Google issues warning on pulling search from Australia

Google is currently showing users a pop-up explaining why it may have to pull its search function from the Australian market.

Whenever users enter a search, a new message appears linking to a video featuring Google's Australian managing director Mel Silva explaining the federal government's news media bargaining code, which will force Google to pay eligible news publishers to link their content in search.

"The news media bargaining code will break how Google Search works in Australia," Ms Silva says in the video.

"I know that sounds pretty full on, but it's true."

Watch the video below:

YourLifeChoices member John felt compelled to email in his thoughts on the matter, which we have included below.

"Why is this government insisting that organisations such as Google pay to use Australian news sites? On one hand the main beneficiary will be News Corp one the other it may be the ABC. I thought competition would be good for News Corp and the ABC. Government now wants the millions of dollars it has gutted from the ABC to be replaced by Google and at the same time it is giving News Corporation a subsidy to promote small issues."

Do you think Google should pay publishers for their content that is linked in its search function?

More on the reasons behind Australia's push here.

While News Corp Australia has campaigned aggressively for the code, it has the broad support of the industry including Guardian Australia. Nine Entertainment, publishers of the Sydney Morning Herald and the Age, are on board as is Seven West Media, Australian Community Media, regional and small publishers.

Do you think Google should pay publishers for their content that is linked in its search function?

NO ... the ones complaining are all commercial publishers in it for profit ... that's business.

Have you ever heard of tetris game? It's a very hot game right now, Here brings together a lot of games from classic to modern. Let me also experience it

Google is really Mystery!!! Love it and hare it!! I work at https://vibethatspot.com/collections/ which is an online store for USA people.

I have Google News on my mobile phone and it cost me zero except when I want to look at a certain item from some newspaper then I am required to pay a subscription fee to that newspaper before I can read their news article. There are some newspapers that require you to take out a subscription before you can read their news report. It is not Google's responsibility to pay for and supply you with a news search for free. If you want a newspaper you must pay for it, so if you want to Google the news then it's you who should pay for it not Google.

The inventors of the internet held an ideal: information, including news, be freely available without cost to the public. Our government proposes to overturn that ideal. It's bad enough that we now have Pay TV gradually overwhelming free to air and newspapers asking for payment to read their news websites. What other countries are embarking on such an insidious and dictatorial proposal?

The way I understand it, if this law goes through Google & Facebook will be required to pay for providing a link to news articles from every news provider except the ABC. Apparently, the ABC isn't going to be allowed to charge. So Google & Facebook 'could' just say fine we'll only share links to ABC news, problem solved.

Be careful what you wish for Rupert. LOL

Google, like many international companies, likes to take what it can and keep all the profits. World-wide, they use media companies to provide the news. Media companies employ people to gather and publish information, and are accountable to their governments for the veracity of that information. If they publish 'fake news' as Trump has accused, they will face the processes of the law.

Contrast that with what has happened through social media in the US. Conspiracy theories abound, and despite what we know to be true, there are many there who still believe that the election was stolen by the Democrats, Russia, stray cats and little green men from Mars of Uranus. No checks or balances.

Put simply, if you can Google for the news and get all the information that commercial media are putting out there without paying, then commercial media will eventually reach the point where is is not economical to gather, verify and publish (face it, would the average Joe work for no money?) and they will shut down. Then Twitter, Google and all the others will have to rely on whatever their contributors provide - more conspiracy theories and fake news.

You can love or hate Murdoch, Fairfax, Seven News and all the rest, but they are accountable, unlike Google et al. In the mean time, countries around the world are looking on to see where we go. It would serve them well to follow the same path as Australia - so we could see if Google was prepared to try blackmailing everyone else as well.

Like the Government, I won't be bullied. Use Bing.

I agree. I have been trying out the Duck Duck Go search engine and finding it good. I don't think people realise that there are other search engines (or what a search engine is for that matter) and that you can change your default within your browser. I have friends that don't know that they are using a program or a search engine or a browser, it's very easy to confuse them.
