Cruising on QE2

I mentioned in another post that an acquaintance of mine had cruised on the QE2 and would not sail on it again.

Spoke to her on Sunday and the problem was not the ship but those who sailed in it.

On her cruise she said it was quite noticeable the different "class" structures.

This lady is of British origin but she said she did not like what she saw.

Not a friendly ship...but that was the cruise she was on.  Others may have a different opinon on the QE2.

I am only passing on what she said.

It had nothing to do with the class system , People simply pay for what they receive . Wether that is airplanes , hotels , or ships .

I would suggest your friend would be more comfortable on a P&O cruise that caters to those that how can I put this , feel comfortable with their own .

Not quite Brocky...

We get a suite but outside the suite are the issues!  LOL

Dining room is fine we find with P & O probably as I have a dietary issue and my food has to be cooked fresh.

But in the public rooms and the entertainment it is below par of late and heading south.

I am wondering what their new vessel will be like, it is being constructed their first new vessel.

But we doubt we will go on P & O Australia again.

I feel more comfortable with PLU

I feel more comfortable with PLU

As I said this person is an "acquaintance" not a friend.  I am only passing on her opinion.  Yes, she probably would feel more comfortable on another ship .

From the little I know of this lady and her husband they are quite well to do and definitely not what I would call "bogan" class in any way shape or form.

I have no idea of her future cruising plans, if any.

Radish I can just imagine what your Friends meant,  I have a very well to do acquaintance that used to have to mix -- due to her job --with what she called      -- upper class pommy shit --  of which she said were the greatest snobs one could imagine.

I myself have also come across a few 'Pommies' -- NOT ALL -- that are ordinary people but have a very inflated opinion of themselves and really look down and even call us born here Aussies – ‘Colonials’

LOL oh yes Plan B.....the 'Colonials'................thats how the SA and Zim immigrants that come to Perth come across to me.

I have one in the street!  Better not say anymore......

Most of them at least had a maid, if not a Nanny and a gardener.

When they come to Australia it is a hard learning curve.

When I hurt by back some years ago, I had a lady come to clean and iron, I paid her back then $25 an hour.  When my sister in law came over from Cape Town she said Oh I pay my lady that too!   I replied that is for an hour not a day!  Oh dear she said and looked rather shocked.

I also know of a lot of pommys that have been here for decades but never have become Aussie till they reach pension age then they rush to get citizenship for the pension

Then why raise the issue!

You sound like another nasty person who got the boot!

I will not engage with you again!

lol lol lol - wouldn't be "BaraK" would it by any chance?????  Nahhhhhh - no way!  lol lol lol - and whooooooosh "pigs might fly"!     :-)

I really don't understand the point you are trying to make ,

Your friend felt uncomfortable on the QE2 ??

Morning Brocky.

I think, like me Radish is trying to make polite conversation and mentioned her friends felt uncomfortable on that vessel.  Nothing more.

I know what is meant, we feel like black sheep on P & O Australia and doubt we shall go on that line again. We don't like Booze Cruises...that is the term we use for cruises that just let passengers run riot with the spirits and beer!   Drinking in moderation on some lines is not good, we think they sell cheap cabins and make the differences up with selling spirits and beer...... we like to meet new people and exchange conversation, which is few and far between on that line......in our humble opinion.

Our favourite shipping line is HAL.  or Fed Olsen....like them both.  Have not been on Cunard, perhaps we should.

Everyone to their own.

Have cruise for donkeys years.

When we cruise we notice it is the luck of the draw.    Some cruises turn out to be better than others. Went on the Sun Princess last December, in all the cruises we have done we never caught the Novo virus this time we did.

We cruised on the same vessel back in 2010, then they had issues with the vaccume system which operates the toilets.  Toilets flooding and people getting sick.

This last cruise we caught the Novo virus, that was after taking  [per usual] hand sanitizers and antibiotic soap, which we used.   The ship smells of sewerage too.

But the crew kept on saying the people that caught the virus did not wash their hands having used the toilet.  Well not on this ship.

I am on Cruise Critic [spelt correctly] I got onto the section of the Sun Princesses and some of the passengers log on and write to the site of the CC.  On the last day of the cruise around the Whitsundays a lady explained that the cruise she was on they did not have a case of the Novo Virus.

This would be the first cruise in months, she went on to explain they had closed the Library down. Which explains why the virus was spreading.  Nobody washes the books or the games that are housed in the Library.

Talking about different class of ships, reminds me of years ago when they had First Class and Economy  [to think of another word].   Perhaps we need to go back to those days as the last three cruises we have been on we had nothing in common with the boozers.   Apart from joining the Trivia and conversations with people we had something in common, the cruises were not up to standard.

For instance P & O Aust., we don't think are in the same league as P & O Europe.  We like HAL and R Carribean are not bad.   Like Fred Olsen in Europe.  Have not been on Cunard, perhaps next time.

What the cruise lines did say to me when I had a converstion with them, the longer cruises are the ones with the more serious cruisers and are not booze cruises.    We usually go on back to back cruises, so a 14 day cruise turns into a 28 day cruise.

We are begining to think our cruising days are over around Australian waters due to all the cheap births and all the boozers.   They spoil it for everyone that don't like to go crazy partying and getting drunk.

I have been on several cruises and never a problem..love it..must mention though I have never had the misfortune of being on a "boozy" cruise..

Ann..you mention the HAL ..do you recall the Willemstad and the sister ship Orangestad? When a teenager my parents took us to the West Indies and those two ships were the ones very popular at the time..

Hi Thea.

Yes, but never went on a HAL vessel in those days.  My parents went of P & O Orient as it was called back then..........Today it is called P  &  O international...

We've not had the Novo virus before last December, but it explains  alot when they closed the Sun's library down!  We used the board games and hubby likes to read from their library.  I usually take a book.

The Oriana, Oransay, Orontes, and two others but I cannot remember unless I do a search.

I think the ships that do the WA coast are probably the boozie cruises! Although this cruise on the Sun was ex Fremantle to Tasmania/Melbourne and back.

Will stay away from the Sun in future!

She looked so ultra modern in her day too!

The first passenger ship that could move sideways I always remember, no tugs needed really.

How sweet Ann..I didn't think you were going to do a search and such a comprehensive one too...loved the pictures of the Oriana..

We did go from Southampton to the West Indies on the Oriana and then we had short trips on the Willemstad and Orangestad. Those two ships were named after the capitals of Curacao and Aruba respectively..

I believe the reason we can't find anything on them (and I did a search too)..is because they must have been replaced by bigger and better ships..sent to Davy Jones' Locker by the look of it..

Thanks anyway..lol

Hi Thea.

The ship we came out on 'The Somersetshire' still has a photo on the net and that was scraped donkeys years ago, I would have thought those two ships would have had some records on the net.  I will put in different wording. I am used to research on the net, used to be an editor of two news letters.  Was always searching for something interesting, it did not take long to find that bit of info.  Plus I type quickly!  LOL

Just said good bye to oldest son, came to see me today as I have not beenwell. Brought some lovely flowers and wine for hubby and a pack of 24 600ml bottles of water!   He knows we find it difficult to pick up all those bottles!

Thea I have looked up HALs old boats and those that have been or are being scrapped just now, and I cannot find those two vessels.  it is very strange.  I can only suppose that they were sold off and renamed.

No cruising for me, too slow paced. Give me business class anytime on Emirates!

Hi Reagan.

Too slow, goodness you are missing some of the night spots on the cruises. Definately for the night owls that like Night Clubs.

Business Class is the only way to travel with our old backs!  Nothing like putting ones feet up and having a nap.  We have a collection of the little toiletry bags...not everything gets used.    Never liked using the eye masks anyway.  But the mini tooth brush and paste is good.

But once you get off where do you go Reagan?

We like to cruise as it is easier than rushing through airports.  Due to hubby's spine he gets a wheel chair and I follow!  Passed all the queues.

I think the days of bunny hopping to destinations are over for us.

May fly to catch a cruise ex Vancouver, there is a cruise up to Alaska and coming back to Sydney which we fancy.    See how the health goes.

From a female perspective Reagan it is a nice break from cooking, washing, ironing, shopping.

10 days or maybe 14 is enough for me though.

my god - didnt realise women like you still existed . lucky hubby

I do all of the above in my house

Yes Radish exactly!

Don't understand Raphael?   You must be single!  Husband and I share the load.

He cuts the lawn and I rake up, I cook and he does the dishes.  I put the washing in the machine and he takes it off the line. We both go shopping these days, although I do miss going shopping alone!!   Hubby does a little then rests, does a bit more then rests....he hates not being useful.

Mind you Radish, each disembarkation I think it will be nice to get home and cook a meal!

What I do hate about cruising is the unpacking and washing and ironing upon getting home.  LOL

Even if I was partnered/married I wouldn't want that life

Jesus I'd rather be dead than have a routine like that

sorry , just my humble point of view

By the way - why don't you do your washing in the ship. Makes more sense

less stressful and you carry less luggage

You are a strange one Raphael, we do laundry on the ship as you put it.

But we don't like to wear clothing more than once thank you!

Not like that before husband had his spinal issues......you seem very narrow minded, just my humble point of view too!

Ann..apologies..apologies..this was niggling at me so I contacted my brother in the UK who told me it was not the HAL but Royal Netherlands..

He sent me an old shipping list but of course we travelled much later (1970) ..I was 13..however the ships are there and boy..do they bring back some memories!

How interesting Thea!  I have not heard of them....I've learn't something to day.

Yes memories, happy ones I hope.   I've not been to that part of the world but would love to visit a friend in Aruba. We both would like to go through the Panama Canal.     Husband has not been through Suez but I have four times, we both have been through the Kiel Canal, that was interesting.  I had not heard of the Kiel Canal till 15 years ago when a Fred Olsen ship took us!

Lots of happy memories Ann..if you ever get the chance to visit Aruba you won't regret it..

I found this old picture of Aruba in the 1970s on the net...

Yes I can only but hope Thea, would be nice to meet my friend.

Well once again the Sun Princess was the main feature on ACA last night.  I have mentioned before that there is no way I would go on this ship.   Believe it needs to be scrapped.  So many bad stories in the last twelve months.

Noticed there was also a complaint about a Royal Caribbean ship...cannot remember the name, but not as bad as the Princess  from what I saw.

Some cruises attract a certain clientele and in my opinion it pays to be selective in the line you choose to cruise with.

P & O is not one I would go with.

Radish hi.

Sorry but what is ACA and what was mentioned please?
