Backyard wildlife

As I was walking across my back yard this morning, I saw this gorgeous creature waddling away from me and into the shrubbery. I got a real thrill, as I live in a densely populated suburban area.

How lucky you are Koko, I would have been thrilled too ,I actualy feel a little envious as I rarely see wildlife down here. Thanks for posting this picture ....Wobbly

Koko, it does give you a good feeling when you see

a wild animal, I back onto a golf course and a couple

of blue tongues made their home under the sleepout,

we would often see them early in the morning ,laying in the sun.

They are long gone now, but have visits from ducks every day now.

The most we had in the yard at one time was 22. it was a sight to see.

They were building a dam on the golf course and they came here.

Apologies, I meant to add, that is not the actual one I saw...as I don;t have the facility to take a pic and post.  But it's  very close in coloration  to the one I saw.

I've seen the little gekkos inside the house...even that gives a thrill, and at night when loquats are fruiting, we get fruit bats.

The gekkos in the house are likely to be the imported Indonesian barking variety which are displacing the native ones.  We don't seem to have many after the first population explosion, which is fortunate because they leave droppings everywhere.

Larger head, it could be a male.  They don't mind humans, but better left alone to cull any snail and roach populations.  They have stupidly small legs and feet, which children find funny if pointed out to them.

Dogs get rid of them unfortunately, especially Foxies and other terriers.

Its still a lovely Picture Koko regardless of who took it thank you for sharing....Wobbly

"The gekkos in the house are likely to be the imported Indonesian barking variety which are displacing the native ones. "

These are the little fellows I see.  They are about two inches long.

Wobbly, you're welcome.

Seth, how lovely. Although I'm in a very suburban area, it's an old suburb, lots of trees and a creek, so we see ducks too.

Nautilus, yes a pity the lizards are not safe, from dogs and cats.

Gekkos are one of my nicest memories of living in Darwin,we always had one or two in the house and loved them. wobbly

When we first came to this area {Black Rock----Beaumaris}

a lot of houses were among tee tree, unmade streets that

gave it a real country feeling, There was a lot of opposition

against bitumin and concrete strreets but now it is just another

suburban jungle. There was always some wild life to see,

the wife and I would go for a walk through the golf links

on a balmy summer night. where there were foxes, ducks huge

lizards etc. I now walk around the school oval feeding magpies

and you get to know them individually,

Great topic koko.

Goannas are good to have in your garden. Unfortunately domestic pets and wildlife do not mix very well.

Here is a pic of a glider which was killed by a domestic cat.

glider

Seggie.  Plenty of galahs (no, not looking in the mirror) around here lately. Don't know what's happened to the sparrows but guess those horrible Mynah birds may have something to do with them disappearing.  Unfortunately, it's the time for snakes to be appearing and two friends have seen them so be very very careful when walking the dogs.  Love to all.

I have some wild life here but it is getting much less due to darn cats--and their irresponsible owners that really don't give a hoot as to what they are killing, I have found Gliders and Ringtails --with their heads chewed off and many Blue tongues killed for the hell of it as well as many lovely parrots. These cats kill day or night, they are pets and are quite tame. I am appalled that the council does not have a rule about keeping cats in they do with dogs but not cats. I used to have the odd Koala and also a very large Goanna now gone due to the build up of the area.  It really makes me mad that the owners of cats don't keep them inside or confined

PlanB, it is disressing to see the damage done by cats and dogs.  I'm surprised your council hasn't caught up with many others, in Victoria at least,  where the law is that cats must be inside by a certain time...the reason being that most damage is done at night.  Another law is, that if a cat is found on another person's property, it can be trapped and brought to the council.  They are supposed to be micro chipped, so the owners can be identified.

I happen to love cats, but I recognise the danger they present to the birdlife in particular round my home, so have resisted getting one.  My dog is an indoors dog, and only occasionally goes outside to sunbathe.

That one looks quite different.  I didn't know there were other types invading :)Australia.

Yes they have to be chipped--and yes you can trap them but the trouble is they are just able to go and get them back and they do the same all over again--I have seen these cats walking around with a bird in their mouth in the day time so God knows what they kill of a night, cats are born killers--and kill day or night and we have a lot of national parks around here.   I love animals but hate the owners that don't give a darn

Not my hand or my garden, but sent to me by a friend.

I think the snails are gorgeous.
