Explaining Kmart’s new blue stickers – and a reminder about the yellow ones

Any savings tip is a good tip – any time, but especially in the current climate.

If you’re a Kmart regular, you’d know that yellow tags on items indicate  they're on sale. But also look out for yellow stickers that say 'soiled/damaged/faulty merchandise.' The ‘problem’ usually won’t be an issue for handy types.

But back to the blue price tags. Is it good news?

Sadly, no. Kmart says the stickers indicate the prices of those items are being increased.

Customers posting on social media haven’t been impressed. A bra with a $9 price tag on the label had a blue sticker on it stating that the price was now $10, according to photos shared by one customer. Another shopper wrote: “I had this the other day with a necklace at Kmart. It was originally $4, and they had put it up to $7!”

A former Kmart employee confirmed on Facebook that the blue stickers indicated a price hike.

“Just a hint from a former Kmart worker – if there’s a blue sticker on it and no original price it’s usually a mark-up,” she said. “Orange or yellow stickers are the mark downs and will go over the original price.”

A Kmart spokesperson says the company aims to make everyday living accessible to everyone and that are re-evaluated regularly to ensure they are in line with the associated costs of running a business.

Have you noticed the blue stickers at Kmart? Do you think the practice is odd or upfront?
