Five more practical uses for baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)

baking soda

The humble baking soda is cheap and, over the years, can save you a decent amount of money, especially when you use it instead of specific-use products, such as shampoo and cleaners. Here are five more practical uses of baking soda.

1. Deodorise sponges
Instead of throwing away you smelly sponges, give them a good wash in hot water then soak the sponges in four tablespoons of baking soda dissolved in four cups of wram water. Then allow to fully dry before using.

2. Use as shampoo
Make a ‘shampoo’ with 1–2 tablespoons of baking soda mixed into one cup of water. After washing your hair with this solution, rinse out your hair with a solution of   1–2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar mixed into one cup of water.

3. Remove oil and grease stains
Sprinkle baking soda on top of the oily stains and then scrub with a wet brush before chucking into the wash.

4. In the veggie patch
Apparently you can sweeten your tomatoes by sprinkling baking soda on the soil around your tomato plants.

5. Wash dirty pots and pans
You can easily remove burnt food stuck to a pan by sioaking the pan in baking soda and water before washing. You can also remove stains form food containers by soaking them overnight in the baking soda and water mixture.

I usually use baking soda in the washing machine to help deodorise and clean clothes, as well as mixed in water with a little vinegar to mop floors. Do you have any other nifty ways to this multi-purpose item?

When I use the dish washer, I always add a teaspoon of baking soda to the water to help remove baked on food. In the final rinse I add vinegar to make the dishes sparkle,I don't use Rinse-Aid. A small pinch of baking soda added to 1/2 glass of warm water will help aid indigestion.

Yes amazing stuff how it lifts burnt on stuff from baking trays etc can be used with vinegar too

An open container/jar of bi-carb in cupboards prevents mold, and keeps shoes fresh especially if in a damp area.

BEST JEWELLERY CLEANER ever and so cheap.1 tablespoon salt1 tablespoon baking soda1 tablespoon dish detergent1 cup water1 piece aluminum foil Directions:1. Heat water in the microwave for 1 or 2 minutes.2. Cut a piece of aluminum foil that roughly covers the bottom of a small bowl (like a cereal bowl).3. Pour hot water into bowl. Place salt, soda, and dishwashing liquid into bowl. Place jewelry on top of foil and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes. Rinse jewelry in cool water and dry jewelry completely with soft cloth. Discard solution after use and make a new batch next time.

i use a 1/4 tea spoon of bicarb in my tea in the morning to suppress uric acid in the blood that causes gout.

I have found that adding white vinegar, not water, to baking soda to a pot that requires cleaning is much more effective.  Sometimes if the pot is very dirty the solution can be left overnight for an easy clean-up the following day.  Works everytime.

Archy:- what do you taste when drinking the tea? bi-carb?

We love our tea so to afraid to er 'muck with it' lol.

Anything works for folks is a good thing.

I wet my electric toothbrush and dip it in bicarbonate soda to brush my teeth. Much whiter and noticing no plaque build up. Before bed it helps to neutralise if prone to reflex or heart burn or hiatus hernia problems.
