Fatal Police chases

We seem to be offered the alternatives of either accepting that the public may be at risk of injury or death through high speed police chases or just letting the crims get away. This is what I am seeing in TV commentary etc.
With all the technology and communication hardware available, I just dont see the choices being so limited. For instance, I dont see why the police cant just broadcast a general alert to all other police cars in the area (maybe even include taxi's, ambulances, fire brigades etc) to monitor the speeding offender and track their location. Police have video equipment etc (in most cars, I believe) they should be able to gather evidence and record who was driving etc. Isnt this a prime example of when a police helicopter might be used? Even if this is not practical, the car must stop sometime and with a broadcast alert, the offender would eventually be caught. In any event, its hard to justify high speed police pursuits in high density populated areas as recent tragedies adequately demonstrate.

Very well said Hugo ......and I wonder also what would the Police do to stop the offenders asuming that they do eventualy catch up to them............a futile exercise it seems to me ................

It is a criminal act to steal a car and then drive recklessly and dangerously. This criminal was also a major cause of this fatal road tragedy. I become very upset when the police have to take all the negative comments. They are dammed all the time they try to protect society.

It is about time the blame was also aimed at the person who caused the chase to happen.

I am sure that the blame does rest with the criminal and we all know that they should be brought to justice ........However .......I question the credability of the chase ...........and as Hugo says there should be a better way rather that put inocent motorists at risk ............and or death even ........the police have our absolute trust and we wish them well and we will always suport their efforts ..........they sometimes die too ..............

Blame the Police, don't blame the criminal. STUPID STUPID. I am an Ambulance Officer [volunteer] and I attend a lot of accidents. Anyone who blames the Police is an incredibly stupid fool.

I am sick to death of these Civil libertarians trying to defend these idiots/creeps/scum--what ever you wish to call them, that steal cars drive without a licence--drive dangerously etc etc they should be thrown in jail for a VERY long time--NO 2nd chances. It mad me mad to see the family of these creeps blaming the Police. This bloke had done it b4--why was he still able to do it again--because he could--because he was NOT locked up the 1st time
