Help anyone?

I have had two e-mails from separate members who cannot get in here now!
I have no answer for either as I am able to log in but many more learned computer
people here than me so can anyone tell me what I could tell them so they get back in please?

Should we leave the computer on 24/7 to just go to sleep when we get Wireless Broadband next week? or still turn it off at night.

Phyl.

Hi Phil, I am far from being a computer nerd, but 2 comments. We leave our computer on 24 hours a day, but most times we have a problem, it is fixed by turning off & back on again, or by disconnecting the modem from the server.

Having said that, I must comment that it seems to take an unbeleivable time to get up new pages, or go back on this site.

What browser are they using.

Firefox does not work to see threads here.

Internet Explorer is s .. l.. o. . w....

I just tried Opera browser.

It is faster and loads the page good.

I think I wil;l stick with Opera for this site.

Opera is free and available at http://www.opera.com/

It takes a little getting used to but has tabbed browsing.

.

The longer you leave the computer on, the slower it will get - eventually needing a reboot.

Why leave it on when you are asleep - save electricity and switch it off at the power point.

Gerry

Thank you both Innes and Gerry......

That is just what I wanted to know Gerry! I was not sure if because the comp. went to sleep so to speak it would cost to leave it on and also if it gets slower then it does not need all that sleep....:) thank you kindly.

Something good happens everyday and yippee we are getting Braodband the week coming and for only $30 a month - in the words of Big Kev. I'm excited :)

Phyl.

Who are you getting your broadband from Phyl and what's your limit? I'm still on dial up, but thinking of going broadband fairly soon. There's just so many plans out there.

Thanks GerryO. I have just downloaded Opera. Looking forward to seeing how it pans out.

Wireless Broadband will be great :)

Thank you Gerry I have sent your info. off to the two people not able to get in here.

Phyl.

Gerry, I have started using Opera. 2 comments. It has trouble locating some common sites, but, it is so quick!!! It is even speeding up ''About Seniors''.

Thanks again

To Phyl. Sounds like you have found a good deal. But be careful. Our normal usage was under 1 gig until my wife discovered Face Book & U Tube. Now we use 6 gig & I am forced to listen to Classical music, Idol UK & Idol USA together with many down loads of short videos that she would scream at if I had found them. Before you get upset, I am NOT having a shot at women, in general. There are probably 6 or 8 men in Oz who do the same thing

That's what I'm looking into Innes - I guess if I have broadband, I'd go to a whole lot more sites and download a whole lot more. I know that there are some I'd like to go to, but because of the slowness of dial up I've resisted. My own personal use so far has been less than 1 gig per month, but give me broadband!!!,

Phyl, when you are getting your wireless broadband, ask the installer to make sure it is secure and cannot be used by others.

Unprotected wireless broadband can be tapped into by someone with a laptop who is within 300 metres of your modem. It does happen.

They could be sitting in a car in the street or in a neighbours house.

People who hack wireless broadband can download files at your expense and use your megabyte allowance, leaving you with a bill for excess usage.

Gerry

Oh no!!!!!! Thank you for that we will !!!!!!That is dreadful...

Also Gerry do you know anything about a radio for the internet at all please?

They have them at Aldi for $124 I think it was, but it says I have to buy a router and as Peter is away (don't think he would know anyway but he may) would you know if the radio would be easy to install? re just plug it in? and whatever the router thingy is, which one would I need to buy? I cannot get my beloved 3AW here in the Valley at all as three stations come in over the top at most times and if not three always one or two.....I like to listen after 10 p.m. evenings and do via the net but as Peter has hooked a long cord from our living room to our bedroom it is o.k. but I have no control over the controls at all so would love to be able to turn it up or down or change stations myself.

Thanks for your great input and by the way we have only been married 34 years so of course still on our honeymoon and it is getting better every day. How lucky is any person to find "The exact right person to share their life" with I ask"

Phyl.

You can listen to 3aw at http://www.blindradio.com/opener/openavu.phtml?r=4363

without spending any money as long as you have a media player on your computer.

I use winamp.

For a list of Australian online radio radio stations go to :

http://www.blindradio.com/online-live-internet-radio-stations/australia-au-0/

.

The down side is it uses up your megabytes.

I tried one station and used 1MB in 3 minutes.

I don't know anything about the thing they have at Aldi ( we don't have Aldi here)

.

A router is something you connect to your modem.

From there, there is a connection to your computer and you can attach other devices such as a laptop (You can then have 2 people on the internet at the same time sharing the one connection)

I guess that the internet radio would connect to the router, but remember your usage. All depends what size plan you get from your internet provider.
