Greens lose another Senator over citizenship issue

Deputy Greens leader Larissa Waters has resigned from the Senate after learning she held dual citizenship because she was born in Canada.

Ms Waters is the second Greens senator to resign over a citizenship bungle in less than a week after West Australian representative Scott Ludlam was forced to resign on Friday.

Ms Waters, who is the only Greens representative from Queensland, was born to Australian parents in Canada and returned to Australia while she was still a baby.

The constitution disqualifies potential candidates from election if they hold dual or plural citizenship.

"I was devastated to learn that because of 70-year-old Canadian laws I had been a dual citizen from birth, and that Canadian law changed a week after I was born and required me to have actively renounced Canadian citizenship," Ms Waters said in a statement.

"It is with a heavy heart that I am forced to resign as senator for Queensland and co-deputy leader of the Australian Greens.

"I apologise wholeheartedly to all those who have supported me and helped me to become a representative for the wonderful people of Queensland over the last six years."

Do you think Australia should change its laws regarding dual citizens standing for Parliament?

but at least they can return to the biggest green wilderness that all Greens come from.

its between their ears.

:-))

Some interesting info about ‘the pandora’s box of Section 44 of the Constitution’ from Antony Green

… including Are Pensioners Disqualified from Running for the Australian Parliament.

No the law shouldn't be changed. Committment to Australia and Australia alone absolutely MUST remain a requirement for anyone who wants to represent other Australians.

Blaming a '70 year old Canadian law' is NO EXCUSE. And I hope both ex-Senators have to repay the full amount they have drawn from the taxpayer.

I agree with you whole heartily, on both accounts. Absolutely!!

2 less loonies in parliament

Great outcome for the  people

Ludlam, who was elected in 2007, is estimated to have earned $1.6 million during his time in Parliament.  Larissa Waters, who won a Queensland Senate spot in 2011, is estimated to have earned $1.2 million before stepping down on Tuesday.

Plus all the travel allowances and other benefits

And for what - doing sweet f.a.

Money stolen from the taxpayer

Having had six prime ministers born in the UK and one in Chile we know birth is not a requirement for that office. In my opinion Article 44(i) of the Constitution is completely out dated and really has no place in Australia. It makes no sense to deny people who have international links to run for office; this is not only unreasonable but a tad short sighted seeing we are in a globalised age.

To regard people who are dual citizens as unsuitable to represent this country is belittling. Scott Ludlam was born in New Zealand and Larissa Waters in Canada. Both of these countries are original members of the Commonwealth. Goodness, Commonwealth Freedom of Movement Organisation wants free movement between UK, Canada, NZ and Australia!!

What  about soldiers? They would appear to pose a greater “threat” than politicians, but, as far as I know, if you are from the UK, USA, Canada or NZ the chances of serving in the ADF while holding dual citizenship is very high. The ADF/Commonwealth government will not insist upon you renouncing your citizenship in order to join. I believe in the past the ADF has actually encouraged foreign nationals without Australian citizenship to join the ADF and become dual citizens of Australia. If this has changed, perhaps someone can correct me.

I might add, my ancestors came over to Australia on the convict ships, so no self interest is at play here. Added to that, I don’t care much for Waters or Ludlam or the Greens, but we have to be fair.

Two totally different questions here.

1. Should the law/constitution be changed? Maybe. Let our elected representatives decide and if necessary, change the constitution.

2. Waters and Ludlum should (and little doubt, DID) know better. They knew they were  not entitled to be elected and receive considerable payments. Dumb? Conniving? Fraudsters? Maybe all three.

Australian Senators do NOT represent the Commonwealth nations, they are meant to represent Australians. Personally I don't cere where they were born. That is not the issue. The issue is that people are NOT able to be elected to government IF they hold dual citizenship. That is quite clear. They even signed a form saying they were not holding citizenship of another country. They violated this requirement and it is right and proper that they go.

If they are truely genuine, they can renounce their foreign allegiences and restand for election.

KSS, we all know "Australian Senators do NOT represent the Commonwealth nations, they are meant to represent Australians" Why the digression?

The question here is, should they remain as senators, did they know they should not have run for Parliament having dual nationality? I stand by my take on this, if you have managed to read my posts.

They should go, yes to that. Should they repay their  wages, No. For what reason and what untold crime have they committed that we should demand they repay monies they received for a job (whether we agree or not they did a good job).

I agree with Kiah, some rules have to be changed or more stringent checks made to ensure rules are kept. IMO the entire Green party should be disbanded, quite  clear to me the whole lot of them cheated their way into Parliament. They have proved once again how dishonest the whole lot of them are.

I disagree that the law should be changed.

It is fine the way it is.

I do not want my elected representative pledging allegiance to another country. Their loyalties should be with Australia. Otherwise we could find Vlad Putin leading the Greens and Kim Jong-Un leading the Labor Party.

No  one wants Kim or Vlad leading a sheep, but, there is a something to be said about someone from a Commonwealth country.

Personally, I think they should make it as difficult as possible for someone to get into Parliament, those who make the grade are either "bent" or have the best interests of the country at heart. You can have a golden Aussie passport and still be a crook.

This is what the laugh a minute Greens leader said on twitter: "I am gutted by @larissawaters announcement. Parliament & the nation are worse off as a result of the resignation of two amazing leaders." Amazing????

“I left Canada as a baby, born to Australian parents studying and working briefly in Canada before they returned home,” says Waters. Btw she is a lawyer, please someone tell her, doesn't matter who your parents are, if you were born in Timbuktu, you are  Timbuktian. They should make it illegal for a Green to be in Parliament, they make even Pauline look good!

Wonder what happens re superannuation??  The guy (whose name escapes me) has done 11 years as a Senator.  I well remember the 30 year old Senator Ah Chee I think his name was who had done 9 years and walked away with an indexed pension for life of $50k.

I assume this will not happen and they will just get back their contributions.

KSS - I really don't know why people need dual citizenship. My brother-in-law had one because he was Swedish. He said when he went to his own country he got through customs much quicker than those that didn't. He has now renounced it and got Australian citizenship.

I understand that Di Natali is scrambling around to find out if HE has relinquished his Italian citizenship....unbelievable....

"Greens leader Richard Di Natale is scrambling to produce documents showing he correctly renounced his Italian citizenship before entering parliament after his two co-deputy leaders were forced to resign after failing to conduct proper checks."

Sounds fishy

why not write to the Italian embassy in Canberra and ask them to confirm

What a joke, the mad scramble for senators to see if they did the right thing! Interesting to note that the majority of the offenders are left leaning pollies and their devil may care attitude towards this issue reflects their general approach to the way they conduct themselves in and out of parliament.

Most of them are hell bent on motivating change and who show very little respect for the taxpayer and its dollar. It’s just too funny they are now being caught out by the very system that they seek to change!!

Wonder how Natale is gettingon with the search  to see if he's still in. I have dual nationality, and as someone with both Australian and Italian citizenship, I am very interested to see if Natale did renounce his. Hard for any Italian to do.

The Greens have lost credibility. The young ones who used to see "green" no longer seem to be interested.

I read today, there is a collapse of the Greens in most states and my opinion is they won't be able to continue for much longer. Shame because they had a great message in the beginning but lost their  way.

What was their great message Kiah

Kiah,

How do you know  "the young ones who used to see "green" no longer seem to be interested"? Have you surveyed every young person? Of course you haven't! You are making things up! I can't speak for young people (like you pretend to do) but I do know a hell of a lot of older people who vote Green.

And regarding that article you read: Who wrote it and how does that person know there has been "a collapse of the Greens in most states"? How could anyone know that??? We live in a democracy and will know the standing of the Greens after the next election only.

You might also enlighten us as to how the Greens have "lost their way"? Their policies haven't changed over the years.

World Government , open borders , unaffordable power for pensioners .

Raph

Oh yes - wonderful message Indeed

and the greenies shall inherit the earth

Kiah,

Absolutely correct Kiah, not only are they hypocrites, the young  “greenies” are leaving in droves. Fed up to the back teeth with their shenanigans. Hang on, there's one 22 yr old taking Scott Ludlam’s place in WA, never had a job, straight outa school, hope he hasn’t dual citizenship. Looks like Andrew Bartlett is in for the chop too. Ah, these greenies.

You know what Kiah, these green cucumbers are a blight on our political scene, my prediction a slow miserable death filled with scandal and a tribe of their bent followers who want to “bend” the rules to keep them there. The poor blighters have always  been a ponzi scheme who want to take our glorious future back to the back waters of Marxism and Leninism with their shock policies thrown at the young and naïve. Yep, their plan to delude another batch of their idiot followers. Now they are working on the abolition of sex changes for kids. Whata group of crazies.

PS: always ignore the conda, will explain later.

Can't make out if you agree with KIAH that they had a great message .
