Concept is sound but idiots will be idiots

Bicycles and scooters are polluting the streets, the waterways and the parks.

I applaud the companies that are trying to offer these modes of transport around cities but the schemes simply do not work.

Remember when supermarket trolleys were free and unlocked? Not any more.

A few years back there were the blue bikes, then came the yellow OBikes and most of those ended up in the Yarra. The latest are the red and green Lime bikes and e-scooters and I see them everywhere they're not supposed to be. Used and abused and dumped on nature streets and beaches and waterways.

Is there a solution? Can such scheme ever work or will the idiots make sure they don't?

One way is to charge a big deposit or other forms of security to force the rider to return the scooter or bike to where it was hired from. Another way would be to attach a hidden security plate to each one and require the hirer (by Law) to give their name and address. This would be recorded with the security plate number in a file and allow the person to be located and FINED if the scooter is not returned.

Abandoned scooters pose a tripping hazard when they are left on streets and footpaths. One of the biggest problems with them, though, is what councils cutely term "non-compliance". In other words, scooter riders are ignoring rules, speeding on footpaths, riding while intoxicated or under the influence of drugs and generally behaving however they like. According to councils, they have no way of enforcing rules because they can't identify the culprits. And am I the only one who hates the idea of wearing a helmet that's been worn by some previous, possibly unclean or even diseased previous rider?

Boris bikes in London and the bicycle hire in Paris, no helmets required, unlike the nanny state here in Australia. Hired with a credit card, charged hourly or if used cleverly very cheap for the day.

Thank goodness we don't live in Melbourne;    here in WA we don't have these issues especially with supermarkets.

As for the scooters only yesterday one of the Year 11 or 12 students in a Private College nearly got run over by me because he had this flash electric scooter coming out of the side road over the main road!  Hubby sent the Principal an email pointing out that they need to be more mature before letting them use these scooters.

Has anyone been to Holland and seen the bikes over there?
