DOES THIS MAKE YOUR BLOOD BOIL?

The City News has been updated today, so for those who are interested, here is the article.

The cost of providing pensions to boomers and retirees is coming at the cost of an intergenerational war as younger people start to bridle at the economic weight of carrying Australia and its feted pensioners forward. ALEX DUNNIN beats the drum.

THE richest people in Australia are the baby boomers and retirees who collectively control the lion share of Australia’s wealth, real estate, super fund assets and share markets.
How ironic then it is that these same people who, after years of accumulating wealth on the back of sustained housing and investment booms and continually getting tax breaks, incentives and subsidies, have just won a review into their pension entitlements.
However, 10 of the 13 interest groups represented on the review panel, being aged care, pensioner and retiree lobbyists, means we hardly need to wait for the report or join the 11 city and regional centres public hearings roadshow to figure out that they’ll be recommending the $14,000 a year age pension is too low and that it needs to rise urgently.
If only younger people who no longer get free university education or health care, or who are locked out of the housing market by these investing boomers driving up home prices and causing the worst housing affordability crisis in living memory had this kind of political muscle.
But with two million age pensioners, the government had little choice, despite these age pensioners already receiving $26 billion in annual benefits, a figure that they are committed to lifting anyway following the Budget decision to relax the rules around how age pensions are indexed.
If you think these are tough words then it’s time you caught up with what’s happening in the blogosphere and what’s being written in newspaper letters to the editor pages because signs are emerging that young people are beginning to tire of all the handouts that seem to continually get thrown at the boomers and retirees.
Add in how generation X and Y are the ones who are now expected to make the economic and lifestyle sacrifices needed to fix the climate change mess left to them by their parents and forebears and it could reach a flashpoint.
However, the tension stepped up a notch when Prime Minister Kevin Rudd announced his plan to promote Asian languages in schools, causing a flurry of newspaper letter writers identifying themselves as pensioners to demand any language funding be instead immediately diverted to their pension cheques.
Given that the Budget surpluses that fund the post-60 superannuation tax breaks and that will fund the future pension increases are the direct result of our booming economic relationship with Asia, China and India, this is tantamount to a declaration of generational war.
But if it’s a problem now, it’s only going to get worse as the number of age pensioners doubles over the next 20 years while the number of working taxpayers they will be dependent on for their pension payments increases by only half.
And if young people feel ignored now, imagine how they’ll feel when they learn that this growing age pension expense is not only going to be a bigger drain on our national Budget but the requirement to lower national taxation rates so we can compete in a tougher global economy increasingly dominated by a low-taxing Asia means there will be even less government money available for education, health, housing and national infrastructure.
However, the pension problems of today’s retirees do have a silver lining. It shows young people why taking their superannuation and long-term retirement savings seriously is so important, unless we want to end up like today’s crop of struggling complaining pensioners.
Super might have just had its worst year on record but we must never forget that super and all the tax-breaks it offers will always be the best-possible structure for long-term saving. The sooner we climb on board that money train the richer and more powerful we will become, too.

An article by Alex Dunnin in the current issue of City News, a free paper in Canberra, has me so angry. Front page heading is "Do These People Make you Sick - they will if you are young and starting to realise the cost of providing ever increasing pensions to baby-boomers and retirees, the richest people in Australia who collectively control the lion's share of Australia's wealth. Alex Dunnin says an intergenerational war is emerging as younger workers start to bridle at the economic weight of carrying Australia's feted pensioners." This disgusting article is continued on page 13 under the heading "Why the young are getting cranky." You can google the complete article by going to Australian sites and type in CITY NEWS . I would like to see this publication inundated with responses, but I would also like to know what the participants of this site feel about it.

Yep, sure does! These people obviously don't have any close relatives trying to survive on a pension. They need to try living off $270 a week! And the politicians too for that matter! At 54 I'm at the younger end of the 'baby boomers' and on a Disability Support Pension. That's it. No 'accumulated wealth', I have a small amount of Super...and I mean 'small', not even enough to buy a new car...I own no real estate, have no investments and I rent privately. Some of us baby boomers need the governments help.

Thanks koko, I wasn't savvy enough to include the link. I was so p....ed off, I wasn't thinking straight. I spent yesterday going through some responses to a survey on Finances and Lifestyle, and could have cried at some of the comments. So this article coming on top of that experience was enough to tip me over the edge.

Beth I feel for you, and let's hope that if we survive until February, that the Government will address the enormous inequties in Australian society.

Jade, I have a daughter who keeps on telling me they are sick of supporting pensioners, they are both working, BUT, she doesn't stop to think that we worked for many many years also and payed taxes all of those years. There was no superannuation scheme when we were working. I do remind her of this fact, they think they are the only people who work, she is always complaining about rent etc. I might add, she lives on the Gold Coast and pays $440 PW rent so that they can have a swimming pool. She has an 18yr. old daughter and a 22yr. old son still living at home and bludgeing on them. It never ceases to amaze me that she can accept this situation. I would never have allowed my kids to do this to us. Her kids just refuse to look for work, they would be out of the door in a flash if they were mine. She also goes crook about her Sister who is on a carers pension as her husband is a paraplaegic and has a son with Asbergers and ADHD. She thinks her sister should be out working, I tell her I would like to know how. These people not in these situations have all of the answers.

ceemgee I was beginning to think I was the only one who felt this way. This younger generation want it ALL AND they want it now. We did not have the benefit of superannuation, and I know all our money went on saving for a home, educating our children and having a family holiday once a year. This new generation does not seem to feel that they, or the country, owe the older generation anything. Maybe if the younger generation were to look after their parents, as was the expected thing not so many years ago, then we wouldn't need the pension? I wonder if they have thought of that.

Well I feel for all of you in this rotten stiuation we older folk find ourselves to be in.

Did you know that you have paid for your person if you have worked and paid income tax? I am sure I have put this on here but have tried to get it on many sites as far too many folk take what they are told these days - that they are lucky that they get this payment because it is a safety net - well it is NOT. It is a RIGHT because you have paid into the now consolidated revenue for it.

This business with baby boomer and retirees putting up the cost of housing started with the retired Governor of the Reserve Bank - cant remember his name - he wrote that these people were using up their children's inheritances and also pushing up cost of housing by sitting on the expensive real estate. Rubbish of course. as we all worked blooming hard to earn the money to get a house if lucky - many just rented all their lives and we never had First Home Owners Grants or Family Allowances or the trillion handouts the younger ones get and for sure no baby bonus' to go buy our selves a car or extra drugs - many were blue collar workers who got by from pay to pay - no holidays and for sure did not 'urinate' their pay up the wall of the local boozer as many say today when discussing pensioners.

Who started off this rotten divide and rule - not sure - but I do know that the youngsters are being taught by political correctness invented by Gramsci in 1917 in Moscow to stop men fighting for the family and country and one of the first things was to teach kiddies to have no respect for the parents, teachers or authority - do what they wanted - girls to be promiscuous and have many kids by many fathers and demand men's jobs be given to them and not to marry etc etc - well I for one think it has worked really really well.

Also the housing problem is actually caused by a constant increase in the number of immigrants coming into the country - why anyone would blame older folk who live here because they are Aussies - but then business wants cheap labour and that means bringing in as many immigrants as possible and of course they pay big donations to political parties - both majors.

Kevin 737 is bringing in 300.000 this year (60% increase) to a country that already has a shortage of housing which has seen rents increase dramatically and house prices soar, maybe static or going down in a few places but where the work is - still going up. Bob Carr said when Premier of NSW - 1000 immigrants a week were pushing the house prices in Sydney thru the roof and only the Feds could stop that. But, none of the major parties even mentioned immigration on the last election or any other, because business insists on it and needs to increase its market and it labour pool to keep costs down. It was about this time that the retiring gov of Reserve did his bit on baby boomers etc - business men sit on the board of that Bank - they want us divided so can push thru their agenda's to get bigger profits. Profit and Greed rule the world these days, sadly people come way down the list.

It is not only the housing that is a worry, it is the water situation also with bringing more immigrants into the country. I don't know whether you heard on the radio this morning, the latest idiocy, girls who have late term abortions are still going to get the "baby bonus". I was horrified. If the Government can afford to do this, then why can't they help women who desperately want a baby and can't have one of their own, with IVF. It is such a terrible expense for them and yet, the Govt. is prepared to pay for young girls to have abortions.

The trouble is, the young ones think it is their right to have their drugs, sex and alcohol and they haven't worked a day in their lives to even make a contribution toward what they want and demand, and they object to us "oldies" having a pittance to live on. I think its so immoral to allow this sort of thing to go on. I sound like a miserable old fool, but it makes me so mad.

oh thanks BigVal I have always wondered where this PC came from and all the rubbish that follows it, now I know Gramsci, but if he started in 1917 how did it all take so long to migrate round the world? I certainly never encountered it in my childhood or young age, but when it started it was like Bamboo shooting up everywhere and too hard to eradicate.

Thank you Jade. Ceemgee, I agree, these kids are so selfish. I'm lucky, my kids will always help me out if I need it. But in saying that, one of my sons has that opinion that the younger generation is supporting us. Yes, they forget that we paid our tax all those years. And I think it's even worse for the diggers..my father being one..they manage to buy a home and keep it so they'll have something to pass on to their kids. Then when they go into a nursing home, the house has to be sold and the money invested to keep them. DVA consider the house an asset and he gets a full pension...when you have that sale money in investment to pay your way in the nursing home, they don't get a full pension anymore. What a ripoff! And these diggers and their wives have been through a war!

As a PS to my original post..I've just spent $95 at the chemist, which certainly wasn't in my budget. $60 was a deposit on a Nebuliser, which I'll get back when I return it, but I still had to FIND the $60. That's pretty steep for a pensioner. I reckon the chemist should take pensioners into consideration re the deposit.

I'd like to say to these kids, don't criticise until you've walked in my shoes.

Started 70's and then 80's until all state run schools have teachers who are taught pc way. I have friends who are retired teachers and they have shocking tales to tell re younger ones not being able to spell and teaching kids! Current ones not allowed to say anything or lose their places they tell me.

Why it took so long - had to start with the Uni's although they had a good start in Cambridge England in the 1930's when all those communist traitors were indoctrinated - and today far too many left wingers or communists really - or just plain pinko having found Communist parties to be banned or on the nose joined the ALP as next best - also seem to gravitate to public service so infest all bureaucracies and then you start wonder why they are so stupid at times! Which is why you seem to get this -" we have ways of making you do this " heavy handed like the Soviets were - today even.

used to have lots of links for political correctness but lost the lot when my last computer died a sudden death !! Will try to find some for you - interestingly it is all over the western world as this was the target for the communists to stop our men joining up and fighting - didn't work in WW2 either but had worked by time our lads came home from Vietnam and people spat at them for being baby killers. Most of the media vote Labor so many are very left wing. As you will have noticed over last year or so - very into Rudd but now a bit astonished I reckon. Watch Insiders on ABC 9am Sundays worth it as instead of praising Rudd and hating Howard these days they are a bit confused seemingly and not sure where it is all heading - bit like me but since have lived thru Labor governments before particularly Hawke/keating years - know how bad it can get but not usually as fast as 8 months into a term. And on internal matters not those influenced by overseas stuff such as the sub prime debacle.

I do agree - water is worrying - and all the various governments do is to argue for their own interests which are usually those of the big business donators' to their two parties so the two majors agree when business benefits you will find.

You are not qualifying to be a 'grumpy old man or woman' as you don't sound like your Mum or Dad - as we were not that bad - okay we had funny hair styles and liked the Beatles and jived and drank Green goddesses or Mountain Wine at the local palais but we behaved ourselves and didnt have babies for the unmarried mums pension as it didnt exist back (came from Gough Whitlam Labor 1972-75) then - because I for one and all my friends were brought up to wait until married. Old fashioned morals were so much better even though we probably moaned back then -

we respected our parents and got home at time they said usually if we couldnt get out of it that is:)

Beth said I’d like to say to these kids, don’t criticise until you’ve walked in my shoes.

Yes very true - but just think of the stink they would be kicking up if they were right now - we have to stick together - not be divided into those on their own and those still with a spouse. Or they win and we lose.

Talk about supporting the older folks--what about all the dole bludgers--and such that don't and won't work--but are fit and able to surf etc etc--but always find some way of getting out of work.

My own kids used to rant and rave about the unfair advantages we "oldies" have. I just took it with a grain of salt and felt that eventually they would grow up and see how the world really works....... but they DONT (grow up). The young ones are part of the "ME" generation......they are primarily interested only in themselves. They GIVE nothing.......for every dollar they part with, they expect "quid pro quo".

Ask anyone who collects for charities......its rarely the young who part with money. I dont know if it has been TV, the internet, political correctness, breakdown of the family unit etc......but our society has lost a great deal of its traditional values.

I know that we all live in our own little world and dont see beyond our own personal horizon, but I am disheartened by what I see....... and cant think of any way to reverse the trend.
