Greens lose another Senator over citizenship issue
Deputy Greens leader Larissa Waters has resigned from the Senate after learning she held dual citizenship because she was born in Canada.
Ms Waters is the second Greens senator to resign over a citizenship bungle in less than a week after West Australian representative Scott Ludlam was forced to resign on Friday.
Ms Waters, who is the only Greens representative from Queensland, was born to Australian parents in Canada and returned to Australia while she was still a baby.
The constitution disqualifies potential candidates from election if they hold dual or plural citizenship.
"I was devastated to learn that because of 70-year-old Canadian laws I had been a dual citizen from birth, and that Canadian law changed a week after I was born and required me to have actively renounced Canadian citizenship," Ms Waters said in a statement.
"It is with a heavy heart that I am forced to resign as senator for Queensland and co-deputy leader of the Australian Greens.
"I apologise wholeheartedly to all those who have supported me and helped me to become a representative for the wonderful people of Queensland over the last six years."
Do you think Australia should change its laws regarding dual citizens standing for Parliament?
but at least they can return to the biggest green wilderness that all Greens come from.
its between their ears.
