Government backs down on free shingles shot

Last week we told you time was running out to get your free shingles shot, but the backlash from the program ending has forced the government to act and extend the program for another two years.

Now Australians aged between 71-79 years will continue to be able to receive a free Zostavax singles vaccine until 31 October 2023.

Shingles is a painful rash which can blister, caused by the same virus as chickenpox. It is a serious infection that is particularly debilitating for older people. One in three adults are at risk of developing the virus in their lifetime.

As people get older, they are at greater risk of experiencing more severe and long-lasting pain associated with the shingles infection, so prevention with vaccination is always a better option than treatment.

Health minister Greg Hunt said the extension would continue as many people missed out on the free shot as a result of the pandemic.

“To date, more than 1.2 million Australians aged 70-79 have received a free shingles vaccine as part of this program and we want to provide assurance that the vaccine will continue to be free for another two years," Mr Hunt said.

“The COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown restrictions have meant that many Australians have not been able to access a Zostavax vaccine, and this extension will ensure they need not miss out.”

Have you had your shingles shot? Will you plan on having one of these shots soon?

I am a bit hesitant in having the Shingles Vax. I asked my GP if I had it ,would it affect my Psoriasis and he couldn't answer that. I would hate to have the Vax and my Psoriasis might get out of control.

Ask for a referral to a specialist and get a second opinion.  Last thing you'd want is an attack of shingles from what I hear from others.

My question is why over 70 years. Why can't all Old Age Pensioners receive the Shingles Vaccine at no cost ???. I believe that it is in the best interests for the health and well-being of the ageing community to have access to the Shingles Vaccine. Anyone who suffers from shingles or knows someone who suffers from shingles would agree. It truly is a dreadful and debilitating virus. Jacka.

And the vaccination doesn't prevent another attack. I've had two more doses of shingles since having a the job. Not so severe as the original attack, but annoying, and needing anti viral drugs to control, which made me sick for a week.

We can't win, it seems

I was told by the doctor when I got it, that it would only last 5 years, but I have heard nothing about a booster.  Does anyone know any more??

When I was 70 I contracted Shingles and PHN.  It necessitated us cancelling a planned holiday to Tassie. It took 3 months to get over it.

My Doctor advised to have the vaccine but no earlier than 2 years after having Shingles.  I have now had the vaccine.
