Driving Experiences - Rules and Regualtions Updates

Queen's Birthday long weekend Double Demerit Post has revealed some valuable expertize from a couple of our members Shagy Dog and Plan B ... both former Driving Instructors that have ofered to keep us updated with Rules and Regulations of the Road.

This covers NSW and WA and it would be nice to hear from members from the other states too and your thoughts and opinions on the laws especially as to how they relate to the Seniors.

Great to hear personal driving experiences from members.....whether informative or advisory.

Is that SD heading down the road ???

Davey,

The test is a damnn side harder than it used to be, in WA anyway.

I got my licence in Sydney and it was a lap around the block in a Mini Minor. You would not get away with a test like that today.

SD

It's taking my Daughter three years to get her full driving licence . This is the shortest time it takes in NSW ..

Overview – from learner to full licence

There are seven steps to progress from a learner to a full licence:

Pass the Driver Knowledge Test (DKT) – get your learner licenceHold your learner licence for at least 12 months, and complete 120 hours of supervised driving practice, including 20 hours of night driving (unless you’re 25 or older)Pass the Driving Test – get your provisional P1 (red) licenceHold your P1 licence for at least 12 monthsPass the Hazard Perception Test (HPT) – get your provisional P2 (green) licenceHold your P2 licence for at least two years (24 months)Pass the Driver Qualification Test (DQT) – get your full licence.

Actualy its four years ...So if you start out at Sixteen its 20 before you get your full license..

Both of my step kids took the test only a few years ago.

Both thought that they now knew everything about driving.

Both wrote off cars within months after being  tested as competent drivers ........even though I knew and told them that there were not.

They would not listen to me unfortunatly until after they had their prangs.

After then neither has had any problems since.

Pete,

It may be standard across all states now. It was heading that way when I bailed out.

The kids today are better drivers than we were by the time they get their full license.

Common sense, well that does not come naturally. A bit of life experience is needed there.

Take it easy.

Pete........why are there signs saying KEEP LEFT UNLESS OVERTAKING .

I do pass on the left if I have to but prefer to pass on the right.

I have driven B52 bombers, Quantas pasenger jets, racing yachts and trains.

I wasnt going to tell you that but wif all the bragging goin on decided I mite as well join in.

My eyesite and reflexs are perfect as i wood expect em to be at my age. sO dont forget i am better dan yu.

yes i am , no yur not, yes .........

LG,

Yeah it does sound a bit like bragging but the point I was trying to make was no matter what we have done none of us are perfect, we are all subject to faults and foibles over time.

Having a driving test from time to time can only be a good thing.

Take it easy.

SD

This is not bragging at all but only laying facts on the table.

We should all learn from this,.
