Free Stakes for Garden Plants

i have just been trimming our large hybiscus shrub - its over 3 metres tall.

realised that while clipping some of the many shoots coming out of the base, the thicker, longer ones would make wonderful stakes for helping plants to stand tall.  they are also very straight.

cut off any side shoots from the main stems, clip to the length you want, and let them stand in an empty pot until they are thoroughly dried out.

nearby, in a laneway, there is a flourishing stand of bamboo - running type unfortunately.  cutting some of these will give you very long and strong stakes.  but whatever you do, don't let them root in the ground.  best dried out on pavers/concrete, lying horizontal.  they will dry in the same shape you lay them out.

all free!

Good idea.

As a side comment, hybiscus are beautiful showy plants and those tall pink specimens are tough.

..Thanks Kika,Thats a great idea....Wobbly

One of the hibiscus in my yard.

The local council planted trees on the nature strip down the side of our home,

The stakes were sharpened hardwood 50cm square, driven well into the

ground, However that never stopped anyone breaking them off and pulling

the young trees out. So they used star iron stakes and put in Greviliers,

Which are now about 2 metres high and in full bloom, "Red"
