Barnaby Joyce attacks live sheep export 'zealots' at heated rally of WA farmers in Katanning

Barnaby Joyce has issued a rallying call to defend Australia's live export trade to a crowd of about 1,000 farmers in Western Australia's south, after footage showing heat-stressed and dying Australian sheep sparked a public backlash against the multi-million-dollar industry.

The Member for New England received a warm welcome in Katanning, about 280 kilometres south-east of Perth in Western Australia's sheep farming heartland.

He said if recent threats to shut down the live sheep industry were successful, the "zealots" would then come for the live cattle industry and then the transport and poultry industry.

"What we're up against, is like a religion," Mr Joyce said.

"Zealotry. And they're not going to stop with just the closure of the live export sheep game, that's not where they stop. These people haven't got a partial religion, they've got an absolute religion."

We watched this on the ABC last evening, think Joyce needs to do the trip with the sheep before he opens his mouth again.

Thought Barnaby was on Paternity Leave on for 11 weeks and would not be back until the next Parliamentary sitting in August ?

Hope the Taxpayer is NOT paying for this

Of course, the taxpayer is paying him he would never fork out himself -- he is the lowest of the low and has no heart I wish he had to cope with what those poor Animals have too

It sounds like the Farmers have no hearts either -- it all about the MONEY and they don't care a hoot about the dreadful treatment these Animals are going through -- I defy anyone to think that the way these Sheep and all other Animals  are treated in live export is worth selling their bloody souls for plus the horrendous things they are put through when they -- arrive there -- having their leg tendons cut and shoved in a bloody boot of a car -- and then God knows what other horrors while being killed.

This live export HAS TO STOP,  I have emailed the Shadow minister and the now Ag Minister and not a word have I got back.

All I can say is IT is NO way to get themselves re-elected --

Good idea to have the politicians accompany the sheep in similar conditions where the sheep are for the duration of the journey. If they can do this happily then they may have a case!

Yes and if they survive they can break their legs at the other end to fit a number of them in a boot of a car.

Put this useless arsehole, his whore and bastard on one of these ships to sail into the sunse to die on the way!

trood, you just showed your true ignominious cadaverous corpse of a person you truly are

Yes I agree we should pack all the poliitions into one of those live animal ships and see how they like their trip, that is if any survive. Maybe it's a good way to get rid of them and their heartless ideas.Since when has it been alright  to  treat animals with so little compassion. Between Farmers and Polititions there seems there is the idea that they can do whatever they like while the rest of us have to obey certain rules. He calls those that oppose him Zealots because they oppose him and his cruel ideas when he has shown how little moral character he has. Of course the tax payers are probably paying him since when do pollies ever pay for anything. I am proud that I HAVE A HEART AND OPPOSE THIS CRUELITY TO SHEEP,CATTLE AND POULTRY.

FULLY agree with the above

Totally agree with you!!

Would love to see Barnaby sail off into the sunset under live export conditions ASAP.

He's the most hypocritical, foot-in-mouth, fake-outraged, limelight-hogging, gimme-the-perks, poor-me pollie/person I've ever seen on air ... and that's saying something.

Yes, can’t stand to see his smug face when he is spouting off,!!

As the former federal Minister of Agriculture, Barnaby Joyce has shown himself to be cruel and uncaring towards animals. He is now in no position to to tell anti-live animal export protestors what to do. He is now Mr. Wicked and Cruel.

What is he doing giving these talks anyway he is on leave --PAID BY US

Most definitely agree!

I wrote a very to the point letter --email to David Littleproud and I got this back today I guess it is one that he sends out to all as it never had my name on it just Dear Sir/Madam,

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Sir/Madam

I share your concern for the appalling treatment of Australian livestock as you have expressed in your correspondence to me. Animal cruelty in any circumstance is abhorrent and must be condemned. What I saw in the footage horrified me. I am determined to make the trade accountable for its actions and ensure that if the trade is to continue, it is based on significant improvements to animal welfare.

As you may be aware, I commissioned a short, sharp review by veterinarian Dr Michael McCarthy to assure the health and welfare for sheep being transported to the Middle East during the northern hemisphere summer. The Coalition Government accepted all 23 recommendations made by Dr McCarthy. The Department of Agriculture and Water Resources implemented most of the recommendations immediately and is making it a priority to action those remaining. Some recommendations will take time to implement, including a revised heat stress risk assessment model based on animal welfare, rather than mortality indicators, which is subject to further testing and consultation.

Changes to the regulation of the trade include:

A reduction in stocking densities so less sheep will be carried on a vessel at any given time. This means sheep will get up to 39 per cent more space (with stocking densities being reduced by up to 28 per cent). The reportable mortality level will be halved from 2 to 1 per cent, which means if more than 1 per cent of sheep die it must be reported and investigated. All vessels carrying sheep to the Middle East during the northern hemisphere summer will be equipped with automated watering systems.Independent observers are being placed on every livestock export voyage by sea from Australia - not just the sheep voyages during the northern summer – reporting directly to the independent regulator.

Dr McCarthy’s report and more information on actions being undertaken in response can be found at agriculture.gov.au/LAE.

I have also commissioned a review to ensure the regulator has the capability, culture and investigative powers to make sure exporters who do the wrong thing are held to account. I look forward to receiving the recommendations from the Moss Review on 24 August 2018.

In the meantime, we have initiated other measures designed to increase the transparency and culture of the trade and its regulation. These include establishing a whistleblower hotline (1800 319 595) that will allow those who witness bad behaviour in the export industry to come forward anonymously and without fear of retribution, and developing a sustainable independent observer program that will provide additional assurance about exporter arrangements in managing the welfare of the animals on board. The government has also introduced a Bill into Parliament to increase penalties for exporters and others in the supply chain who breach Australia’s laws. These measures will assist in deterring non-compliance and encourage exporters to meet the highest possible animal welfare standards at all times.

You may be aware of the regulator’s recent action to suspend the licences of two export companies. All applications for exports are considered by the regulator on their merits and in accordance with the relevant legislation. As these investigations are ongoing, I will not make further comments.

The government supports a sustainable livestock export trade but expects exporters to continue to work hard at meeting their animal welfare responsibilities. A ban on the whole industry would unfairly punish those exporters and farmers who have done no wrong. Many farming families and others in the supply chain remain devastated from the 2011 suspension and we have a responsibility to make sure that this does not occur. There are also countries that retain strong cultural preferences for live animals and the Australian livestock export industry is a key player in meeting this market demand. This point was reinforced to me in government meetings during my recent visit to the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Qatar. At the same time, the government remains absolutely committed to ensuring the welfare of livestock is protected in this trade.

Thank you again for raising your concerns about this important issue. It is the government’s strong intention to hold the trade to account in a manner that places animal welfare as the highest priority.

Your Sincerely

DAVID LITTLEPROUD

Yes, I received that response, too.

What a heartless nit wit. how would he like to make the journey and to be treated in a barbaric way at the end of the journey. shame shame on you Barnaby.

You can now see why the Australian population was disarmed by Howard.

You are So bloody right there Roy, ALL the dictators took the guns of the people B4 the S**t hit the fan -- just look at history --- and thats why Howard did it AND used a poor defenseless 6-year-old mind to do it too.

Labor gov 2007 - 2013 - didnt do a thing re live exports either.

BUT do note that only 2 PMs left as millionaries - Hawke and Keating.

Both Labor.

Rudd and Turnbull millionaires before entering Parliament selling off Dot.com co's.

Howard not one but served for most of his adult life as a pollie.

reading the above of all love eating the meat of these animals, the inclusion of the philistines these columns seem to attract while arguing between themselves about the best way of killing lifestock so as to please their so-called excuses of eating the meat of these innocent animals and at the same time attempting to justify their political views, plan b, yours has to be the greatest most stupendous, ill conceived, illiterate, llogical and dumbest comment in these columns, to see some contributors agree with your comments, one do's not have to ask themselfes why has this once great country been brought to its knees?

OK heemskerk99,

So you agree with the way these poor Animals are treated!?

I would like an explanation-- thank you,   on what you said,   I quote"

" plan b, yours has to be the greatest most stupendous, ill conceived, illiterate, llogical and dumbest comment in these columns, to see some contributors agree with your comments, one do's not have to ask themselfes why has this once great country been brought to its knees?

I get it heemskerk99, I wouldn't have put it quite the way you did.  It could have been slightly more ... shall we say, polite? And I certainly wouldn't have included a personal attack on PlanB, that was uncalled for.

I am an animal lover and abhor what I see on the news about live exports, but feel more than a little hypocritical complaining about the way we process animals for food while happily eating the meat. So I choose to stay out of these discussions for the most part, but I do understand where you are coming from.

And since I am here, I will throw in my own two cents worth.  While what we see on the news about live exports is abhorrent, and should stop, no question about that, we aren't always squeaky clean ourselves when it comes to the production of animals for food.

Maybe we should clean up our own backyard before looking over the fence.

Yes Leonie, we do have to clean up the way Animals are killed for food -- INCLUDING our own -- but the way they are exported AND then treated in the most horrific way even if they DO survive the sea trip is totally UNACCEPTABLE and should be not on, even for the farmers -- and if they had a heart they would not stand for it -- lets have slaughterhouses HERE and do it as well as we can --  lets ship it over frozen --

There is NO excuse for what is going on now.

Animals Australia are doing their best to stop live exports as well as cage eggs and sows in pens.

They have had much more success than others to date. Keep up the good work.

I'm a member and donate to ads etc  for TV when asked.  Everyone is after our money in donations today but I keep mine for animals who cant fight back so I like to think I am helping them a bit anyway.

Children come next but least some good laws are there to proctect them - even if not good enough for me

I want to bring back flogging for cruel acts to all defencless children and animals.

And even the DP for killing a child at the very least.

If we had the DP back - life wouldnt be as violent as it was the ultimate deterrent.

without it - all other sentences have become useless as too soft even murder carries a soft sentence today.

"If we had the DP back - life wouldnt be as violent as it was the ultimate deterrent."

My jury's out on that one Big Val.

No solid evidence either way from what I've read. Life was extremely violent in the past when purges, razings, hanging and beheadings were "normal" and rife.

As for cruelty to animals ... breaks my heart, not only in the food industry but the pet industry with "puppy farms" etc, RSPCA cases and environmental decline.

BUT ... the wholesale destruction of the environment and species extinction is much worse IMO. And Australia is up there with the best of them.

Australia has the fourth-highest level of animal species extinction in the world.

Statistics Source.
