Centrelink wait times grow, again

Centrelink's annual report has revealed that call wait times are on the rise, again.

People waited an average of 15 minutes and 44 seconds to speak to someone, according to the report. This is up by 35 seconds compared to last year's 15 minutes and 9 seconds.

And this only represents the average, some lines were much worse than others:

  • those phoning the disability, sickness and carers line faced wait times of 28 minutes and 17 seconds
  • those phoning employment hotlines waited on average 30 minutes and 21 seconds
  • youth and students waited 31 minutes and 15 seconds on average (an increase of almost six minutes).

"I think it's important to make the point that it only represents a 35-second increase on the previous year," Centrelink spokesman Hank Jongen said. "And it is still within our target of 16 minutes."

I guess if you can't move forwards you can at least celebrate moving backwards at a slightly slower pace.

55 million calls were also met with an engaged tone.

What do you think of the wait times? I would be shocked if I got through in less than half an hour.

I think its reasonable - 15 mins is fine

After all if youre on welfare, youre not in any hurry to get anywhere - like work for example.

Put the call on the speaker and have a cup of tea

Chill !

Not all Centrelink payments are “welfare” aged pensions certainly are NOT welfare people paid for this pensions out of the taxes they have paid

Or are you one of those who have legally but immorally paid less taxes by using means to reduce the amount you would otherwise have paid

I have never got in in UNDER 16 minutes -why am I so unlucky. This in not for me as I am not on any centrelink payments (ie I do have other things to do) but for my 95+yo blind and deaf motherin law who needs to interact with Centrelink

Romeital - pension is welfare as its means tested

anyway the point I was making is if you’re on a pension , means you ain’t working , so stop being a snowflake and stay in hold for 16 minutes

wont kill you

I have never, ever waited only 15 minutes!! 45 minutes, yes, but not 15. That's only if I can get through and not getting the busy signal. I had to ring Centrelink technical support, there is no number to press for this, so I have to wait for someone to answer (45 minutes) just so she/he can put me on hold while he/she transfers me to the technical support area (another 45min). I am a carer, I have better things to do with my time, like care for someone! I have already rang 3 times regarding some glitch in my online account that technical support supposed to fix, and you guessed right, I have to ring them again, as after a month and three calls later, still not fixed!

15 minutes? It's well over an hour!!!

And listening to the same music, over and over again, have not changed it for years.

Raphael, If you believe that it only takes 15 minutes to get through to centrelink then you probably belive that there are faires at the bottom of your garden. And its a bit assumptive to assume that because someone has to ring centrelink that they have nothing else to do. That axe that you constantly grind must be getting a bit blunt by now.

Wow !!! A whole 15 minutes???

I wait longer than that at the dentist or doctors.  Did you have an appointment?

If I have to wait more than 15 mins at the doctor or dentist, I sent him a bill for my time

Understandable. You're more important than me. :)

Just try to ring Centrelink and see if you can get through within 15 minutes!! It takes a little bit longer, like 45+ minutes!

Do not have a problem with a quarter of an hour wait time either, but then I do not phone them

very often. Normally I see them at their office and the person with the tablet at reception usually

fixes things for me, mostly having to tell them when leaving the country and the date of coming

back. Cancelling one's pension card is not necessary as I leave mine behind here, no use in

overseas places.

The tablet holder at your office must be one of the conscientious Centrelink workers as the last time I went to my local office the tablet holder couldn’t give a hoot and made me wait 15 - 20 minutes to see another employee only to be told that the tablet holder could have sorted my query out with no wait

therein lies the problem how to government departments get rid of incompetent employees as Centrelink has many of bringing all their great staff down they probably promote them to their level of incompetence

It does not mention the senior's phone line.  When I had occasion to phone I waited 48 minutes on hold after the robot finally managed to work out I needed to speak to a person.  There was a list of items given with a number to press for service, however, none of those items given covered my enquiry.  When on hold the so called music is most unpleasant and probably causes many people top hang up the phone.

I am an aged pensioner and due to the magnanimous pension I receive no longer have a landline.

I rang Centrelink on my mobile and waited so long that my telephone credit ran out so I was disconnected. That was 3 months ago and I am still waiting to see if they call me back!

Freddie, you need to get an UNLIMITED monthly credit for your mobile from Telstra unlimited SMS and phone calls for 28 days for $30 PLUS you get 2.5 of data WHICH adds to 50G if you don't use it

Amaysin has $10 per month 1GB unlimited phone and test.

If they had a Universal Pension like other countries, they could get rid of most staff at Centrelink

The Australian Pension could be increased if the payment was simplified

As it stands it is grossly unfair to many people

They say for one example that your principle place of residence is not counted as an asset yet a couple renting can have over $200000 more in assets and get rent assistance If you’ve downsized and live in SA your house is probably not worth much more than that so it is counted as an asset for some

Best comment, Suze!

The statistics are Fake anyway, as they excluded 55 Million calls which got the engaged tone. Hank should quit for this reason alone.

I have been waiting 30 mins to  enquire with  toll ipec about a parcel  which wasnt delivered. i am still waiting as i type this..

That is unacceptable unhappy! Particularly since they have up to the minute, latest technology track n trace, they should know where your parcel is all the time.

I have waited an hour to catch a fish, but I know what you're thinking, it's relative to the situation. And you're right!

I ring Centrelink two to three times a week because I am doing it on behalf of other people. My average wait time is 45 minutes. I have never had a call answered within 15 minutes and when I get through - I have a 20% chance of talking to somebody that actually knows what they are talking about.

my experience exactly

15 minutes what a joke. If you have to call Centrelink try an hour and then they might hang up before answering. I don't know how they came up with 15 minutes but they're playing with the numbers.

The service? is an embarrassment to our country. People are quite often treated with contempt even if they do get through.

I have not managed to get through in under 28 minutes. Appointment times for call back are not adhered to and for those of us ringing on behalf of others it is a disaster.

For the desperate, it can be the catalyst that tips them into despair. There are other things people have to do.

However, I believe, it is the intention of the Centrelink Program to dissuade people from calling and, in so doing, save money by either having them hang up and do without or become so confused by the inconsistent information re eligibility that they cannot bring themselves to incur the wrath, insensitivity and contempt of the consultant on the other end of the line.

Bullying is alive and well. It is demoralising and the Australian Government should be ashamed.

Cant believe the comment by "Raphael".  "Sit down and chill you've got nowhere important to go like work for example".  I spent nearly 50 years in the workforce before retiring, and I would hardly consider it "Welfare".  A bloody insult "Raphael".  GET LOST.

Agree Deb Dickman - when one has put in one should get something back out if one lives long enough. Hawke changed the pension to some sort of welfare when super was brought in late 80s. Super might come of age when today's 20-year-olds get to 70. Till then it is supplementary to the Age Pension. Sad really that politicians get a pension without asset test and at the end of their days quite often a State funeral to send them on their way. And this is the land of equality.

Actualy Micha Raphy works at a very high level in finance ,

paying for your welfare .

Oops poor Deb got her knickers in a twist .

if pension was a right - everyone would get it . Wouldn’t be means tested.

pension is welfare -  given to those who are unfortunate to not have been able to save sufficiently for retirement

and the “chill” comment - waiting 15 mins when you’re a pensioner who doesn’t have to rush to work or rush home and look after kids - is no big deal

after all one should  take it easy when they retire - not get stressed over little things

also if wait time is to be reduced ,centerlink costs would increase due to more staffing - unless of course you privatized it so that centerlink could be run more edficiently

Shut up Raphael, go talk  to Brocky

Image result for chihuahua in a yellow jumper

Raph, that chil remark should be directed at Brocky. He had a hissy fit over a lolly. Imagine what he would do if he had to wait 15min?

They are probably doing it on purpose so they can go ahead with outsourcing to private company.

And 15 minutes is a joke, has to be at least 45 minutes.

I believe that it’s a done deal

3 year pilot program with a company called Serco will run the call center

I was on hold for 42mins the other day just to make an appointment for my 95 yr old mum re nursing home financial help. when I did get through the employee was extremely apologetic for the long wait. I appreciated her comments and got sorted quickly but I don't know where they get a 15 min wait from

It's an average 15 mins, yours was 42, the next person might have been 5 etc.

Before you open your mouth to insult anyone Raphael (aka Brocky),put your silly brain into gear. To say people have nothing else to do but stay on the phone to get answered by Centrelink is total rubbish. Many seniors are disabled, and should not have to stay hanging on like that.

Seniors, mostly pensioners contribute almost $39 billion each year in unpaid caring and voluntary work.  What do you do Raphael? Brocky said you are in "high finance". What is high finance?
