Former Prime Minister eviscerates Morrison over trustworthiness

Former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull didn't hold back when he was asked about Scott Morrison's behaviour when it came to dealing with the French over the nuclear submarines deal.

Watch what he had to say about Morrison's trustworthiness in the video from the Glasgow summit below and you will see the former PM in fine form.

"It’s quite clear that Emmanuel Macron is justified in complaining about Morrison’s conduct – Scott Morrison elaborately deceived the French ... It is just shameful and Morrison should apologise," Turnbull said.

"This is shocking, shocking conduct. Scott Morrison can bluster as much as he likes, but he’s not fooling anyone … I’ll tell you what Scott Morrison has done. He has sacrificed Australian honour, Australian security and Australian sovereignty. Now, that is a shocking thing for an Australian prime minister to do.

"Scott has always had a reputation for telling lies … When a prime minister behaves disingenuously or dissembles or is dishonest, it will reflect on his or her credibility, it will reflect on the credibility of their party and the government. But when you do that, as the leader of the nation, internationally, it reflects on us all. Now look, deceiving people is is bad wherever you do it, but when you do it at an international level, it has much greater ramifications."

Do you think Morrison's trustworthiness is trashing Australia's reputation? Are you worried that Australia may not recover from Morrison's lies?

Malcolm Turnbull has continued in his RAGING BULL stance in crucifying Scott Morrison.  He's  still battered  and bruised because he thought Scomo had his back,  but clearly Scomo  didn't. So now it's a stab Scomo  in the back at all costs to bring him down,  retribution at all costs.  So obvious it's Malcolm is like the proverbial hyena with the meat between it's teeth.....won't let it go.  Scomo has made MANY mistakes by being up front and honest and saying it like it is, and on a few occasions certainly lacks diplomacy, naturally expected of any prime minister.

I wouldn't expect anything less from that turd.

I think Malcolm Turnbull is a very bitter and twisted old man who should settle down and his words were very defamatory.

Macron waited till this particular to have his rant at Morrison when all the world leaders were there.

Yes, Turnball stirring the pot good and proper. It actually borders on treason or traitor, really....phoning the French president to discuss the embarrassment on his part 1st is disgdisgusting selling your country down the tubes,  2ndly why would you embarrass your ex Liberal colleagues by engaging in such an action and 3rdly he really is showing  his true colours ......disgusting behaviour to stir the pot and dig up reasons to make Australia a laughing stock. I've never been more disappointed in a prime minister than I am now of MTurnball. He is a turncoat of note.  Good on Scomo for proving he did tell France albeit in an sms BEFORE it was announced in the news. The French did exactly  the same thing to South Africa prior to Nelson Mandela being throned. The consequences brought the country almost to it's knees ....so as to speak.  The French are NOT without cardinal sin,  but they know how to scream WOE IS ME.

Well Ben, the last line:"Do you think Morrison's trustworthiness is trashing Australia's reputation? Are you worried that Australia may not recover from Morrison's lies? " is akin to the age old question "Have you stopped beating your wife?" There is an assumption that the PM has lied when the accusations are from a French leader heading for an election with numbers well down, a bitter and twisted miserable ghost who still thinks he should be PM, the leader of the opposition and a woman who led the state Labor party to its worst ever defeat.

Perhaps Turnbull should have stuck with his first choice of a political party when he asked Neville Wran about joining Labor. Thanks to Graham Richardson who told Turnbull that he would need to start by handing out leaflets at polling booths, Turnbull switched allegiances and joined the Liberals. He has since spoken out against the Liberals, supported an Independent in the by-election for the seat of Wentworth after he resigned in a fit of pique and has tried, unsuccessfully, to get people to listen to his version of why he was sacked twice as leader. The question should be why the Liberals haven't expelled him from the party.

Mmmm I did my bit of handing out leaflets at polling booths nearly half a century ago and I'm still not Prime Minister. Maybe I'm too honest for any political career.

The contract was dead in the water when France couldn't deliver for 17 years and there was a blow-out in the cost. There were escape clauses in the contract which Scott Morrison thankfully used. Australia will be compensating France for the money they have spent so far so the fact that they couldn't uphold the terms of the contract is the reason for it being terminated plus the fact that the submarines would be obsolete by then. Macron is petulant and as he was quoted as saying in yesterday's West Australian newspaper, "I like to win." Bad luck. A contract has a two-sided obligation.

Turnbull is a vindictive crawler, desperate for some attention.

The only thing I think Morrison mishandled is his "arm around the shoulders/ she'll be right, mate" approach with Macron. It doesn't really wash in Europe. It was a serious matter, it needed to be treated seriously, firmly and formally.

Exactly,   spot on!

Looking in from "outside the box", we've been overseas for nearly 2 years since the borders were closed and it's clear from widespread expat fb forums that Scumbag's latest "smirk and mirrors" stunt has left Australia's rapidly dwindling international credibility as little more than a not very funny joke. Scumbag's creepy PR spin goes hard on "firm" but could never recognise "serious" or "formal" in a blue fit.

"She'll be right, mate," smirk smirk...

Totally agree Anna

They should cancel all the perks of politicians once their service is ended instead of letting them carry on like some sort of Royalty.

No doubt LinMart your comments are based on opinions from a selfish cohort who chose to live outside Australia then complained for the last 18 months that they couldn't get back. Who did they blame? Certainly not themselves for the choices they made, but the PM who gave them fair warning before closing borders.

Nobody will disagree there were musings around the contract costs and performance but these were inconsistent with the official correspondence.

There can be no doubt deception occurred, the AUKUS deal had not been sealed, however there is also no doubt that Australia was able to legally exit the agreement. If Australia had been more honest/circumspect in its communications then the diplomatic fail might have been avoided.

When Morrison met with Macron in June he was expected to  raise the government’s dissatisfaction with the troubled $90 billion deal with French company Naval Group for a fleet of new submarines. Defence had earlier confirmed it was looking at alternatives if the agreement does not go ahead so no doubt Macron was aware the project was on thin ice, but nobody said their was a sweetheart deal in place rather than an open tender for a future nuclear based strategy.

Foreign Minister Marise Payne told the Senate she reiterated the importance of the Attack-class program to French counterparts at a meeting 17 days before the announcement that Australia would build nuclear submarines with US and UK support. Refer the communique from the meeting "21 - Both sides committed to deepen defence industry cooperation and enhance their capability edge in the region. Ministers underlined the importance of the Future Submarine program."

Last week Secretary of Defense Greg Moriarty told a parliamentary committee “There was no cost blowout”. The contract was terminated “because our requirements have changed, not because of the poor performance of either Naval Group or Lockheed Martin Australia”.

And then the day before the announcement Australians wrote to France to say that they were satisfied with the submarine's achievable performance and with the progress of the program. Morrison himself said it was nothing to do with costs or performance but rather a change in strategy  when he canceled the contract in September. When the Prime Minister was specifically asked if his decision had anything to do with cost blow-outs and delays with the French submarines, the Prime Minister said he was “aware of that criticism, but I do not think it is at all based on what are facts “. In fact, Morrison was convinced that his decision “in no way, shape or form reflects the attack class of the attack class, the naval group and the French government and indeed President Macron in this project.”

Talking about politicians and their perks, this is about a retired Prime Minister, if we compare ours to other countries I guess they think they are hard done by!

So what happens if in three years time and before we know who is going to build these atomic subs, when, where and at what cost, American firsts Trump is back in the White House and again tears up all the international agreements made under his predecessor? In other words if Trump treats Scummo like he treated Macron?

Where do we go then for our atomic subs, back to France because the Brits can't sell them without US approval?

In the meantime how do we protect ourselves against China the other enemy Scummo has created for Australia in the past two years?

To severely damage the relationship with our two largest trading partners, China and the EU must be a record for any PM. If Scummo was running one of the businesses his party claims to protect, he'd be out and so he should be.

Viking, good questions and the answers are, nobody knows, see article below.

Hi Viking

Your comments are perfect, I can only add !

We decided to cancel the French submarine contract for :

  An 18 month scoping phase

The possibility of having nuclear powered submarines starting to be built sometime after the scoping      phase

We're told this will cost more than the French contract

HOW GOOD IS SCOTT MORRISON ?

Actually Scott Morrison did lie about Turnbull. When the challenge to Turnbull's leadership kicked off Morrison declared on TV he supported Turnbull. When the dust settled it then came out that Morrison was building his numbers for the challenge when he made that statement and he won the vote becoming P.M..

That is devious and self serving in the extreme and really cast a shadow on any pretence at being honest and trustworthy. I guess the question could be asked again " would you buy a used car from Mr Morrison?"

This whole business with the French and the submarine has been poorly handled from the outset and this recent episode shows the LNP, who placed the order, as very poor money managers despite their claims to the contrary.

Agreed, just look up 'nasty saga you nearly missed' on Google, how Morrison "won" the seat of Cook after the local party voted 10 to one against him. This shows the true measure of the man.

The hyper hysterical Mr. Macaroon is playing to the peanut gallery. And his grudge against Australia is equally matched by his grudge against the UK over fishing rights which, under Brexit, France is currently violating. I suppose the chip on each shoulder makes him well-balanced!

Remember all 'politics is local' and Mr Macaroon is fighting for his life at the French polls and failing miserably. This macho muscle-flexing is not hitting the mark either in France or Australia. Oh that's right, except for the "miserable ghost" Mr. Turncoat whose appalling submarine deal has been scuttled, and the media who are hell-bent on bringing down Mr. Morrison personally.

KSS. Nobody is violating any fishing agreement except according to the EU the UK may be just like it is with  the Northern Ireland Accord which Johnson crowed about when he signed it.  The UK EU fishing agreement is in dispute but the disagreement is about a number of French fishing boats which  have been refused permits under the agreement..

Macron is slightly ahead in the polls and they usually go to a second round when any slim lead is generally extended.

KSS, Hyper-hysterical Macron maybe, perhaps but I suggest you all read the following detailed article before you jump to judgement which is based on British and American defence experts opinions and facts. Macron said "I believe Australians will never see these nuclear powered submarines."   If you can get access to this article you will probably come to the same conclusion. One thing is for certain, no YLC subscriber will ever live long enough to see them.

The reason we have not been told who will build these submarines, where, when and at what cost and when delivery will be made is because nobody knows the answers to any of these basic facts. And if these answers are unknown so is the answer to the question 'will they ever be made and delivered?'  So now the question; do you think Morrison is lying to the Australian people about these nuclear submarine? Personally. I dont think I kn..?

As I understand it, the French could have delivered nuclear submarines.

I have always voted Liberal, but never again with Morrison at the helm.

He is deceitful at all levels.  Politicians do lie, but Morrison sets a new bench mark.

the French were modifying their well regarded "Barracuda" class nuclear sub to fit Australia's diesel-electric requirements. Indeed, Sweden and Japan could also have sold us nuclear subs; none of these require weapons grade uranium to operate unlike the subs in the UK and USA proposal. And remember, there is not even a design for a sub under AUKUS, just an agreement to provide a propulsion system using weapons grade uranium and discuss scope for a design.

I agree that Turnbull is trying to get his own back on Morrison BUT it is so true about Morrison being a liar because he IS, I have heard so many lies come from him and have also read the book called  ACCIDENTAL PRIME MINSTER that also shows Morrison up as a liar and a marketing man -- the way he had his arm around Turnbull and calling him "his leader" what a Judas kiss that was!

I have always liked Malcolm Turnbull, but I think he chose the wrong time and place to admonish the Prime Minister.

I am disappointed!
