Cost-of-living relief for pensioners doubled

The South Australian government is more than doubling the cost-of-living concession for 185,000 residents.

Eligible homeowner occupiers will receive a one-off payment of $449 in the next financial year compared to the previous $217, while homeowner-occupiers who are also self-funded retirees will receive $224, up from $108.

SA Premier Peter Malinauskas said the price of everything was going up and he was unable to change that.

“I want to be honest, as leader of the state, I’m not going to be able to reduce your petrol prices. It’d be just untrue if I said otherwise,” he said.

“Premiers can’t control the price of groceries, either, but what we can do is those concessions that are aimed at the people doing the toughest in our community, people on low incomes, fixed incomes, such as pensioners, for instance, we can provide support.”

The concession can only be paid to one person per household, and to be eligible, the person must live at the property and hold an eligible card, such a pensioner concession card or Department of Veteran Affairs card, receive an eligible Centrelink payment, or meet low income provisions.

I am not going to be popular saying this (not that I care), but not all pensioners need that money. What about the young people on allowances, do they get it?

Also, why do tenants have to wait nearly a year for their increase, while homeowners and others receive it this year? Tenants costs are high now and will be for the next 10 months or so.

Good point. These increases go to the wrong people.

Firstly, if young people haven't got enough money they can get off their ass and get a job or a second job, whereby pensioners who are old and decrypted can't. Secondly, without home owners, eg. property owners there wouldn't be any tenants, so count your blessings responsible people supply housings for those who aren't. Jacka.

If as you say, you are "old and decrepit (correct spelling) what do you need more money for?

I take issue with your generalisation, Jacka, that those who rent are irresponsible. We rented for some time while we saved for a deposit on a home. People who rent may do so for many reasons such as divorce, prolonged illness forcing the sale of the family home or working in jobs that involve transfers from time to time.

so the old and decrepit suddenly don't need money for food, clothing, medicine, rent, electricity, gas,  etc etc Sophie?

Sophie,

I think you are completely out of touch.

The "old and decrepit" in particular spend a great deal on medicines and medical services.

A little compassion and understanding ...

Oh, I have compassion all right. My taxes help pay for Medicare... vastly reduced medicines and burial allowance for those who cannot afford it. What more do you want??

Everyone who works Sophie pays taxes.

Even the old and decrepit would have paid taxes.

So ... are you suggesting that those unfortunate enough to have medical conditions that severely eat into their pensions be kicked to the curb.

So if/when the cost of living levels off and falls, will the recipients of this additional largess give up the increase or will they demand it continues indefinitely?

Are you joking KSS....they will ask for it to be increased!!
