Clubs and Community

Good morning all!

For Tuesday 21 July, we will be looking at Clubs and Community in our Enewsletter. We are interested in knowing which Clubs and community services/events you are currently involved with so that we can provide relevant content to our subscribers.

It would be appreciated if you could provide the names of organisations and activities you are involved with so we can give other members the opportunity to get involved.

Thanks!

I live in the A.C.T. and I belong to a newly formed club located in the Tuggeranong Valley called the 55 Plus Club, for anyone 55 and over. This club was formed just over 12 months ago, under the wing of Communities@Work. The activities undertaken are limited only by the imagination of the members. If the members want to do something and there is sufficient interest from other members, then we do it. With help from the ACT Government, we hope to have our own club house within 18 months to 2 years. It is our intention to have a docking area for people with scooters to recharge them whilst attending activities at the club or just dropping in for a cup of coffee and a natter. Some of the activities currently available are tai chi, bush and lake walks, book club, carpet bowls, darts, cards, scrabble, social dancing, digital camera courses, basic computer courses, visual arts classes, trips, jazzercise and bike riding.

Once we have our own premises, we are looking to increase the activities on offer. A baby grand piano has been donated, so we are looking forward to having our very own choir. We are also intending to start a theatre and movie group, so that we have take advantage of the group discounts.

We are actively working towards becoming a multi-cultural group with the intention of fostering a better understanding of different cultures.

Sounds fantastic Pommy.

The only club I belong to is the local Bowling--and I don't bowl--I have just joined to go there for the occasional meal--maybe twice a year--I have my meal and leave--. It would be good if we had a club that had some lessons in different things. I am not into social gatherings but would like to have courses to learn new things.

Pommy, not only sounds fantastic, but is fantastic! Just goes to show what seniors can achieve if they get off their computers and get out into the real world.

Can visitors attend, as guests, when visiting Canberra?

Here in Darwin we have a Pensioner's Workshop which is very well fitted out for both woodworking activities and crafts.

I attend T'ai chi which was started by seniors some years ago. I am also a very well supported volunteer for a number of community organizations.

Hello, I live in Qslnd ,on Bribie Island. We have lots of Clubs here as we are mostly retired people. As well as the obvious ones like Bowls & Golf,we have a Croquet Club, two or three Walkers Clubs, & a very active Arts & Crafts Center.

I have also seen a group gathered at one of our lakes sailing beautiful model yachts, that looks like fun.

I am not very active now & cant attend a lot of Clubs ,but if anyone from Bribie is reading this, send in what you go to here,

I also notice there is nothing on the Activities list here for our Post Code, come on help this good idea along. :-)

I live in a seniors complex,,( government) every friday we meet for coffee and cake,, every 2 weeks we have a sausage sizzle, we find out what is happening to all the seniors who live here,

its just a pity more dont of the seniors who live here but wont join in.

we have lots of laughs together and all who come enjoy the company

Brandy, in response to your question about visiting our Club in Canberra. We welcome all visitors, as long as they are over 55. However, because we are using the facilities of Communities@Work, members come along to a specific activity. Once we have our own premises, this will obviously change, because we will have a lounge room for people to drop in. In the interim - we are trying to book the hall for a couple of hours sometime over the weekend, on a monthly basis for a get-together.

I have to commend the clubs in the A.C.T. It is possible to get cheap dinners (about $6.00) every day of the week, by going to different clubs. I commend them because they have obviously organised not to have the cheap meals on the same day.
