Blood Pressure numbers once great, now said to be high?

Do others find it difficult to understand whether to take Blood Pressure
Tablets prescribed by our Doctors because our Blood Pressure albeit
the same as it has always been is now deemed high?
.
I have actually stopped taking mine (albeit a low dose) because I am wondering
why add another tablet with side effects if do not need it but for some
could be a life or death situation not to take Blood pressure
tablets....
We seem to have to weigh up what to do or what
not to do ourselves as each Doctors has a different view :(
My Blood Pressure seems too low for me on the tablet each day and I
get a bit faint....SO hard to know what to do.

When Heart Is in Crisis, High Blood Pressure is a Good Sign.

Study finds better survival rates a year after intensive care

HEALTHDAY ON MAR 23, 2010 AT 4:00PM
TUESDAY, March 23 (HealthDay News) -- High blood pressure -- even above the level ordinarily regarded as dangerous -- is a good indicator of long-term survival for people admitted to an intensive care unit because of chest pains that indicate a major heart problem, Swedish researchers report.

Their study, which involved 119,151 people admitted to ICUs for chest pain between 1997 and 2007, found the best one-year survival rate among those who had a systolic pressure (the higher of the recommended 120/80 number) at or above 163, according to a report in the March 24/31 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. The study was conducted at Swedish hospitals by physicians at Linkoping University.

Survival was poorest for the one-quarter of people who had the lowest blood pressure readings, less than 128 systolic, the study found. Their one-year death rate was 40.3 percent higher than for those in the next category up, with a systolic pressure of 128 to 144.

Overall, as blood pressure levels rose, the one-year death rate declined. Compared with people with a systolic reading of 128 to 144, those with readings between 145 and 162 had a 15.2 percent lower death rate, and people in the highest category, with a systolic reading of 163 or greater, had a 21.7 percent lower death rate.

There have been hints of such an effect in previous studies, said Dr. Gregg C. Fonarow, a professor of medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, who led one such study, which included people with acute heart failure.

That study did find improved survival associated with higher blood pressure, and other studies have found a similar effect during a hospital stay, "but this is the first study looking at one-year survival," Fonarow said.

Why should blood pressure normally regarded as dangerously high be beneficial? "It could be a marker for patients with better cardiovascular reserves," Fonarow said. "It suggests that those patients who can engender a very high response may have less severe disease or a more intact neuro-hormonal system."

But the results do not indicate that high blood pressure in such cases can be ignored, Fonarow said. "It should not be taken as saying that they don't need treatment," he said. "Patients who were treated for high blood pressure before release, with drugs such as ACE inhibitors and beta blockers that lower blood pressure, did better."

The study does show the need for worry about people in the ICU with lower blood pressures, Fonarow said. "It highlights that they are at much greater risk," he said. "Those hospitalized with blood pressure below 128 need to be followed more closely."

A study led by Dr. Kim A. Eagle, director of the Cardiovascular Center at the University of Michigan, predicted such an effect for people with acute coronary syndromes several years ago, Eagle said.

"We reasoned that a patient with very low pressure was in shock or at risk of being in shock, with very little in cardiovascular reserves," he said. "There is very little room for error in cardiac function."

Blood pressure can indicate how much cardiovascular reserve a person has, Eagle said. "If someone is in acute stress, having a heart attack, and can generate acute hypertension [high blood pressure], he is in good shape," he said.

The study raises the question of "how hard should we work at lowering blood pressure in such cases," Eagle said. "Probably it should be normalized, but we don't want to go beyond that. We don't want to put the patient into acute stress."

Dr. Manesh Patel, an assistant professor of medicine at Duke University, said that it's important to remember that the study looked at "a very special group."

"They're in a very high-risk situation," Patel said. "Blood pressure is a measure of how well your heart is squeezing. When you're in that situation, it's generally better to have a high blood pressure than not. High blood pressure is a surrogate for how much your heart is alive and squeezing."

The U.S. National Library of Medicine has more on chest pain.

It is confusing for most of the people. One should understand that this is a condition and not a recommendation!!! DBT

Do others find it difficult to understand whether to take Blood Pressure

Tablets prescribed by our Doctors because our Blood Pressure albeit

the same as it has always been is now deemed high?

+++++++++++++

Yes I do Phyl--mine was always considered very good but all of a sudden it is said --too high and now take B/P meds--and it is about the same and now the Dr tells me it is fine--go figure. I am very cynical BUT I think it is another way of the drug companies to sell more pills.

Be very careful Phyl on going off your meds without supervison as it can be very dangerous

Looks like I will be ok as I cannot remember the last time mine was down to 120.

More like 165/85

Is bad when the bottom line gets over 90 my doc said.

Mine was always around 132/67 to 147/72 and pulse rate of from 50 to 72 some times a bit lower--

Yes not good to have the lower one at a high reading

You do sound like a fit young bloke fwed. but mine is notmuch above yours

and my G.P. has me on Coversil which I am hearing more and more

about and the problems they are causing so I just gave up on them...

......................................................................................

Jane here is my scenario what would you do?

My G.P. was SO concerned re my Arrythmia she came around to see me

after me wearing the Holter Moniter for 24 hours instead of phoning or

waiting for me to go see her as I had an appointment in a week..

Bad yes very bad results o'night......SO she says "Phyl go straight to hospital

if the beats are erratic for 3 hours - straight to The Emergency Room as you

are running a big risk of Stroke and you should be on Warfarin"

Phyl. says " I am scared to the back teeth of Warfarin so NO".

.

My Heart Specialist whom I got to see two months later had given the name of the heart pills

to my G.P. so I had been taking these religiously (yep praying they are the right ones )lol

SO I tell the Heart Specialist I would be at The Emergency Section of our Local Hospital

every two weeks so they would all hide when they saw me coming.....

.

The Heart Specialist says "take an extra tablet and lie down and breath slowly as yes you

can hardly go to the Emergency Room SO often".

I honestly do not think many agree with each other so it is beyond confusing to know

what to do.

I had 8 hours of worry last week and poor Peter is a wreck worrying I will drop dead.

What can ya do.........................

Had a nice morning shopping mainly because WE HAVE AN ALDI lol

I would have to say no to a pacemaker now also as we are getting our Vibration Platform :)

and it might rattle it right out of place. I am kind of joking if it is a life or death sit.

Phyl.

I agree Phyl it is such a worry for you both--it would be nice if you could have complete confidence in the Drs but hell these days seems hard to.

Yes, PlanB, one has to consider the doctors who subscribe blood pressure tablets, and for what reason? One visit, pump up the arm and then a prescription is given. I gave up a highly stressful job in construction management due to the pressure of the "Bottom Line'. Turnover, production, rush rush, hurry. I just got sick of the situation and retired in December. We went on a cruise in January, I fully relaxed and came home feeling 100%. I have been home since then, doing odd jobs around the house, gardening, strolling around shops for odds and ends, (and groceries, to relieve my wife who still works). I feel GREAT! A recent visit to the doc., pump up the arm, YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE HAS NOT CHANGED< DID YOU STOP TAKING THE TABLETS? was asked. Yes, not taking them doc, .now that I feel really good. Oh, well at your age you should continue taking them because modern living and low income can be stressful.

Bye, doc., I have a 2km walk to home, stopping on the way to admire the scenery, and feel the freedom from drugs.

Stay well Gizmo I am sure that 2K walk helps.

I do think sometimes we have to take responsibility for our own health

as each Doctor has a different idea but I am sure you keep a check on your pressure.

.

We have had the Osram blood pressure monitor for quite a while and

it checks my beats along with the pressure so I know when it is behaving erratically :(

Not that I cannot also feel it though of course.

All the best

Phyl.

It seems Doctors want Seniors to take Statins and Blood pressure tablets

as a matter of course.

I agree very difficult for those of us prefer not to, but who knows maybe we should be on them.

I am hoping that Resveratrol works for us and does all the things we read Googling :)

On it a few days now Phyl so hoping it is doing us good.

I hope you are o.k. Phyl Our health is so important.

Yes and as B/P can change from min to min--it really should be monitored over a period of time and averaged out--I am sure the drug companies just want to sell more pills
