the electorate is incapable of making a rational decision about the leadership and future of their own country.

What we have seen with all these populist, sometimes despotic right wing 'entitled' leaders be they BoJo, Trump, Morrison, Bolsonaro or Putin is that they all get into office by deceit and remain in office by dishonesty, stunts and lies with little if any progress. Lets hope the people have learnt enought to keep these stuntsmen out.

The Clintons ,Obama and now Biden, if there was ever a more Corrupt Circus than that lot.

The issue of PM in Britain is an issue for British people. We in Australia are probably more Corrupt

than any other Western country, put our own house in order before commentating on Foreign countries.

You seriously misjudge the UK electorate as being naive.  People voted for the clown because he promised them Brexit and the majority of the other MP's were fighting tooth and nail to stop it.
