‘Golden girl’ Betty Cuthbert dies aged 79

Four-time Olympic Gold medallist Betty Cuthbert has died aged 79.

Cuthbert set world records in several track and field events and was dubbed the ‘Golden girl’ by Australia’s media after her performance in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, where she dominated the 100-metre and 200-metre events as an 18-year-old. She was also a member of the 4x100m relay team.

A hamstring injury ruined her chances of collecting more medals at the 1960 Olympics, but she won another gold medal in the 400-metre event at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

Cuthbert suffered from multiple sclerosis and was a torchbearer at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, where she was pushed in a wheelchair by fellow Olympic hero Raelene Boyle.

I once spent some time, about 2 weeks on and off --  with Betty Cuthbert, many years ago as she was holidaying with some Friends of ours in the same place we were -- -- it was in Huskinson NSW,  she came over as a very nice person, she was well at the time.

RIP Betty Cuthbert. Loved that smile.

My hero, remember her at the Melbourne olympic games. RIP Betty.

One of my best ever memories is that of watching her win the 200 metres, from the stands at MCG in 1956.

SHE was held in very high esteem by her peers,     a great athlete,   and embassador for her country,     R,I,P,    BETTY CUTHBERT,
