Australia's most popular dog breed revealed

For the sixth consecutive year, the Cavoodle is Australia's most popular dog breed. Data from Petbarn has revealed one in five registered dog births in 2021 were Cavoodles, reflecting a trend that has continued since 2016.

The Cavoodle is a cross between the poodle and the Cavalier King Charles spaniel. Their popularity stems from their calm, friendly nature; the fact that they rarely shed hair and their almost unbearable cuteness.

Do you like Cavoodles? Or are they overrated? What's your favourite breed?

I'll take a pure bred poodle over the cross breeds any day.  But having two miniature poodles may influence my way of thinking.

I've found all the poodles I've owned were neurotic and unstable without exception.   The difference between a cross breed and a pedigree breed may not be very different.   Pure breeds give an indication of what sort of behaviour and temperament one can expect;  a cross breed may or may not give an indication of what to expect.

In terms of health either may be good or bad;  in cross breeds it's quite possible to get 2 dogs put together who both have the same bad genes;  in pedigree dogs inbreeding has been the death of many a decent breed bringing as it does, a reduction in the number of genes available to the offspring [and inherent problems with immunity].

Kyeho, mine certainly aren't neurotic or unstable. They are well behaved - most of the time - extremely friendly and very caring. They just love people and are well known around here for their friendliness. Even the postie stops to cuddle them. They seem to get classified as 'poncy' dogs but I've found them to be agile, outgoing and pretty rugged. Each to their own though

I have two toy poodles and I love them but I've also had cross breeds in the past that have been equally lovable and smart. I had one girl who was a Maltese/Shi Tzu x Cavalier and she was so well behaved and so very smart. She understood everything and I could talk to her as though she was human and she understood and would respond with a bark, even when I said 'say please, thank you or do you want...'. I think they all bring so much joy and love into our lives and it doesn't matter what breed they are, it's more about how you treat them.

I do think what breed of dog you have will play a role in what you can do with it.   Some breeds are not overly affectionate at all whereas others are all about affection.    I do agree that how you treat either is the key to having success with them as pets.
