Beware new tax scam emails

With the new financial year upon us, be prepared for a volley of tax scams in your inbox. We just received our first scam email at YourLifeChoices telling us that "You have an outstanding refund" addressed from MyGov - Refund Support for the amount of $790.02.

As you can see with the email provided, there are a number of signs that it is a scam in regards to the formatting, the fact they capitalised MyGov in the subject but then myGov in the body. Especially the lack of name provided, instead opting for 'Dear Customer'.

Anyone should realise tax info comes fro ATO, not Mug of!

None of these organisations contact people via email or text messages.

When are people going to realise this! If you are unsure, ring the organisation yourself to find out whether they contacted you.

You do get text messages from mygov telling you that you have email to read at mygov.

I think another clue that this is a scam is that if you have a refund due the ATO will either deposit it into your bank account or send you a cheque. ATO official communication is usually only by post.
