Can anyone recommend a good Video?

Mrs, Innes here.

I am getting worried about hiring movies from the video shop. Most of them seem to be crap!!!

Can someone here recommend something good?? TV is out, as I can rarely find something worth watching. Because of that I recently canceled Foxtel, and free to air is no better.

Most modern movies seem to be full of explicit violence or (almost) porn. Stuff I really don't want to see. Must say though, I did enjoy the Bucket List.

Mrs Innes, I agree that our choices on TV these days are far from exciting. As you say, it is also very difficult to find a good video and you wind up paying for the privelage of watching "duds". As a solution, I have lately been giving my local Library a workout - its free and I have rediscovered my love of reading. (you can also sign out DVD's there free of charge).

AAHHHHH!! Now your talking!!1 I have used my library very well, since i was about 19. I also get DVD's from there. Trouble is, so does everyone else!! Hahahaha. It means that anything good is nearly almost out. I have managed to get a few good movies from there though.

My favorite is reading - but it is solitary so it is nice to be able to sit and watch a good movie together. I just thought that people on here maybe able to tell me what movies they enjoyed so that if I hadn't seen it I could go and rent it.

I too find that most of the TV is crap these days--and they have taken off most of the good shows--what type of movie do you like--I have only had out 2 movies in the last 8 years--so am not of much help--I like the likes of "Shawshank Redemption" something with a good story--but not having had one out for years I can't be of any help--I am also interested in what others would recommend--but I hate those girly movies.

I am an avid reader, however I do enjoy the occasional movie. Of course it really depends on your taste, but movies that I have enjoyed are

Mr. Hollands Opus with Richard Dreyfuss, Olympia Dukakis and William Macy-about a school teacher.

Men of Honour - Robert DeNiro and Cuba Gooding Jr. A true story about the first black American Navy Master Diver..

Nothing to Lose - Martin Lawrence and Tim Robbins - a laugh out loud comedy.

Maybe we could keep this post going with reviews of movies.

Pommy - thank you so much for your reply. I LOVED Mr Holland's Opus - maybe we have similar tastes??"?

I am going to go and see if I can rent the other two you mentioned - sssssooooooooo looking forward to it. I will post back my opinion - thanks again (to all who answered too).

Pommy have you watched the Bucket List?

I wake up every day thrilled to bits we have a television to be honest. Peter and I love tele. Have to admit pay t.v. has too many repeats but U.K. t.v. is great (still too many repeats) but we find the Health Channel and Bio and Arena and many pictures can find something to watch. We love the Egg Heads (Quiz) every morning and still love Hyacinth Bucket and On The Buses and even the many times we have, we still do watch Are you being Served etc. and I am always happy Peter has the Footy on tele. it gives him SO much pleasure and the computer which is amazing.

We sometimes hire 10 videos for $10 - what a great lot of watching for such a cheap price. sorry Mrs. Innes I cannot think of any in particular but many quite good.

I do believe Seniors in the main a happy bunch and I know Peter and I enjoy our lives and grateful for what we have and receive.

Did I say "Our new kitchen is wonderful" oops sorry but as Big Kev. used to say "I am excited"

Have a lovely night.

Phyl.

Our local video stores have now gone out of videos, only DVD's, but not all is lost, because they've sold , or maybe donated their stock to a local charity, which lends them out for only $3, with $1.50 back in credit for the next one you "hire". Very cheap, even if the movie is a bit of a dud.

Mrs Innes - I have seen "The Bucket List" and I loved it, so maybe we do share the same taste. I look forward to hearing your views on the other two, and also some recommendations from yourself and other posters.

I just googled The Bucket List--and it sounds like it might be a good show---I also got one out a few months back--I l think it was an older one and I can't remember the name but it had Robyn Williams in it --he was a Dr for Psych patients and it was a really nice story once you got into it

I have seen a VERY good movie (on DVD), called "The prestige" or "Prestige"

It is a rather silly title, because it tells you nothing until you see the film.

The film is about two magician in the early XX. century, when magicians were as popular as rock-singers these days.

It was a long time ago when I seen such a well made movie. Maybe you would enjoy it too :)

Mrs Innes, I belong to Web Flicks and you can borrow 3 or more dvds at a time. There is a huge range and a blurb on the type of movie, maybe that would suit you.

I am thinking of getting out one called Gran Torino--

Mrs Innes, there was a movie starring Robin Williams as the doctor- Patch Adams, about the guy who wanted to be a doctor and did not fit the mould and he is known as the doctor who introduced laughter as part of treatment. Do not know if the movie is called Patch Adams but I guess the video shop would know and it is a funny and moving film.

What about some of the old but goodies, Cape fear with robert mitchum, westerns, are you into science fiction or horror( I am) , do not like mushy movies much as I am quite a tomboy (yes even at the age of 61) but I did love Sleepless in Seattle.

I am managing to hang onto to Foxtel (certainly not the top package by any means) because I love the history channel, the national geographic, hallmark and so many others, the classics channel is a goodie because apart from it showing a lot of old tv shows I like it does have movies on it too.

Toot good on you--Patch Adams--thats they one I was talking about b4--you sound like you like the sort I like--I hate mushy stuff and girly movies--but I also did like Sleepless in Seattle--I also like Machurian Connection--(spelling)
