Have gambling ads had their day?

Is gambling the new cigarettes?

Once upon a time cigarette advertising was everywhere. In the cinema, on the tele, writ large on billboards and very definitely at sporting events. Everyone of a certain age remembers the Marlboro man or Paul Hogan flogging Winfields. Then came the highly successfully campaign to have them removed from public spaces. Looks like gambling ads might be headed the same way.

While adults can make up their own mind, teens and children at sporting events or watching at home are exposed to constant gambling ads. It normalises what can be a highly destructive habit. Is their time up?

I loathe the ever increasing gambling ads ... particularly the garbled "gamble responsibly" at the end played at mega speed.

Would love to see them banned.

Yes, Ban the Lot. There are more and more of them on now, even during the time when children are watching.

Just STOP them!

BAN THEM. Absolutely. They are as bad, if not worse than the cigarette advertisements, and despite their "and please remember to gamble responsibly" warnings, are just as unethical, and potential harmful to certain individuals and their families.

I absolutely hate them and think they should be taken off.  A gambling addiction can destroy individuals and families.

Totally agree these gambling ads are destructive but how much is being given in political "donations" to the political parties? As long as that is allowed the ads will remain.

Our political system is being corrupted and we don't have an ICAC to shine a light on it. No need to wonder why as the answer is plain to see in that too many in power want the current situation to continue.

Yes, definitely ban all of them. I get really annoyed when I see these ridiculous gambling ads, some of them would cost a fortune to make, but then the  companies can easily afford it, let's face it, the gamblers are paying for their production

Many people don't realise the damage that is done to families in regards to gambling. It's destructive.

The Australian Hotels Association (AHA) and Clubs Australia will fight with millions $ to ensure that politicians and lobbyists are dissuaded from any reforms of gambling.

One has to wonder why any politician would support the efforts of the AHA and Clubs Australia when hard concrete evidence supports such reforms and more. Remember former minister Peter Garrett says he refused a bribe stuffed in an envelope but later changed his story about an alleged bribe, Hmmmm

All credit to Andrew Wilkie and Tim Costello for their continued push and commitment for gambling reform in particular pokie machines. Remember how Andrew Wilkie was shafted by Julia Gillard and the Labor party. LNP won't listen to him and his gambling reforms either.

And online betting is just a scam. If you keep winning they either close your account or make it very difficult to place a bet.

Tim Costello - End Gambling Ads

It's criminal to entice young people to gambling. Yep all ads should be banned.

Absolutely agree.

When I mentioned a friend had lost $2000.00 at one sitting at a pokey machine, was told that another person had lost $200,000.   Her sons just said 'as long as she is happy',

Many hotels actually encourage pensioners to play the pokies - providing them with free coffee and tea.

Dishonesty comes in many guises.

Ban all gambling ads and also all alcohol ads as well. Both are poison to society. Poker machines should be dumped in the ocean so that at least they'll become a useful artificial reef.

Totally agree - ban the ads completely. The ads themselves are bad enough in dominating the advertising time on TV, but it's criminal that they can show them while children and young people are still watching in the evening. They grow up thinking that gambling is something everyone normally does - and before they know it, they're addicted. I know from experience within my own family - it breaks my heart. The only reason governments don't do anything about it is because they love the tax revenue gambling generates. If they were as responsible as they like to proclaim themselves, they'd protect the population from this and find other sources of revenue, or cut spending on themselves!

Perhaps instead of gambling ads they should show the devastation gambling brings.

The research commissioned by the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation showed there were an average of 948 gambling ads broadcast daily on free-to-air TV in Victoria in 2021.

The data showed the gambling industry spent $287.2 million on advertising in Australia last year, an increase of $15.9 million from 2020.

Full ABC story.

It is still tantamount to robbery.  Robbery of a vulnerable group of people.

It's the young I am concerned about. Parents should be sitting down with their children and having a conversation.  Although I agree with the banning of ads, it is not the only solution.

I am particularly amazed at the number of seniors (especially pensioners) who indulge in this devastating activity. Surely something should be done about this.

Yes. Sophie you are absolutely correct on all counts.

As I have mentioned before, many hotels encourage pensioners to play the pokies by providing them with free tea and coffee and ensuring they are comfortable.  In one hotel I know, a special room is set aside for them.  To my mind this is  disgusting behavior on the part of these establishments.
