Growing number of Aussies hesitant to visit their doctor in person

As COVID cases continue to rise in Australia, and lockdowns and restrictions are placed on cities and regions, new research has revealed that 40 per cent of Australians are reluctant to visit their GP this winter, over heightened fears they might contract a virus.

The findings, from a survey of an independent panel of 1000 Australians, emphasise a need for an online alternative to in-person GP consultations, especially during peak flu season and the pandemic.

The InstantScripts commissioned survey found that 28 per cent of respondents were concerned about contracting a cold or flu-like illness during a GP visit, while just over a quarter (26 per cent) fear catching COVID-19. The research also found that 26 per cent of Australians have avoided a visit to their GP within the past 12 months in fear of contracting an illness.

However, just over two-thirds of those polled (68 per cent) said they would be open to using a telehealth service (GP service over the phone) instead this winter.

InstantScripts founder Dr Asher Freilich, a registered GP, says: “The highly contagious nature of the Delta variant means many people are reluctant to put themselves at heightened risk of infection by visiting their GP, especially after the recent outbreaks in Melbourne and Sydney. While you should never forgo a GP visit for serious health issues, non-urgent matters like prescriptions or medical certificates can easily take place over the phone.

“InstantScripts’ research highlights a growing need for reliable telehealth services throughout Australia, where patients can consult a certified GP without having to leave their home. Around 16.5 million telehealth consultations have taken place in 2021 alone, as an increasing number of Australians opt for phone consultations over in-person visits. Not only does this help facilitate social distancing during the pandemic, if also provides a convenient alternative to in-person appointments.”

Are you hesitant about visiting your GP for an in-person consultation while the Delta variant of COVID-19 is spreading around NSW?

I prefer visiting in person. Precautions can be taken for safety of both doctor and patient.

There are situations where physical exam is necessary, and I find the whole internet process can be frustrating and limiting, especially where technology can be unreliable.

And there are those who do not have internet access, because of distance, poverty, and so on. Nothing can replace face to face contact, in my opinion.

While community virus spread in Queensland remains contained I have no hesitation in visiting my local GP. However if the virus was widespread I would use a telehealth service instead.

Really? I much prefer visiting my GP in person!  A good doctor can diagnose you from watching you closely colour of your skin, muscle tone, eyes, etc, there are so many signs that give clues to our health or disease.  As for the virus, I'm not afraid at all of it, just look at the figures!  No more deaths from it than any normal flu.  Just this time they are making a big deal out of it, with a lot of collateral damage to the economy, our health and wellbeing physically and economically.
