HELP WANTED

A friend and I are working on a project regarding tackling the inappropriate and inconsistent sentences handed down by the courts. We have collected a number of newspaper articles supporting this theory, but we would prefer to authenticate our complaints with actual court supplied data. My question is, is there a web site which we can access that will tell us the crime and the sentence. We are not interested in names or location? We have the ludicrous situation in the ACT where a man stabbed his mother something like 76 times, and could only be charged with manslaughter because it could not be proved that he intended to murder her!!!! That is an extreme case, but it seems to us that no one considers the victim, be it a bashing, burglary or whatever. We tired of hearing that the perpetrator suffered abuse as a child, or was drunk, or on drugs and is let off with a slap on the wrist.

I have waffled on there, sorry, but I just wanted you to know what we are looking for and why.

I would appreciate any suggestions.

I am not sure that I have any good ideas for you but I would ask my local member of Parliament .....they should know at least where to look for the information and if its not a web site then a couple of phone numbers should at least be helpfull to start with .......Good Luck

Pommy good on you and PLEASE let us know what you come up with as I too am sick to death of this happening--about time they do the time for the crime!!! I am sick of hearing about

"I was on drugs or drunk and didn't know what I was doing" well sorry in my opinion that should make it a double sentence !Also let me know if I also can help by maybe writing letters to help you in your quest.

Thanks so much PlanB, I will certainly keep you informed. We are going to contact our local member, but we also thought a journalist may be able to help us. We need to gather enough documented evidence of inadequate and inappropriate sentences being handed down to make it an issue that cannot be ignored. We are tackling it on a State level at the moment, as laws vary so much between the States.

http://www.cvsa.asn.au/ (Crime Victims Support Association) They might have some figures, as it is their area of concern.

Yes they do vary--I am in NSW--I also think it is dreadful that you seem to be able to get punished if you happen to take action if someone enters your home ---I think if some one enters your home --without permission--you should be able to take whatever action

Thanks to all of you, there are some really good suggestions which we will follow up. We will certainly be getting in touch with the "Victims of Crime" group in the A.C.T. Your support and interest is very much appreciated.

I have just heard on the ABC news that a man convicted of the rape of a child under 10 years old was given a suspended 2 year sentence, because he had already spent 14 months in goal, There is an appeal being mounted regarding the leniency of this sentence. The man actually broke into her bedroom to commit this offence. Inappropriate sentences like this seem to be the norm these days. If the father of this child had caught the offender, what action could he legally take to defend his daughter?????? It just makes my blood boil. that the law is designed to protect the offender not the victim. What a waste of our police resources.

Yes makes my blood boil as well they commit these crimes and get darn all for it--mean while they victims are dead or suffer all their lives--plus many young ones now committing crimes--dreadful crimes--and they can't be named--this I am sure stems from the way they are allowed to get away with anything at school and at home--as the parents don't care or are not allowed to hand out discipline--and neither are the police these days --all because "they have rights" well what about our rights to be able to walk the streets with getting bashed or robbed--and leave our home/cars--without being broken into. Once we never had to lock doors or cars--(Not that that stops them) the police had the right to kick the young ones up the backside and tell them to get on their way--NOW they dare not lay a hand on them--they get away with this at an early age and go on to bigger things later in life.

I am not sure which state you are in but I assume all states have a courts website. For instance in SA the website is www.courts.sa.gov.au from there you can read the judges sentencing remarks which is taken from court transcripts.

Thanks Pom - I am in the ACT. I can see we are going to be kept busy for some time researching this. Hopefully it will all be worth it in the end.

Didn't Stalin send them to Gulag? Lots of hard work would cure them.

They'd think again of reoffending.

Unfortunatelly Stalin also send many innocent people,

like those who were not 'politically correct'.

mmm rings the bell somehow....

mara--there are so many that do not get the punishment they should get after committing heinous crimes--they seem to in and out of jail in no time the law seems to be all over the darn place the way it hands out sentences. Also most of these beasts get out only to do it all again--AND again. I bet if the Father had caught him and attacked him it would have been the Father that would be doing the time and the criminal would have sued him--that seems to be the way it works these days is it not
