Couldn't agree more. Plus the hypocrisy of the Labor Party who described Christmas Is. as a 'white elephant'. Now of course, it's bursting at the seams, so Rudd lets a number of them jump the queue, gives them visas, and blow those who do the right thing and apply legally.

The cost would mean nothing to him...taxpayers money funding the next round of Labor voters.

clay, why would the Federal Government want to raise the percentage of the

GST, seeing that ALL the GST goes to the States, under a very complicated

formula & all social service benefits are all paid for Federally, including the

living & detention costs at Christmas Island ?

A boat carrying 45 people has been intercepted , 5 nautical miles from Christmas Island.

I've lost count how many boats or how many people.

Listened to Rudd on a radio interview trying to tell the interviewer, that the percentage of illegals is in line with other places with the same problem.

The interviewer put the figure by percentage as 25% more than other countries.

Sen Chris Evans, 16/01/08:

Labor has long argued that the key to people smuggling operations coming to Australia is to work with our northern neighbours to attack the problem at source where these people operate, where they leave from. The Indonesians have been very cooperative in helping build better systems to ensure that people smuggling rackets are disrupted and attacked. And we want to work very closely with them in those endeavours, and I thought it was important that we send a strong message from the new government that Labor's very committed to working with them on those issues, and that's the purpose of the trip.

Boat no 18 for the year 2010 to date arriving...............more welfare budget monies to be paid out at 89% of Newstart meaning less for those already on welfare of some sort.

Come on Innes he has already stated he would take the GST off the States for his new Hospital controls. What will it be for next he claims he will not be beaten on this Hospital takeover plan (the Climate Change mess has fallen over I think that was the plan before.

Yes Big Val more boats in 2010 than the whole of 2009 which makes their border protection policy like a leaking sieve, and another nail for the Labor coffin.

I think as long as the Mad Monk doesn't disappear without trace in the outback he is looking more like a winner as Rudd's mob rapidly self destructs.

Hi supa2, Rudd can state what he likes, regarding the GST, BUT, he

can't touch a cent without the States ALL agreeing, OR having a

referendum. At least 2 of the States will probably be Liberal

controlled before the Federal Election is held. Do you really think

that Rudd would risk a referendum to remove a massive percentage

of their income. Rudd, may be a self opiniated, one man band, but,

he is a long way from being stupid.

Just a silly thought. He would not be past offering to up the GST to 15%

in return for the States agreeing to his proposal, but I think that a

move like that could cost him the election.

There is a very interesting development regarding the Protection

Visas. I cannot get reliable figures, but, it appears that MOST

legitimate applications from genuine applicants, with papers,

are rejected on the grounds that the Dept., case officer does not

accept that the claims are truthful & the Appeals Tribunal totally

backs this stance. HOWEVER, as far as I can ascertain, the Dept.,

has only rejected 14 of the boat people.

It is not well known publicly, but, under western law, if you are

accused of a crime, it is up to the State to prove that you are guilty.

But, under Departmental history, it is up to the applicant to prove

their case & the applicant does not have any right of full

disclosure. If, in the personal view of the case officer, the

applicants honesty is questionable, he will be rejected without

grounds for a Court Appeal.
