Great news about the environment - share your stories

According to “breakthrough” new research, funded by a clutch of consumer goods firms, French scientists have discovered a plastic-eating enzyme they claim could offer an innovative recycling solution for millions of tonnes of toxic plastic waste material.

Chinese recycling facilities like this one at Tongzhou have stopped processing some recyclable materials from Australia.

$150m needed to 'kick-start' circular economy

The Australian Council of Recycling [ACOR] and the Waste Management Association of Australia [WMAA] have called on the Federal and State Governments to implement their $150 million plan to 're-boot' the local recycling industry and spurn the creation of a circular economy.

Under the proposal, the money would be spent developing the manufacturing infrastructure needed to process recyclable waste domestically, rather than exporting it overseas.

Australia exported recyclable waste to around 100 countries

I had seen it on TV awhile ago that there were recyling places in Australia ready to go but they needed funding.

Magpies are omnivorous and walk around at ground level looking for food. They eat a wide variety of insects, as well as invertebrates such as earthworms and snails. This makes them useful for pest control and excellent for the environment.

A natural diet for these birds consists of insects and small animals such as lizards and mice. Food sources commonly offered to magpies include bread, mincemeat, bird seed and pet food, all of which can lead to nutritional imbalances and life threatening complications. Do not feed these guys raw meat, cheese and bread. Raw meat and mince, although popular, does the most damage to magpie health. People who feed adult magpies raw meat wouldn't see the effects it had on their young in the nest, but veterinarians regularly see birds with weak and disfigured bones. Babies where the parents have been supplemented with mince have bones that are soft and break.

Do not feed birds, unless you go to the trouble of speaking with an avian expert on what foods they shoud be eating.

Thanks Ray ... great information.

Great post, thanks Ray, Foxy did you read this? So if we want to feed magpies we need to catch an insect, worm or snail, now I might keep those snails I find in the garden for them.

What about pigeons, lorikeets and wattlebirds?

I have been telling my mum to stop feeding the lorikeets white bread!! She especially is enjoying their visits at the moment but I think she needs to know what to feed them.

Reminds me of my late parents use to buy in the 60s kangaroo meat for the birds that sat on the Hills Hoist, they were Kookaburras!  They came at a regular time too.

Wombaroo Insectivore Rearing Mix is a balanced diet for rearing or supplementing insectivorous and carnivorous birds.  It is mixed with meat.

It can be used on its own with water, made into pellets and used as rearing food for orphan magpies, ravens, kookaburras or frogmouths.

Made into a slurry and using a syringe it can be force-fed sick birds or orphaned altricial chicks.

Himalayas ‘visible from parts of India for first time in 30 years’

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-04-09/himalayas-visible-india-pollution/12136856

How wonderful, if only we could keep it like this.

Clean air!  That reminds me of the times we have flown into Perth Airport and the first thing we notice is the clean air having come from Europe or Asia!

Yes it is about the environment, I should have added "and nature".

GOOD NEWS FOR PANDAS TOO!

Some good news amid the global shutdown - two giant pandas in a Hong Kong zoo have successfully mated, 10 years after their previous attempt.

The pair, Ying Ying and Le Le have lived together for over 13 years but like many of their species, have struggled to ‘get in the mood’.

In fact, in their over decade-long relationship, the pair’s last attempts at mating were in 2010, says Michael Boos, executive director in zoological operations and conservation at Ocean Park.

“The successful natural mating process today is extremely exciting for all of us, as the chance of pregnancy via natural mating is higher than by artificial insemination,” he explains.

Pandas are known for their low-libido – their mating season is just a few days a year – which has led to tragically low population numbers. The Worldwide Fund for Nature estimated in 2014 that there were only 1,864 giant pandas left in the world.

Zoo staff say Ying Ying and Le Le had displayed common signs of courtship before doing the deed – Ying Ying was playing in the water more and Le Le left his scent around the habitat.

Hong Kong’s Ocean Park zoo has been closed to the public since Jan 26, following the coronavirus outbreak. Since then, the animals have enjoyed time away from crowds which might have been the perfect conditions for Ying Ying and Le Le to get some alone time.

It will be a little while before zoo staff will know if the mating was successful – ultrasound scans can only detect cubs at 14 to 17 days before the birth and the full gestation period is from 72 to 324 days.

Yes, I saw that Incognito -- what great news ain't nature grand -- (without the human race)

Hope this is the right Thread to place this?

Krakatoa volcano erupts 'spewing plumes of ash 15km into the air' - as people hear a loud boom 150km away in Jakarta

Krakatoa volcano erupts 'spewing plumes of ash several kilometres into the air'

The Krakatoa volcano (bottom, before the eruption) has reportedly erupted, spewing plumes of ash high into the air. People reported hearing a loud boom 150km away in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta. A webcam image (top) taken from Anak Krakatau Island shows lava flowing from the volcano.

No exactly good news though it is interesting. Just when the air was getting cleaner.

Venice canals run clear, dolphins appear in Italy’s waterways amid coronavirus lockdown

The canals in Venice are clearer than they have been for a long time, due to lockdown measures taken in the face of coronavirus.

Venice is the clearest it has been in 60 years, and dolphins have been spotted down in southern Italy, swimming in clearer water.

Thanks Suze, we did see this on another topic but thanks for putting it here, so amazing about the dolphins makes you think do they know something?

Fantastic article Celia, thanks. I knew that pollution was killing a lot of people and many of the areas that have more deaths are from more polluted areas, especially the industrialized northern Italy, I really hope those who keep pushing fossil fuels will have a wake up call and we keep our air cleaner. Also the amount of other industrial chemicals that are spewed into these areas too, why China has heaps of respiratory illness even before Covid-19..

Bird lovers, some good news, lockdown is not all bad!

Usually, the sandy shores along Peru’s Pacific coast can be found crowded with tourists and locals enjoying an afternoon at the beach this time of year.

But the coronavirus pandemic has presented the world with an unprecedented break in routine.

An absence of human activity in beach areas in Peru’s capital city, Lima, have allowed for thousands of Belcher’s gulls, pelicans and other wild birds to congregate.

The birds have started swarming the built-up city areas over the last two weeks since Peru declared a state of emergency and forced most of its 32 million people indoors under strict lockdown measures.

peru birds

Amazing how birds and animals are now taking back their environment. Was thinking the other day how the seagulls will have to fend for themselves more now they don't have humans to throw them junk food, will be better for their health too.

I thought you would be interested in this story I found on MSN:

http://a.msn.com/01/en-au/BB12l1Bs?ocid=se2

It would not surprise me if we start seeing the creepers and weeds start to take over some areas with no traffic around and people indoors not gardening.

a dog sitting on the side of a road: Stray dogs in Kolkata usually rely on scraps and refuse for food but are going hungry during the coronavirus lockdown.

I saw the monkeys on TV running amok. In that article it also mentioned about the horses normally used for carriage tourist trips are not being fed and are starving to death.

Yes Incognito it is the same article I think.

Did you hear what I wrote this morning about the new item in China that dogs now are only to be companions and not consumed!

Yes I read that, I hope they stick to it and it does not become a black market trade.

How things change!!

LOL yes RnR.

Love it…so funny you should post that cartoon RnR! I awoke this morning to a commotion and for a moment thought I was in a zoo for birds. Ravens, magpies and several other birds in trees along my street, making as much noise as they can.

Just wonderful..yes..I think less humans on the streets is certainly a bonus for the animals during lockdown!

LOVE IT

Planet of the apes!

There were bound to be plenty of unpredictable consequences as a result of the coronavirus outbreak, but a gang war between rival packs of monkeys in the streets of Thailand?

According to the Bangkok Post, that’s exactly what happened in the province of Lopburi this week, as hundreds of monkeys brawled over scraps of food. Apparently, tourists who normally keep them well-fed are staying away due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Talking of changing names, musicveg, people in glass houses should not throw stones!

That is great, I bet that it is expensive, and also there is no mention it is fair trade, a lot of cocoa is bought from many slave labor and child labor farms, yes even Cadbury's.

Lovely story!

Chocolate Bars

Aussie scientists are developing a simple wearable patch able to detect which COVID-19 patients are most likely to develop a severe form of the disease and need a ventilator.

Australian National University researcher Professor Mark Kendall has developed a microwavable sensor which attaches to the patient’s skin and measures fluid in the skin containing markers of disease.

The device would be worn by the patients like a watch. Read rest here....

CORONA VIRUS FREE ZONE!

Sophie please remove your post I specifically requested we keep this topic free from the virus mainly so we can have a break from it, please post on the "Virus from China" topic or other topic, thank you for your understanding.

Are you unwell Incognito? Sorry to say, I do not have the ability to remove posts from the forum since I am not a member of staff. You will have to bide your time and ask the moderator to do so.

While you’re at it perhaps you can explain to them why you think finding a means to limit the use of ventilators is not good for the environment.

Some friendly advice…if you are so fed up with reading about this pandemic which is taking over the world…why not limit your time watching the news; reading about Covid-19 and posting incessantly about it. Instead, my humble suggestion would be.. do some serious reading or studies to while away the time during lockdown.

Happy Easter May The Renewal Of Life At Easter Bring New Blessings ...

Well I was hoping we could stick to the subject "good news about the environment" "please keep this a coronavirus free zone unless it is relevant to good news about the environment" you did not read the title.

Don't know what you are talking about re: ventilators

I do not need your advice re: covid-19 posts or what I choose to read, this has nothing to do with this post.

You seem terribly unwell Incognito. I really do hope you get on even keel eventually.

You will be pleased to know, I shall not be contributing to this thread in the future, hopefully, that will allay some of your anxiety and allow you to get some sleep at nights.

Cheerio. I'll wager $100 that you pop in to make some silly retort!

I am perfectly healthy thank you, so stop attacking me!! I do not suffer any anxiety and I sleep extremely well too.

I never said you cannot contribute, just requested you stick to the subject, thanks, have a great day.

I think you won the bet Sophie, LOL

What bet Lucca?

No one cares if you never post again Sophie!  You are insulting to the max.

Your change of name from RAY to LUCCA still makes you the same "person" - "ugly" never changes!

Incog. - It was suggested nicely awhile back (by more than one person)  that it would be in your best interest not to interact with these Trolls.  Remember?

Names again???  Celia - Sophie (aka. many others) - even "x" lol -  Ray/Lucca - Kiah - Micha - Abe - the list goes on ......................same Trolls (all "mates") - different names!

Your choice to keep "chatting/questioning/engaging" will be to your own detriment!  I have already (along with others) reported at length the appalling comments posted in the "nice and fun" Topics over Easter by this "Basket of Deplorables"!

....  "win the bet"?  Yes!  - read comments more carefully Incog. - they are making a fool out of you unfortunately!

Even in such diverse and sad times - they never let up!  Disgusting!!!

Sorry forgot your warning Foxy, hard to remember who is who when they keep changing names. I tried to keep this topic a "happy place" but it got sabotaged, very annoying, just like your RAK topic.

You wonder what makes them tick, were they betting on making me angry? Well I am not angry.

Funny I don't feel like a fool, they cannot get me, I remain calm at all times despite what I write. I get attacked on other topics too, must start making a list of names who attack my opinions.

Thanks for your support Foxy, have a great day.
