Greens Strong in Queensland

Today's Newspoll for Queensland confirms the Greens will be key players at the next state election in 2012 including the potential to make strong challenges in a number of seats.

As with the federal election, most of the vote that Labor has lost has not gone to the LNP, it has gone to the Greens and Independents. Despite massive dissatisfaction with the state Labor government, the LNP has only had a small rise in support

Queensland showed the strongest swing to the Greens of any state in the country at the federal election, and this Newspoll shows the same potential is there at state level.

Watch out Anna Bligh!

From what I have hear Anna is hated in Qld, she has sold off almost everything ?

I don't think many understand what is actually being proposed to be sold in Qld.

In 2008-09 the businesses up for sale generated $320 million, or less than 1 per cent of the Government's revenue.

If sold the Government will save $1.8 billion every year in interest payments on the borrowings needed to sustain them as viable businesses.

The government wants to sell commercial businesses. They are selling the coal freight arm of Queensland Rail, not passenger services. They are selling the tolling rights to the Gateway Motorway, not the bridge and road itself.

And with Queensland Forestry, they will continue to own the land and lease it to a private company to grow and sell timber to private companies.

In other words they are selling commercial businesses to be run by private companies.

She is selling out Queensland and those who voted her in need their heads testing - well of course anyone who votes Labor these days needs their heads testing. Say no more you get the government you deserve - sadly we also get it.

Labor cannot manage money when will you lot here even get that through your heads ? They always run up debts.

If Labor could manage money they would never need to sell assets to pay off the loans they run up on useless projects - as recently outlined in Labor in Canberra - insulation and school halls rorted.

also Labor has introduced this stupid idea of running government owned enterprises as corporate style businesses which costs far more and running as government dept. Also usually don't run as well because no incentive and the shareholders have no say.

and then Coalition usually has to sell off something in order to pay down the debts run up by labor or forever pay huge interest bills.

How much will it cost us for Federal Labor's in interest bill - never know now will we not until we get rid of them and look at the books.

Would you be so kind to post facts instead of a lot of right wing fanatical ravings ?

Queensland is supposed to be enjoying a mining boom.

How come we "need" to sell off public assets?

Basically Kika, a mining boom eventually pays some State royalties, which

the Federal Government is attempting to wipe out & the mining profits

attract tax & later on, super tax, whick all go to the Federal Government, not

the Consolidated revenue of the States.

Queensland is supposed to be enjoying a mining boom.

The reason is because of the number of people who are moving from the southern states to Queensland.

More people means more infrastructure required.

Queensland is the fastest growing state in Australia according to the ABS.

While most of Australia's population increase is due to overseas migration, Queensland recorded the highest increase in people moving from other states.

In the five years to June 2009 the increase in Queensland's population accounted for 29 per cent of Australia's population growth.

Lots of Victorians move to Queensland, plus many spend the winter there too

You're right, fwed. S.E. Qld. is now over-populated, in my opinion. More infrastructure will encourage even more people to come to the area, and the some of the looming problems will be food, clean water and, not too far away, affordable fuel.

There is no excuse for cramming so many people into S.E. Qld. Our wildlife is dying out, our small amount of fertile farmland is being either built over or explored for future gas mining, and we are building ever more roads, bridges and tunnels. The latter are highly tolled, and privatised, of course. The recently completed Clem7 tunnel under the Brisbane River, is already close to bankruptcy as few cars are using it - even with a temporarily reduced toll amount. Brisbane has become an ugly city, much like many other modern cities in the world (with just a few beautiful places still left).

As to the carbon footprint coming from the S.E. corner - don't get me started!!!

The State Govt here see the solution as bringing even more people here. And they rave on about "sustainability". I find it all very depressing.

Yes so many high rise in the likes of Surfers etc--I remember when it was very nice MANY years ago but now has become rather over the top. Trying to copy and also naming places from the USA ie "Miami" etc etc

Elderwoman, a lot of what you say is correct but there is a lot more to Qld than the SE corner.I would think that infrastructure is required for the existing population, not just to entice more people to arrive.

The main reason why people move to Qld is because of the climate. e.g yesterday Melbourne had a top temp of 13 deg wheras where I live it was 32.

While the growth in Brisbane over the last 5 years was 2.3 per cent a year, the growth in Cairns was 3.8 per cent.

I agree with you re the wildlife, particularly koalas in the SE corner, but food, water and petrol are not only SE Qld's problems as there is probably more water in Nth Qld than most parts of Australia (leaving out the last week in southern states)

You say Brisbane has become an ugly city and I agree but I find most cities ugly anyway.

Yes Sth Qld might be ok in the winter--as it is here where I am--but I could not stand the climate in the summer months further Nth. I too find most cities ugly. I like the lush coastal places and also not fond of flat dry places.
