Best and worst dishwasher detergents revealed

Consumer advocate CHOICE has tested and revealed the dishwashing detergents you should add to your grocery list and which ones you should avoid.

Aldi’s Logix Platinum 18 In 1 Dishwashing Tablets Lemon took out first place, with a score of 78 per cent.

“The Aldi tablets that received first place were actually one of the cheapest detergents in our review, at just 19 cents per wash. This goes to show that price is no indicator of performance, and you don’t always have to spend a lot of money to get a good result,” says CHOICE expert Ashley Iredale.

“The Aldi tablets that came in first even outperformed all of the market leading Finish Powerball tabs that we tested, which cost from 32 cents to $1.13 per wash.

“However, one of the Aldi powders that we tested received a place in the bottom three, so make sure you don’t grab the wrong one at the supermarket.”

CHOICE tested 26 dishwasher detergents to see how they performed at removing food stains including egg yolk, rice starch, baked on cheese, mince meat, red wine, and coffee.

“CHOICE’s experts have over 30 years of experience in dishwashers, so we know exactly what to test for when it comes to finding the best dishwasher detergent for you,” says Mr Iredale.

The top three dishwashing detergents were:

Aldi Logix Platinum 18 In 1 Dishwashing Tablets Lemon – overall score: 78 per cent

Powerball Quantum Ultimate Pro 0% Tabs – overall score: 76 per cent

Powerball Quantum Ultimate Pro Tabs Lemon Sparkle – overall score: 76 per cent

The three worst dishwasher detergents were:

Earth Choice Dishwasher Powder Lemon Fresh– overall score: 46 per cent

Woolworths Shine Dishwasher Powder Concentrate Lemon – overall score: 47 per cent

Aldi Logix 2X Concentrate Powder Lemon – overall score: 49 per cent

Don't know about Earth  Choice but Ecostore Lemon powder works just fine for us and is a fraction of the cost of tablets

We only use one brand and have for years so I cannot compare the dishwashers cubes.

[Finish] we have been using for donkeys years. try to avoid the citrus one though.

But as for the liquids in the sinks at the kitchens I have used over the years there is only one brand that I would say is very good!

That is the Palmolive Brand I buy the amtibactarial type.

There is another type called 'green' which I keep in the laundry drawer for clothing that has crease on it, it is very good for getting crease out of fabrics!

I recently headed to the Health Food shop to change my dishwasher detergent after becoming concerned with all the chemicals we are using and consuming. I bought a plant-based detergent which works very well - better than the chemical ones in my opinion, and doesn't leave that horrible film on everything either. Much safer to use.
