Homemade Lemonade for Vivity

Viv I use Jackie French's recipe

Homemade Lemonade.

Ingredients

4 cups sugar

2 cups water

 2 cups fresh lemon juice

2 teaspoons citric acid

2 teaspoons tartaric acid

Water or soda water

Ice

mint leaves

Method.

Place sugar and water in a saucepan and bring to the boil.  Simmer for 5 minutes, then add the lemon juice, citric and tartaric acid.   Bring to the boil again, then take off the heat and funnel into sterilised bottles.  Put some of the mixture into a glass and top up with water/soda water (if you like your drink fizzy.)   Add ice, garnish with a sprig of fresh mint or slice of lemon.

Viv I make up a double or triple lot at a time.  I put my bottles in the oven for about 15 mins at 100 C and fill one at a time and screw the lid on.  This makes the syrup keep longer.  Just make sure the bottles PING after as this ensures it is preserved properly as the lid tightens to make a good seal.

You will really hear the bottles PING.    Just keep in a cool place.

also use this recipe for  orange (or a mix of orange & lemon) lime.

I make a pretty mean Ginger Beer too if you want that recipe.

Thanks for that Sandi

So many Recipes get lost in the Chit Chat and it is so hard to try to find them again

Thanks Sandi, looks good, now XMas and New Year are over can start considering other things pity I did not save some glass  wine bottles from XMas to put it in!

Thats a good idea Viv

Save some of the glass wine bottles - I keep one in the car with water for Sweet Thing.

Vivity those wine bottle caps are no good. They don't seal well enough if you make up the extra lots.  I do the extra because I'm basically lazy.  Better to wash up the mess once instead of 2 or three times.

I seal mine in glass fruit juice jars with the stronger lids like jam preserving lids.

You  can always buy some corks ???

Also with large beer bottles you can buy new caps for ...My Italian neighbour makes her own tomato sauce and stores it in beer bottles ... lasts for years.

Tomato Sauce is different Abby.  The vinegar is a preservative.  The lemonade doesn't have that.

But, beer bottles are worth 10 cents each here at the bottloes also they have a stronger top which seals.

I made $100.00 for christmas with my bottles.  We also get money back on some plastic bottles and flavoured milk cartons.

I also don't get many beer bottles.  Only when an occasional visitor drinks beer, we are wine drinkers here and sadly no money back on them.  We could make a small fortune if they did.

Once capped they boil the bottles of tomato sauce in a big pot over a wood babQ and then use the sauce on Pizzas - would not know what is in their recipe.

Wish they would give us some money on bottles - we only get it for tins.

$100 is a good start towards next lot of Christmas drinks :)

BTW I sent you an email

Abby I always use the same method for all my preserves.   It's much quicker than boiling them.

Also the Italians are lucky in that they make it a family day and have heaps of people to help and then they split theirs up amongst the families.  They can make a production line where I only have myself on my pat malone.

I just put the bottles in the oven at 100C for 10 mins and lift one at a time out of the oven to fill and screw the lids on tight.

The bottles I use are the ones that have had the pasta sauce in from the shops.  I get friends to save the bottles for me when they use the bought sauce.  When I have enough bottles I get them just to save the lids for me.  That way I have a supply of lids for free.

No Plastic Lids should be used making preserves
