Hospital parking charges

Has anyone tried visiting a loved one in hospital recently? I have and at 12 midnight, for one and a half hours, i paid $9 to park - car park was empty and it was dark, and felt pretty dangerous. Last night at 8pm i paid $7 for a 45 minute visit to my mum. Do they make more money from car parking than medical services? probably! If i was on a full Age Pesnion, i doubt i could afford to go and see her.

Haven't had to use the hospital car parks for a while. If I have to visit anyone I get dropped off and picked up..however this is an example of the fees for one of the public hospitals...

Visitor Parking Fees

As per the Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre (Delegated Site) By-Laws 1986 visitor parking fees are as follows:

15 mins – 1 hour

$3.30

1 hour – 2 hours

$6.60

2 hours – 3 hours

$9.90

4 hours – 5 hours

$16.50

5 hours – 6 hours

$19.80

6 hours – 7 hours

$23.10

7 hours – 24 hours

$23.10

Patients of Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital may be able to access subsidised parking according to specific criteria. Further information is available on the hospital website. Subsidised parking will also be available to parents and carers of patients at the Perth Children’s Hospital according to specific criteria upon opening.

St John of God..Subiaco(Private)...

Parking is $3.10 per hour or $15.50 per day.

The Mount (Private)..

All day parking for $7

Personally..I don't think close relatives of a patient who's just had an operation should have to pay to park...

Sorry forgot to mention the above relates to Perth..WA..

Thea, there's a free bus service from St John of God hospital to several spots in Subiaco.I know this because one of them nearly hit my car the other day. The driver was quite elderly.

You can afford it Kaye .

hospitals need to diversify their sources of revenue . If not they have to rely solely on the government

that means through higher taxes . Either way you pay

Except that the money goes to the private operators not the hospitals in most cases.

T IS more than that in melbourne,     we have to go to THE ALFRED HOSPITAL  on a regular basis,  it is $7 for the first 2 hours,     even if you are only away 15 minuets,   it is still $7,        then $6 an hour after that,    it was a lot more expensive,    but due to the number of complaints ,   they lowered the charges,       my friend has had breast cancer,   and has to go regularly to see the oncologist,     also the THYROID doc,    which the radiation brought on,   sometimes she is there all day,    and it costs her a fortune,      i think anyone who has to go for treatment that they know is going to take all day,   should be given some sort of concession,         we have to go for my husbands app,    but luckily he is usually out within an hour,   so its not to bad,

Hospital parking is atrocious and very scarce as well --  when you have to attend a hospital and are unable to walk you have to be lucky enough to have someone to drop you off -- and if you have to visit someone it is pitiful!

I have a regular check up at Mercy in Melbourne. My husband drops me at the front door then goes away and parks. I call him when I am finished. We can't afford to park at the hospital. It is exorbitant!

I agree with GrandmaKathleen22also I walk to the hospital from a free park somewhere in the street which has the advantage of good exercise (sometimes several km).  ! realise that for some this maybe a problem if not healthy enough (maybe lack of exercise !! ), insufficient time or worried about security (although that is overblown)

Couldn't agree more.

It's very important for family and friends to be able to visit sick people in hospital, to enable a better recovery. There is a petition on change.org about this issue.

https://www.change.org/p/metro-parking-australia-provide-more-affordable-hospital-parking-for-long-term-patients-and-families

This petition has had a significant impact on government policy, at least in NSW.

In Queensland some public hospital parking fees in the city are exorbitant. For instance at Prince Charles, Chermside:

Casual Rates Per Entry

0.0 – 0.5hrs $4.40

0.5 – 1.0hrs $8.80

1.0 – 1.5hrs $13.20

1.5 – 2.0hrs $17.60

2.0 + hrs     $20.00

Note the very high fees for the 1 to 2 hour period which most visitors would require.

Mater hospital in Waratah (Newcastle) park all day for a flat $4 fee

Epworth in Camberwell, Vic is free for the first 2 hours and $15 per hour after that. This is reasonable when seeing a specialist regularly.

I d not agree with charging for parking at a hospital. People are stressed enough. And visitors should be encouraged not penalised.  I think it's wrong and takes advantage of sick people and visitors.

By the way i am a nurse. And we pay for parking and that's wrong too

On the other hand , you do t want patients visitors hogging the limited parking lots for hours because it's cheap

As a nurse you choose to drive to work and so you should pay for taking up precious real estate
