Fans divided over new female Doctor Who

The BBC has broken with tradition and announced the new Doctor Who will be a woman in the next series.

In an ad after the broadcast of the Wimbledon final, the BBC revealed that Jodie Whittaker will be the 13th time lord.

Whittaker, known to some for her role in the TV series Broadchurch, is the first woman to assume one of television’s best-known roles since the Doctor first appeared in 1963.

The reaction has been mixed, with plenty of fans excited by the prospect, but many upset at the break with tradition.

For all the controversy about the selection, Sydney Newman, the creator of the series first suggested the Doctor should be metamorphosed into a woman back in 1986.

Was the BBC right to break with tradition and cast a female Doctor Who? Who is your favourite Doctor?

I don't like it. I have nothing against the actress just Doctor shouldn't be female

My favourite was Tom Baker.

Excellent choice. John Pertwee remains my all time favourite, by a nose from David Tennant and short half head from Matt Smith.

I like Jodie Whittaker. But, I do not want a female doctor. mysoginistic? Maybe. BUT, is this just pandering to PC? Not a good idea. I cannot get away from the idea that the doctor, for all the different regenerations, is essentially a character who is male. Nobody would expect to be presented with a King Cleopatrus, or a Winnie Churchill, or an Allan of Troy. These are characters, real or otherwise, who are defined by, and realised through, their gender. However, I will still watch the program to then decide. Writers and directors are not fools. Anticipation grows. Now, what about a companion? Iam, of course, available!

I aagree with everything you have said Perhaps I should have mentioned I am female!

Agree with the above two comments, the good Doctor should remain male. I don't watch the show much these days and my favourite used to be Jon Pertwee, thought he was funny in the part. At least Jodie can't be any worse than Peter Davison, at least she's easy on the eye.

While they're getting so PC why not change Wonder Woman into Wonder Man? Not.

Haven't watched Dr Who in a long while Reagan, think I will now! Tell you what though if Diana Riggs from the Avengers was still swimming, she would have been made for the part. Surprised they didn't have Benedict Cumberbatch at some point. As my wife says, he's ugly in a handsome sort of way!

haha, "ugly in a handsome sort of way" now that's funny. Will BC be flattered I wonder?

The Doctors – portrayals in chronological order. L to R from top row: William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi.

My favourites to date are Tom Baker and David Tennant.

Worth a try.

If it does not work and ratings fall she will be soon gone.

Nothings forever.

It's okay by me, but I am wondering whether Jodie is eccentric enough?   Let's wait and see. I confess that I am quite interested and will certainly watch it at least long enough to make up my own mind. Also, the storylines will quite possibly change too, as there will be a change of writer.

Yes,yes I love them all, but Matt smith is my favourite. I've only watched since Christopher eccleston, but will watch the earlier ones at sometime.

I don't have a problem with a female doctor, looking forward to it coming out.

I couldn't care less. There's more important things to worry about, like: What are the Kadashian girls up to this week? Or how good does Nicole Kidman look in a red swimsuit at age 50? Or ...............

Where can I find a pic of Nicole in that red bikini?

Maybe we'll see Ms Who in a one

Here you go Raphael but swinsuit not bikini: enjoy!

Makes a refreshing change

This is a suprising, though not an unexpected twist to the Doctor Who Scheme of things. Why?  Well for starters, the "new Master " is now a " Missy " so why the blazes not a female Doctor for a distinct change. I keenly look forward to how Jodie Whittaker will develop the Character further.

I don't see or feel any reason in an age of gender equality why there shouldn't be.  I'm only quite saddened/disappointed that Pater Capaldi, after all the hype & fanfare when his inauguration to the role was announced wasn't given a decent run, similar to irrepressible Tom Baker's or David Tenant's tenure.  To me it seemed that Peter C was begining to seriously hit his straps in the role, then he suddenly exits stage left for whatever unknown reason. Whether he was pushed, dumped or early contract termination due to falling ratings is of course debatable.

One thing I really dislike however, is the enormous length of time it takes for any new series to reach Australia for broadcasting.  That is outrageously shoddy on the BBC's CV.

But I've loved this iconic series from a very young age, so I will remain a faithful watcher regardless.

Cheers to Doctor Who fans.

I don't know why anybody would give a bugger what sex they are. Whoever they are they will have their job cut out cutting the mustard William Hartnel and Tom Baker did.

Have not seen this one and probably won't get around to it either, haven't seen an episode for years.

I can not really give an opinion as I have never ever watch th sjow at all,  don't even know what it is about.

Just looked it up plan B

Doctor Who is a British science-fiction television programme produced by the BBC since 1963. The programme depicts the adventures of a Time Lord called "the Doctor", an extraterrestrial being from the planet Gallifrey. The Doctor explores the universe in a time-travelling space ship called the TARDIS. Which is a phone box ..

So you see the gender is very important...

Thanks Brocky,  I think  I have spotted it on flicking thrugh but never watched it

Me neither

I can still remember the first time I saw Doctor Who.  I was channel hopping and landed on an episode with Jon Pertwee after it had started.  He was driving his car that eventually left the road and flew.  My late husband and I watched it from then on for many, many years.

I don't remember when I started to watch only sometimes, but I do remember why I did and why I eventually stopped completely -- the special effects started to outweigh the story and eventually took over.  I haven't watched it for years.

Doctor Who is not the only program where this has happened, I feel.  Some of the decades-old movies and/or programs one can see on TV these days have better plots or storylines than current ones.
