Do you worry about younger generations?

three generations of women

A new survey of around 3000 'seniors' has found that most identified and sympathised with the challenges faced by younger generations, such as unemployment and job security, housing affordability, education, mental health, and climate change.

They're also worried about their physical health and wellbeing, use of drugs and alcohol, issues with violence and crime, a lack of discipline and respect, the impact of social media and technology, and poor parenting – all issues within their control.

The research is further evidence that the 'intertgenerational war' commonly promoted by the media, doesn't exist.

"There’s too much commentary from economists and opinion writers that pits older people against younger generations," says National Seniors CEO Professor John McCallum.

"What’s been missing in the conversation is what each generation thinks about the other. This report goes some way to filling that gap.

"Whilst there were negative views on some younger people’s behaviour, the majority of the comments were positive.

"In fact, far from frowning about younger people, many seniors have empathy and expressed admiration and respect for them."

The survey indicated that while concerned for younger people, most older people were positive about the direction of ensuing generations.

"My experience with the young indicates the future is in good hands," said one participant.

Another added, "Mostly they seem to have the right ideas, even if we oldies don’t appreciate them."

The report also revealed the sentiment that younger Australians may not be able to lead as fortunate a life as previous generations.

Respondents also disliked the perception that older people are 'against' younger people and would prefer increased promotion of intergenerational solidarity.

Do you worry about younger generations? What are you biggest concerns for them? Do you care for the oft-promoted 'intergenerational war'? What are you thoughts about the younger generations?

I think they are too wrapped up in their looks and not enough attention paid to morals and character,  only from what I have seen but I don't have many friends of the very young age..

So many seem to be so enamored with face book and the likes and take too much notice of such and have to get likes etc

Hi Jane. Sandi. and I are hoping all is well with you. Miss you, SO glad to see you are going along o.k. Not to long until our birthdays :) I am not to sure whether we had it better when young, as life sure was less complicated than the youth today face. Take care will let Sandi. know you are o.k. and I will e-mail you. Hugs.

Hi Phyl. Good to see you back :)

I feel positive about the younger generation.  They are switched on and so much more present and aware in their thinking.  I hope their bodies can adapt to the environmental challenges that are coming up.  Nature as a whole is in decline thanks to human activities and mistakes made, and of course it also affects us.  Declining fertility, increasing childhood diseases and the AI pose great challenges for humanity.

Tottaly disagree with everything you have said Frankly.

The youth are all me, me, me, me and guess what?  Yes me they are totally and utterly self centred and need to grow up and live in the real world.

Some of the younger generation are a clued up lot, but that I have noticed is from the younger ones. Those closer to 18 and over seem to involved in having their heads down in to mobiles and can't see what the hell is going on around them. They are the ones with out a moral compass, no respect, no loyalty, and so self absorbed in their own little world.

I think your comments Beemee applies to those under 55 yrs of age!

I keep on hearing  ' I don't cook'  LOL

so they go out for a meal!   Thats why there are so many unhealthy people and the hospitals are full of sick people besides the virus problems.

I agree with all above. But I don't think young people have enough education or knowledge about managing finances. They seem to spend for today &/or tomorrow without much thought for the future. We now see so much financial stress because people have not saved for their future.

So true, but I think it applies to those under 55yrs Polly.

I worry for the younger generation with a world approaching crisis on so many fronts. We, the older generation do have to bear much of the responsibility for this but then we think we were doing it hard. Think, however, how our parents managed with so much less than we had.

I am in my early eighties and lived in the UK until the 1960s and looking back I am so much better off than my parents ever even hoped to be. I have lived in Australia through its golden years and feel sad looking at the changes of the last 20 or so years.

The facts is however that every generations expresses despair about the upcoming generation with criticism similar to that expressed in posts above.

PlanB is right on the money. It is my observation that the younger generation of today over fed, overindulged and very overrated. This all comes from, what would have been called years ago, the Americanization of Australia. They leave for dead, the part of the older generation, known as Keeping Up With The Jones's. All clothes have to be fashion labelled, very few go to barber shops, they seem to require the assistance of a hair stylists, to whom they pay ridiculous amount of money on a regular basis, in most cases to be butchered. They have very little or no regard for money, they don't save, borrow money to go on expensive holidays and when disasters such as COVID-19 strike, expect the Government eg. Taxpayer to bail them out. They show their great lack of intelligence by drug taking, sitting in front of video screens, playing senseless games for god knows how long, covering themselves in tattoos and piercings  (which once again cost the Taxpayer of Fortune) and in most cases believe anything they're told. Without a computer or a smart phone (very appropriate) in their hands, they can't add, spell the simplest of words or find their way around the city. Granted, these comments don't relate to all the young or not so young but they certainly apply to a damn good percentage of them. For some reason they seem to think they have the right to do whatever they please and are very insulted when their tapped on the shoulder and told no. I am really Disgusted when I hear of these Poor People who are forced into  Hotel Quarantine for 14 days, in an attempt to keep the general public safe, from whatever infections they may be contaminated with. They receive 3 square meals a day, more if they want, Air Conditioning, Television, Netflix, you name it, they've got it. And all they can do is whinge and carry on about their shocking treatment, how are they going to carry on, the state of their mental health and not one slight concern for their fellow man. Wouldn't these Sweet Delicate People have been a great asset in 1940 England during the blitz. Living in rubble, little food or fresh water and what food there was, rationed, little or no electricity and That's Right, the constant fear of bombs dropping on you. Yes these Delicate Creatures have got it pretty tough. And don't forget the reason they are in Hotel Lockdown it's because they continually insist on travelling from state to state or country to country, which should have been knocked on the head when covid first started. As you could probably guess I could go on for hours, however I'll give you a break and eagerly await your responses. Thank you, have a good day, stay Covid free, Jacka.

Oh boy Jacka, so much is spot on with your comments. Add to it as well, half or better have no idea how to cook. If its not in a packet, tin or delivered to the door cooked, they are fooked. In our day I could open the fridge and/or cupboard and combine them to make a meal. Many times I had to do that when visitors arrived unexpectedly.  I am talking about about 30+ years ago.  Imagine how it feels when someone loves the pasta dish served? All it was one time of cream of Chicken soup, precooked spaghetti, 1 chicken breast cut very thinly, a carrot sliced very thinly, and a sprinkle of fresh parsley on top. They thought I had created from hours of cooking. Never told them what I did by adding more of some spices to take away the "tin" clue.

I am fed up with hearing about those in NSW Lockdown, they brought it upon themselves by the protest march, which by all accounts, it is on again this Saturday. The gutless Govt should make the fines massive, and instead of the Robodebt, swipe the money to pay for the hefty fines and the quarantine out of their wages or unemployment benefit. There would then be no $50 million debt for quarantine which so many have yet to pay.

My 4 kids are okay, they know if they don't manage their money better, they will not get any help from us. The only consolation is if one is ill, ie when son had spinal surgery and now is not able to work for some time. But he said he postponed getting the surgery so he could put away some money in readiness for the down time. This is beyond his control, being an unplanned surgery so we will help out if he asks.

Jacka!  Brilliant I could not have put it better myself you need a medal!

I have been saying much of what you have stated here the last 30 years, especially what would these young idiots do if we had a WWIII today, they would not know how to cope.

PS: Bring back National Service Asap!

Hell yeah, bring national Subscription and maybe we could pull some of these vagrant, thieving, aggressive, youths into gear. If taught respect for themselves, it could be easier to respect others.

As for not able to cook or probably don't want to. Look at Maccas - where in hell is the veg???? I can only see meat in 1, 2 , 3 layers, cheese, bacon and that tiny bit of green is the slither of lettuce. Depending on what one is bought, it can be lettuce, tomato or pineapple.

I have never had a macca, but did years ago have one hungry jacks and it was a struggle to eat - where's the effing green?

I also wonder what will be left of our planet for the future generation too. Saw the frogs are dying and scientists don't know why. Sock eye Salmon are being cooked https://www.cbc.ca/news/science/salmon-climate-change-1.6114328 There are more sites regarding salmon other than this one.

Is this the way of the world now? Our PM is being pressured by USA, UK plus others about Climate Change, yet does nothing. States its under control for 2050. What a moron! its too late - make it 2030 and we may have a chance. But this klutz decided to add more mining in the last 12 months. This will not help our CQ2 levels.

This god damn man is an embarrassment to Australia, vaccine delivery - FAIL; Order more Vaccines - FAIL; Climate - FAIL; was pre-warned in 2020 to grab as much vaccine stock as possible and didn't - FAIL.

Right on BeeMee and Jacka,

I often wonder about this climate change and no matter what they do how the hell they are going to get rid of the radiation in and on the planet through the bomb tests and also the leakages -- from nuclear sites etc,  (they last for 25000 years or more,)   nothing has been mentioned about that,  it is as if it never happened.

Hi, Plan left you a message further up :)

Good to see you posting Phyl .. keep safe.

Replied to you Phyl,

Thanks for your thoughts

When I think what my late mother cooked when she came from a nice kitchen in the Uk in 1951 to what she cooked in it trial and error too.  Victoria Sponge Cakes and Eclairs!  Scones were always available too, it is not what you cannot do, it is what you try to do that is important.  I get cross with people that say they cannot cook. Food is too readily available these days if these 'uncookers' were hungry enough they would learn to cook.

I agree with you Celia. My mother could barely boil water but learned to cook. It may not have been elaborate but we were fed and all with a lot of vegetables, not frozen stuff. I have had to learn to cook as my mother could not teach me very much. Now I cook all kinds of ethnic foods (love Italian), vegan, typical English foods (hubby is English), as well a lot of my own inventions.

I think most of these uncookers are just plain lazy. Mother cooked for them so why should they cook for themselves.

Better be nice to the young uns, they have a big job on their hands providing funds for the oldies. Have some respect what a lot of ungrateful people. Shame on ya!

One thing is for sure the kids the last 55 years would not know how to cope if they had to do what our parents, grandparents did during WWII and WWI.  Even us as kids we did it tough too compared to what the kids have been doing the last 40 years.

Some six years ago we were asked to join the Primary School first years with grand daughter, she was like the other youngsters asked to put a few questions to us, I shall always remember one of those questions and it says a lot.

'How did you get to school in your day'

Husband replied he rode his bike and she was shocked!

I replied I walked. she was even more shocked.

So what do half the kids these days do getting to school ?

Mummy drives them of course!!

I really like young people, those I know and all of those I meet when out and about shopping or whatever. If I was a young person reading this thread I would not like the tone of most of the old people's views. They are disrespectful and arrogant! The primary theme is "We are better than you, also were better than you when we were young, and we have dealt with life more effectively".  What is the point of that competitive way of thinking? Young people today are facing hardships that we could not even dream of when young...like climate change, high rents and inability to buy homes, lack of secure work, this pandemic,....and I'm sure the list goes on. They have adapted to a world that has changed in so many ways since we were young and most that I know have a strong social conscience and treat me and other elderly people with respect and kindness. I would like to think it goes the other way around too and that most older people show caring, understanding and kindness to young people.

Young people need models not critics…so stand down those who attack them. You should be ashamed of yourselves! You are no models by any stretch of the imagination! I love young people …we have a wonderful relationship…I learn from them and hopefully I am able to impart something to them.

Yes...I worry about them because, unlike the older generation, they will have to navigate a troubled and difficult world and I pray they manage to do so.

“Older men declare war. But it is youth that must fight and die.”
 Herbert Hoover

I wonder if the girls today would bend over a hot stove and cook, work out change in the head and wash like our mothers used to or even we did? I do feel that the youth of today have it easier than the generations before us.
