George Pell sentenced six years in prison

George Pell has been sentenced to six years in prison, with no chance for parole for three years and eight months.

Mr Pell was convicted on five counts in December, the most senior Catholic official and first bishop to be found guilty in a criminal court for sexually abusing minors. By law, his sentence could have been up to 50 years.

“I would characterize these breaches and abuses as grave,” said chief judge Peter Kidd.

Speaking directly to Cardinal Pell, he added: “You had time to reflect on your behavior as you offended, yet you refused to desist.”

Do you think the sentence fits the crime?

I am disgusted by this sentencing. I was hoping it would be longer, at least he will be placed on a register of sexual offenders for the rest of his life.

It will be interesting to see how the Pope reacts.

Vatican says they are going to wait until the appeal before taking any action KIAH..I can't believe it.

One word ..................  PATHETIC !!!

Pell should have got 6 years just for moving around Gerald Ridsdale and his other cronies to different parish's so they could continue their abuse undetected!

Tip of the iceberg re Pell IMO - only remorse people like him have is the fact they finally get caught out!

At most he will probably do 3 1/2 yrs. (if what the media are reporting right now is true?) also his lawyers have already lodged an appeal!

No other person would have been afforded the special leniency clauses in a sentence handed down like he just got!

He was stressed - has high blood pressure - was old  etc. etc. ... boo hoo ...appalling!

Friends in high places for character references - Howard and Abbott.   Say no more!

I agree Foxy bloody pathetic -- he should swing for the evil he has done AND a shame it has allowed this bastard to get away with it the majority of his life as well as his pedophile mates

It's high time the Religious Institution were Taxed like any other commercial enterprise.

if it was up to me they would also be charged with Fraud.

With you 100% SFR --- these religious rip-offs are so corrupt and making millions all tax free

You’re absolutely right. At least he’s now behind bars and I know the judge can only adjudicate on the exact  case before him but this low-life has shielded his pedo mates for years. That makes him an accomplice and every bit as guilty as them.

I wonder what little Johnnie Howard and Tony Rabbit’s wives think about them so publicly supporting a rock spider.

Foxy, talking about friends in high places. The Queen was very palsy with Rolf Harris. Even when facing charges he performed at her jubilee concert.

and what has the queen got to do with any of it? Would you be much happier over all if she had performed the "I'm not happy, off with his head" routine?

Apparently there is a bombshell Report about to be released about the Priests working with Pell back when he was younger.

George Pell in 1987, when he was named as an assistant bishop for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne

Very interesting! Maybe going to show he knew about pedophile priests going back a long way? He allowed it to continue?

Great outcome - Justice Peter Kidd - he saw right through him and he's on the child sex offender register for life.  Passport ban applies, no more Rome.

The Silk Miller and Bega schoolgirl murders. International war crimes. Tony Mokbel. These are among the high profile criminal trials new County Court Chief Judge Peter Kidd acted in during his career as a prosecutor.. ....

Good news but his term should have been for life AT least  -- maybe time to bring back the death penalty!

Watched the whole sentencing broadcast, seemed very balanced to me.

Awaiting the Vatican response on this the 6th anniversary of the election of current Pope Saint Francis on 13 March 2013 ... nothing yet ... pathetic!!

No acknowledgement on their Twtter or Facebook feeds either ... tossers.

Happy 6th anniversary Mr Pope, what lovely news for you ... UGH.

Oh well seems that is it then until the appeal.

I did watch today and also heard re his appeal that will show just how the room he is said to have used to commit these acts, was situated and traffic in and out of it etc.

Which beggers the belief that the Jury did in fact have all the evidence needed as how many on it had been in the Abbey etc.

Also because surely he isnt a dumb bunny at all and would have to be to do this in a room where the door opens with all sorts of ppl coming and going!

No,  as I think hate towards Catholics does exist in a certain group here and so this could be a set up.

And why the Judge disallowed this video does make one wonder.

When so many people have only good words for this man that know him well.

Time will tell but if he did this dirty deed - 6 years isnt long enough for my satisfaction. Far too lenient today on ppl who take the innocence of children away.

Mind you we have had the very foundation of Justice banned and that has led to soft sentencing.

Death Penalty needs to be brought back, then some murderers wouldnt be out living on licence amongst us. only when it came to light in the UK did we also find out happening here too. Due to full gaols.

Without this ultimate deterrent life has become far too cheap. And we have a far more violent society than when it was in use. Made ppl think and protected those working for us all who today get abused all too often.

There is no hate towards Catholics, I was raised a Catholic and witnessed the

Hypocrisy.

This is just the tip of the iceburg of the crimes by religious groups.

Or does it go to show the absolute power that these people have over their followers.  Pell may have thought that even if someone had entered the room and seen him, he would be able to talk or bully his way out of it.  Did people know not to disturb him when he was in this area? If we are to have faith in our legal system we have to believe that 12 ordinary people can see and hera the evidence and sift out the truth.

I do not think hate is directed towards the Catholic believers, it was the Catholic Curch that was caught out, but the others may verywell be faced with these same problems.

Most peoplle can and do distinguish between the organisatin values and those of the congregation.

In 2018 an apparently defunct Instagram page highlighted the criminal charges against Cardinal George Pell, as contrasted with a controversial remark he made years earlier.

A graphic showed Pell, described as “the third-highest ranking official in the Vatican and currently charged with multiple counts of child sex abuse,” above a statement attributed to him holding that “Abortion is a worse moral scandal than priests sexually abusing young people”

FACT CHECK:

In this case, the graphic is accurate on all counts. Pell made the infamous statement during a World Youth Day event in July 2002, in reply to an American youth minister’s asking him how Catholics should respond to questions regarding the findings of systematic sexual abuse committed by church officials. When asked to explain his rationale, Pell (who at the time was the Archbishop of Sydney) said, “Because [abortion] is always a destruction of human life.”

So..sexually abusing a child is not destroying a human life? His sentence was too lenient..

Hypocrites the lot of them --

I was also disgusted with Katherine Greiner last night on the Drum when she was   "ünsure"    that Pell was guilty!?

I too was apalled at K Greiner's comments. Pell was found guilty.    Whether we agree with the sentence or not the process was justice done and the judge's summation and sentencing remarks measured and lawful.

I agree with Plan B about Katherine Greiner couldn't believe what I was hearing I am also catholic yes the church is very hypocritical

Luoise and Katherine. The evidence   speaks for itself.. Victims do not willingly come out the way they have and confess to the world what has has  happened to them. Would  not be easy, Sandygirl do cardinals have to confess their sins to another priest ?  If my comment  gets posted twice  I apologize as there seems to be  an issue with the hit  button

Given that the were other matters that did not reach trial because either they were inadmissable or weak on evidence and given the generous consideration of Pell's age, health to discount the sentence, no the sentence was not long enough. Pell was facing a maximum sentence of 50 years in jail for abusing two boys in 1996 and 1997.That's what he should have got.

The crimes that  George Pell committed were horrrrendous. I think that under the circumstances that  the sentence was fair. George  Pell could die in prison. The judge could only give  a sentence according to   government laws. Pell showed no remorse whatso ever I just hope and pray that other priests will be brought to justice, My empathy for the family of the man whose son died died  of a drug over dose Let us hope that the appeal will be rejected. Victims need peace The church must come forward and  offer recobcialtion with the victims.

Surely this should wait until the right to appeal is adjudicated?

I agree with you old man
