Further flight pain ahead

Buckle up everyone, it seems air travel is about to come a whole lot harder, if that’s even possible.

Ground crew employees who work for aviation company Dnata have applied to the Fair Work Commission to hold a vote on strike action in protest over the company’s efforts to enforce a workplace agreement that would effectively cut workers’ pay and below award conditions.

No one will be surprised Dnata works for Qantas which outsourced it’s ground and baggage crews early in the pandemic and has lost several court cases over that decision.

The Transport Workers Union claim short-staffing and outsourcing has resulted in several safety issues.

Dnata’s solution was suggesting bringing in workers from the Phillipines to fill rosters.

Who’s right? Not sure, but we can be sure the travelling public will pay in the end.

And the Qantas MD earns what, $15 million a year plus bonuses for overseeing this fiasco? His bonuses no doubt largely result from cutting workers wages and outsourcing while collecting $ billions from the government. When was the last time we heard a CEO pay rise couldn't be afforded without improved productivity. Bringing in cheap labour from the Phillipes is not the answer to poor management.
