CHOICE reveals its best supermarket hot cross buns

The range of hot cross buns these days is confounding. Remember when we thought chocolate chip was a bit exotic? There seems to be new varieties every season and a few seen on supermarket shelves this season include rum and raisin, salted caramel and mocha. I love apple cinnamon.

To take the stress out of choosing, consumer advocate CHOICE has rated its top buns.

If you are a traditionalist, best head to Woolworths. CHOICE gave its Luxurious Richly Fruited buns an 84 per cent rating. The Aldi Bakers Life Indulgent Traditional Fruit Bun was second with 73 per cent and another Woolworths bun, the Indulgent Brioche Fruit Hot Cross Bun, was third with 72 per cent.

The best chocolate hot cross bun went to Aldi and the best apple and cinnamon to Woolworths.

CHOICE taste tested 23 hot cross buns across traditional fruit, chocolate, and apple and cinnamon categories. The buns were bought from Coles, Woolworths, IGA, Aldi, Bakers Delight and Costco.

Do you like all the new flavours, or are you happy to stick with the classics?

forget about the Supermarket Hot Cross Buns I will be making my own as I have done so for the last 50 years.

I'm a traditionalist now diabetic ... might forego altogether this year ... cry.

RnR- - I too am Type 11 Diabetic.  I don't eat Hot Cross buns anymore, but if someone offered me one I would try half of one. You don't have to go without all the niceties in life, just cut back on them. I still make Scones and add Sultanas but never have cream and jam.  Go on RnR spoil yourself just this once.

LOL Hola ... might just do that.

We love our Hot Cross Buns as a mid-morning snack - one of our faves being the Coles Apple and Cinnamon.

Some years I have made my own, but couldn't be bothered anymore. I like the traditional bun with sultanas and a touch of cinnamon and of course lots of butter!

Yep me too Sophie!
