Government finally shows compassion to Biloela family

Federal Immigration Minister Alex Hawke released a statement on Tuesday morning allowing the Sri Lankan family currently held in detention on Christmas Island to reside in the Perth community.

The government has spent $7 million keeping the family, commonly referred to as the Biloela family after the community where they used to reside, in detention on Christmas Island.

The family will now reside in suburban Perth through a community detention placement, close to schools and support services, while the youngest child receives medical treatment from the nearby Perth Children's Hospital and as the family pursues ongoing legal matters.

Mr Hawke said: "In making this determination I am balancing the government's ongoing commitment to strong border protection policies with appropriate compassion in circumstances involving children held in detention.

"I will consider at a future date whether to lift the statutory bar presently preventing members of the family from reapplying for temporary protection, for which they have previously been rejected."

Do you think the family should be given a visa to be able to settle in Australia permanently?

What a shame this couple are not white, 27 yr old au-pairs working for one of Dutto's mates. They would have been approved and processed into the country in 24 hrs - as others have been.

These people are refugees from Tamil oppression - that is not in question. They are hardworking and willing to integrate into a remote community in Australia and become so much  apart of that community that the Govt had to ignore 6,000 signatures and make a desperate, guilty midnight attempt to try to remove them from the country in the dead of night. Something even the judge essayed to be a low-act and placed an injunction on the flight that required it to turn around mid-flight.

When the law is an ass - and the elected officials who administer the law and choose not to behave like a human beings - this makes Australia a lesser place and a demonstrates a deplorable application of taxpayers money.

the expression 'fair go' springs to mind .... but only briefly for Dutto (or he-who-should-not-be-named ...  hahaha)

We could be buying millions of Covid vaccinations if our govt had put this amount of resources and focus into public health - or maybe even just doing their jobs would be nice ........

We now understand why Dutton was invited to leave the police force - given the questions around his sobriety during a police chase that ended in his car crash.

Never backward about coming forward, PeteD then sued for injuries received to the tune of $250k - over and above his other termination payments..... no visible record remains of what the final payment was .....

Curiously enough, had the govt of his day pursued PeteD to the full extent of the law (as PD has pursued these refugees) we may have all the answers regarding his change in career path.

Such a smooth transition from police work to political work rings bells from the LNP Moonlight State Days

So many questions about Dutton. He seems oblivious. Think the Feds are very happy for him to take the flack to protect them from taking it instead.

MiningMagnet -  Thanks for filing us in on the likes of Peter Dutton. I knew he was low but how low can he go after reading about him suing for injuries received for over $250k's.

Disgraceful having these people in detention for three years...a decision should have been made at the beginning one way or another.

I am pleased that they are given a visa to settle permanently. They are loved and accepted by their community, they work, pay taxes. What more is required??
