What was that you were saying on your “free speech” thread about “delicate little flowers” not being able to handle a tennis player (Tennys Sandgren) saying gay clubs made his eyes bleed Darcie? Yet you don’t believe Get Up has a right to inform about things like Adani, reef destruction, political corruption etc? Are you a “delicate little flower” like your mates in the LNP Darcie? Shame on them for trying to shut up and destroy a movement like Get Up!!!! Long live free speech!

I’m glad you brought the subject up though because many readers might not know that the Turnbull Government is in the process of compiling a law to get rid of Get Up. Any government that tries to shut up and destroy all opposition is a very bad government - one might even say fascist! Especially when that opposition represents an independent movement to give the people a voice to protest wrongs in the affairs of their country.

Bill Shorten was a big union donor to GetUp! when it was ­established, giving about $100,000, possibly more, to the left-leaning activist group.

The revelation, confirmed for the first time to The Weekend Australian, follows the federal Labor leader’s persistent refusal to make any comment over what support he provided to GetUp! when he was in charge of the Australian Workers Union.

Mr Shorten was a founding board member of GetUp! when it was launched in August 2005 as an “independent, grassroots, community advocacy organisation” to campaign on progressive issues.

During the 2010 election campaign, GetUp! received a record $1.12m donation from the Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union. The funds were earmarked for a national TV ad, authorised by GetUp!, that attacked then opposition leader Tony Abbott over his alleged ­“archaic” views on women.

With no mention of the CFMEU, an ALP affiliate and big Labor donor, the ad that ran during the election campaign was later blasted by critics as evidence that GetUp! was partisan.

Activist group GetUp! has ­accepted more than $300,000 in foreign donations over the past two years while campaigning for a ban on foreign donations to Australian political parties. 
 

Liberal senator Eric Abetz has attacked advocacy group GetUp! for accepting $10,000 from a communist-linked group, saying it was likely Bill Shorten knew of the donation. 

The Australian revealedyesterday thatthe Australia USSR Friendship Association gave GetUp! at least $10,000 in 2006 to help pay for newspaper ads that backed the then fledgling activist group’s “Bring David Hicks Home “ campaign .
