Eggs

When you buy eggs, what do you look for ?
Does size matter or where the eggs come from or how the birds are kept ?

RSPCA suggests Shop Humane.
Hens on RSPCA Approved farms aren't kept in battery cages and they have the freedom to express all their natural behaviours. Importantly, they get to lay their eggs in a nest.

The RSPCA approves Modra Free Range eggs; Coles Barn Laid Eggs; Sunny Queen Barn Laid eggs; Ruradene Free Range eggs; Southern Egg Barn Laid eggs; MMM Farm Barn Laid eggs, Compass Barn Laid eggs, Golden Eggs Barn Laid eggs and Valley Brook Barn Laid eggs.

Maybe it is time to think of the welfare of the hens next time you shop.

We never buy cage eggs Fwed and haven't for years, ever since I saw how the poor birds are kept I always buy free range even though they are dearer.. I will, if I have to,use barn eggs, but I will go without rather than use cage eggs

I agree wholeheartedly, but I wonder why the RSPCA dont take

more interest in Halal meat production.

Yes fwed the welfare of the hen is a deciding factor. In fact there is no doubt that the free range eggs taste more delicious and are my first choice. However the fresher the betterm so for me the use by date is important too! Eggs are excellent for our good health.

Hello everyone - until a year ago I used to have my own chooks - could even sell a few eggs. Now I buy them from my former neighbour - all totally free range - fresh and lovely golden yolks. Of course, living in the country helps.

When I pay more for free range I do so in the hope of

helping the cause to completely BAN Caged chooks BUT I do hope

the eggs are true as stated and not some people making more from

customers who trust.

Caged birds kept with the lights on all night to make them lay more and

debeaked are such a sad sight and the people who keep them

an abomination.

Was lovely today shopping as nice Winter sun but ahh Melbourne

is fantastic (rather Latrobe Valley) bit further out than Melbourne Central.

Phyl.

I always buy the free range eggs and really care about the welfare of the birds--I buy the large eggs because they are better for cooking cakes--when able I buy from the farm.

Free range eggs in this household, NEVER CAGE EGGS ! 'Mountain Range' from Aldi....700g, $4.90 per dozen.

One has to be quick and early, otherwise............empty box. Lots of cage eggs left, ( sensible people ). My father kept chooks for years He would never touch cage eggs, for all the good reasons which have been posted.

He was always adamant though that white eggs and brown eggs were only different in colour. White eggs came from white leghorns.(if remembering his comments is correct). %-P

Decades ago there was a survey that I was asked to do to ask me what eggs I preferred--they said most people wanted brown eggs--and I now notice for years now thats all there is--you can rub off the brown too--I noticed this when I boiled them.

I am a little surprised that all the people who wont buy caged birds eggs,

are not concerned about halal meat production. Are the people on this

forum, not aware of how a beast is slaughtered under halal rules?

Yes Innes I am very concerned about the way the animals are treated and slaughtered--and very upset that the way they are treated when sent live to their country as they have NO respect for the animals at all

You can contact and have your say here

http://kb.rspca.org.au/What-is-halal-slaughter_116.html

Can also write to Tony Burke re this as I have

Gizmo do you know which day deliveries of the free range eggs

are put on the shelves at Aldi?

I often look for them but end up buying at the other Supermarkets.

Thanks....

I am also horrified at the way they insist the poor animals are slaughtered ,and it should never be allowed ,but it didn't dawn on me to mention it in a discussion about eggs silly me

Tadpole have you seen the way the animals are treated when they are sent live to their country--now THAT is heart breaking---we should be doing more to stop this --I have written tomy local memeber without a lot of satisfaction--and have now wriiten again to the Goverment--see what reaction I get this time
