This Thread is about how a person who had a stroke in May 2021 is experiencing life AFTER the stroke. My Ups and Downs.

Has anyone had radiation treatment in Australia over the last couple of years please?

Husband has just been given the costing and it doesn't make any sense.

Medicare pays $20,000

If you have to have radiation treatment you are expected to pay a further $620,00 a week for five weeks.

Even if you are on a Part Pension or Pension!

Let us know about the reply the the University of NSW's Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing after a stroke gives you

I wrote last night and I don't expect a reply but should I do I will mention it here unless you have a private email to contact me?

I guess this lady wanted to brighten her life up a little!

So sorry to hear about your recovery taking a dive yesterday

and your blood pressure blood going through the roof

Hope you went to see your GP

Wishing you a speedy recovery

Thanks Suze, no I just stayed home and rested in bed and slept as much as I could.

The GP cannot do anything anyway, the last time this happened my husband called for the ambulance and off I went, I was told the hospital was only interested in people that have blood pressure over 200, it was nearly 170 and by the time I get to 155 I really feel awful.    I guess some people are affected more than others.  The reading when I am feeling good is between 115 to 130.     Once the GP said that mine should never reach 145!     So I think the GPs and the Hospital have different opinions!    I just tried to drink  more water and rest taking my medication.

I think in my case it is a reaction to various foods and I see an allergist, he knows I have a reaction to histamine but he admits that scientists/doctors have no answer for people with this situaiton!  So I find drinking a lot of water seems to slow the blood pressure down for me anyway.

So I cannot have bananas and citrus as they both put my BP up.   I have not had any for ages.  Even Lemonade is a issue!

Celia, I am so sorry to read that your blood pressure has spiked again.

Do you have special medication for it.

Also have you taken your blood pressure before and after drinking water?

I was in hospital with very low blood pressure and was directed to drink copious amounts of water to bring it up.

So sorry to hear your news Celia, it must be so frustrating, hope things improve soon for you.  Stay safe.

Thanks ladies for your concern, but this is what I am getting use to, I don't take the blood pressure tablets all the time I have to keep a note of my readings during the day.   I have medications yes but cannot take the medication for high blood pressure all the time as my BP goes low!

I have an implant for irregular issues.

You sure have some challenges to overcome Celia.  I hope it gets a little bit easier for you every day.

Thanks Leonie.

I am not the worst in the family, husband as I say has now a second cancer, he was given a clearance for the Leukemia, another member of the family has Lymphona and just had an infection with a nasty cough from her grandson!  [now on antibiotics and chemo]

Did some gardening this morning and wacked my right arm and I am on blood thinners!

So that was a nice mess to clean up.

But I can always find someone worse off than me.

PS  wemt to Bunnings yesterday and went to put some seedings in and some plants for a big planter out the back then I grazed my arm on the brick wall!   I have been trying to stop the blood flow for about 20 hours.  Was going to the doctors but it seems to have stopped now thank goodness washed it in Dettole to keep it clean.   Just the birthday present I do not need!

Celia,  you do seem in the wars.  Take care.

Do you see a specialist?

Re: " Just the birthday present I do not need!  "

Is it your Birthday Celia ???

Have a cake anyhow

Happy Birthday Celia Image Wishes? - YouTube

Thank you Axel, Seze and Hola for your good wishes, yes it is my birthday today, I remember years ago that it was also our Prime Minister, which I cannot remember his name?

Here are a few other people that have birthdays today .

Famous Birthdays on December 20 - On This Day

Husband and I have just returned from having lunch and on the way out a couple with a little boy about three or four was walking into the restaurant, he was holding a little truck, he saw my husband on crutches and he walked backwards and his mother joined him and let my husband pass and then I came and bent down to thank he, he had the biggest smile on his little face it was so sweet, then his dad walked backwards and opened the door for my husband, so I          thanked him too, it was touching.

Prime Minister in the 50s a Liberal who had his birthday on 20th Dec, I also remember a tv personality who had his too.

My memory is getting worse I cannot remember their names.

Thank you for your good wishes on my birthday, I am 77 today!!

[Bob Menzies was one of them!]

Looks if the WA Christmas will fall flat with the youngsters not having their night clubs open.

Fancy coming into WA with the virus and spoiling spoiling Christmas.  I just hope this case doen't spread far far and wide.

A stroke happens when blood flow to a part of your brain is cut off. Without the oxygen in blood, brain cells start dying within minutes. To help prevent a stroke, learn about the causes and the things that can raise your odds of getting one.

Types

A stroke can happen in two main ways: Something blocks the flow of blood, or something causes bleeding in the brain.

Ischemic stroke. In 8 out of 10 strokes, a blood vessel that takes blood to your brain gets plugged. It happens when fatty deposits in arteries break off and travel to the brain or when poor blood flow from an irregular heartbeat forms a blood clot.

Hemorrhagic stroke. It's less common than an ischemic stroke but can be more serious. A blood vessel in your brain balloons up and bursts, or a weakened one leaks. Uncontrolled high blood pressure and taking too much blood thinner medicine can lead to this kind of stroke.

Some people have what's called a transient ischemic attack (TIA). This "mini stroke" is due to a temporary blockage. It doesn't cause permanent brain damage, but it raises your odds of having a full-scale stroke.

Causes

You can treat some conditions that make you more likely to have a stroke.

Other things that put you at risk can't be changed:

High blood pressure. Your doctor may call it hypertension. It's the biggest cause of strokes. If your blood pressure is typically 130/80 or higher, your doctor will discuss treatments with you.

Tobacco. Smoking or chewing it raises your odds of a stroke. Nicotine makes your blood pressure go up. Cigarette smoke causes a fatty buildup in your main neck artery. It also thickens your blood and makes it more likely to clot. Even secondhand smoke can affect you.

Heart disease. This condition includes defective heart valves as well as atrial fibrillation, or irregular heartbeat, which causes a quarter of all strokes among the very elderly. You can also have clogged arteries from fatty deposits.

Diabetes. People who have it often have high blood pressure and are more likely to be overweight. Both raise the chance of a stroke. Diabetes damages your blood vessels, which makes a stroke more likely. If you have a stroke when your blood sugar levels are high, the injury to your brain is greater.

Weight and exercise. Your chances of a stroke may go up if you're overweight. You can lower your odds by working out every day. Take a brisk 30-minute walk, or do muscle-strengthening exercises like pushups and working with weights.

Medications. Some medicines can raise your chances of stroke. For instance, blood-thinning drugs, which doctors suggest to prevent blood clots, can sometimes make a stroke more likely through bleeding. Studies have linked hormone therapy, used for menopause symptoms like hot flashes, with a higher risk of strokes. And low-dose estrogen in birth control pills may also make your odds go up.

Age. Anyone could have a stroke, even babies in the womb. Generally, your chances go up as you get older. They double every decade after age 55.

Family. Strokes can run in families. You and your relatives may share a tendency to get high blood pressure or diabetes. Some strokes can be brought on by a genetic disorder that blocks blood flow to the brain.

Gender. Women are slightly less likely to have a stroke than men of the same age. But women have strokes at a later age, which make them less likely to recover and more likely to die as a result.

Race. Strokes affect African-Americans and nonwhite Hispanic Americans much more often than any other group in the U.S. Sickle cell disease, a genetic condition that can narrow arteries and interrupt blood flow, is also more common in these groups and in people whose families came from the Mediterranean, the Middle East, or Asia.

Celia, are any of those causes listed by Suze relevant to your stroke?

I am aware that some people come back from a stroke.  I do hope that given time, you will also.

Also Celia it is great that you are so active on YLC forums.  I think this is important for you.

And I think I can speak for the others.  We are all concerned about your progress and rooting for your recovery.

It must be quite stressful with not only your stroke situation, but your husband's condition as well.

Hi Axel,

Thank you for those comments and thank you Suze for putting this up.

Yes one of those was my issue, it was a combination of stress with family health issues and to boot the on coming virus.    I was doing everything by myself over those months.

It is frustrating over a 24 hour period with no email communication also, the Server seems to have crashed and it is Christmas so we have to go without.

It is interesting I can write on this but not able to use the email facility.

My writing still gives me issue, for instance I replace the wrong letter in words like facility I had written 'v' instead of the 'f'

Over the last ten days I have gone backwards with my reading also!

The Pope yesterday

We are not Roman Catholic but of all the Pops I have seen in photos all my life I like this one the best.

Hi Celia, Apparently it is still going ahead.

Thanks Hola;   these photos I have selected has made me reflect on this year.

I hope our society doesn't turn to this if we are short of food, do we take our supermarkets for granted?

What do you mean RnR?

One of my ambitions in life was to do this, I never achieved it sadly.

Celia - I have a niece and nephew who are brilliant ice skaters and now are coaches. I remember when they were younger and showed great talent.  The young man skated with the Disney on Ice parade when they came to Aust. many years ago.

Oh how lovely Hola, I do love to watch the Ice skating Championships on the tv!

Do you remember this couple?   Image result for derval and dean ice skaters photo

We went to see them in Perth when the appeared after their win it was lovely to see I love their music too!  'Bolero'.
