Hi Carly, I have been to both islands on a number of occasions & I would recommend the South Island of New Zealand as one of the most scenic places on Earth.I stress that I am only speaking for myself, but I have always found that Bus Tours tend to be expensive. As a general rule, I have found that 2 people can hire a car & purchase a bulk motel package from one of the bigger operators for a very reasonable nightly rate. My only criticism would be that food has got a lot more expensive in the last 2 or 3 years. Driving is a delight because there is hardly any traffic.

Best time to go is May, because you are just starting to get some snow, but no roads are blocked yet. There is no end of spectacular scenery, but must see places, The Mirror Lake, on the way to Queenstown, Mount Cook, A jet boat ride on the Shotover River, (expensive but fantastic) A boat trip in Fiordland, The glaciers at the Haast & Frans Josef & a fair bit out of your way up north to the Arthurs Pass, which I reckon is better than the Upper or Lower passes of Switzerland

thank you for you repy, what is the best motel group and who do we look for to find them
