Fish tale ends badly as woman loses toes

A Perth woman had to have all the toes from her right foot amputated after contracting an infection during a ‘fish pedicure’ in Thailand.

Victoria Curthoys had originally been successfully treated for a bone infection she acquired 12 years ago after walking on broken glass.

Then during a Thai holiday in 2010, she decided to try a foot spa treatment with live fish.

It involved immersing her feet in a tank containing hundreds of Garra rufa, a small species of cyprinid fish, which are drawn to dead skin that they feed on. Afterwards, the feet are left feeling silky smooth.

However, the tank Ms Curthoys used was contaminated with a water-borne disease that infected her old surgery wounds.

After becoming ill on her return, it took doctors a year to diagnose her condition. She had contracted osteomyelitis which reinfected the bones of her foot. This time, her toes could not be saved.

Seen dozens of idiots try that so called "treatment" and always found it disgusting

I would not be trying anything in those Asian places -- their sanitation leaves a lot to be desired --  that also goes for these nail salons -- here -- I see so many in them they are never empty -- and I have known a few that have had infections from pedicures

Very true - we need to be so careful these days. Even the hairdressers need to be watched.

I was reading a bit re antibiotics the other day and it said also not to use these cheaper drugs as they dont work as well. Asked my GP and he said true. Reckoned have the trouble today in super bugs is because of these third world knock offs. Said too weak.

Scary eh! I wont take the cheaper ones ever again!

What about this newer bug where they say the elderly with prosthetics are more at risk.

BTW he also told me not to go buying these Ibuprophen now cant get Panadeine Extra at the chemist - ask him for a script he said as these others are more dangerous than Codeine as based on asprin derivative and causes inflammation to increase.

So I did get a script and keeping them for if and when needed.

Shades of Bex. It disappeared once we had to go to the pharmacy remember? Because a few over did it.

Apparently, the same codeine that used to be in the over the counter tablets -- is no longer made -- even if you get a script from your Dr --  I never took it myself but a  friend said that when she got it the chemist said it was a different drug =-- than the old Codeine?

Maybe they used piranhas!!

Note to self: Never let fish feast on my feet!
