Elon Musk buys Twitter

The world's richest person, Elon Mask, has finalised a deal with Twitter to buy the platform for $US44 Billion ($61.4 billion).

Musk has used Twitter to great effect in recent years and made the offer to purchase the platform because he believed it was not living up to its full potential for 'free speech'.

"Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated," Mr Musk said in a statement following the purchase.

"I also want to make Twitter better than ever by enhancing the product with new features, making the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating the spam bots, and authenticating all humans."

Do you currently use twitter? Will this purchase make you move away from the platform?

I greatly admire Elon Musk. Although I have no use for twitter, it's good to see him taking such an interest. I understand it is his favourite social media platform.

I don't post on Twitter personally but find it very handy to get instant updates from many official Australian organisations.

Never used Twitter and never will. Along with the other social media platforms.

I've had a twitter account for years and used to use it quite a lot. I stopped using it much when it became obvious it was being used as a political tool and to censor people's right to free speech. I shall be happy to use it a lot more now that we have a reasonable human back at the helm! Hopefully we'll see much needed changes pretty quickly. I like Elon's concept of free speech - speech which is not against the current laws. Obviously speech which incites illegal acts should never be allowed, but just disagreeing with a point of view is not a valid reason for disallowing the viewpoint.

It's a shame Elon Musk couldn't have spent his billions helping the less fortunate.
