Founding Fleetwood Mac member dies aged 73

One of the founding members of Fleetwood Mac, Peter Green, has died aged 73.

Green, born Peter Allen Greenbaum, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 and his songs such as ‘Albatross’, ‘Black Magic Woman’, ‘Oh Well’ and ‘Man of the World’ were iconic to a generation of music lovers.

Rolling Stone ranked Green at number 58 in its list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time and in 1996 he was voted the third-best guitarist of all time in Mojo magazine.

Green battled mental illness for much of his career. While touring Europe in 1970 Green took LSD at a party in Munich, an incident cited by Fleetwood Mac manager Clifford Davis as the crucial point in his mental decline and he left the band a few months later.

Green was eventually diagnosed with schizophrenia and spent time in psychiatric hospital undergoing electroconvulsive therapy during the mid 1970s.

He eventually re-emerged in 1979 and produced a string of solo albums and also made an uncredited appearance on Fleetwood Mac’s double album Tusk, on the song ‘Brown Eyes’.

Albatross was ny favourite song... I was fortunate enough to see them in a small speakeasy club in London back in 1969..

Albatross was also my favourite song and Fleetwood Mac were the first group I saw perform live. They were in a marquee but Albatross when played sounded exactly like the record, incredible, I will never forget it.
