Australian Bushfire Catastrophe - "Our Leaders Refuse To Listen"

If you want to hear the lot start from the beginning -- if you just want to hear what Greg Mullins has to say about the Government go to about 23 mins

If the "official" bushfire season extends from October, why did it take until January before the Fed government ordered more water dumping planes. If we're in a drought cycle, why are government bodies selling water to private companies so they can resell at a profit, and if we are in drought, why did it take so long before any plans were put into place to rectify/ameliorate this. Indeed, what plans have been/are being developed to overcome this issue, or are we going to have to put up with this total inaction ad infinitum?

Good questions? Why indeed?

The only people politicians really listen to is their spin doctors and those who donate funds to the party they represent. We need an ICAC now and not later. The donation legislation is a joke and needs to be tightened so that donations are published for all to see in real time and not months later. That way we just might see to whom the parties are really listening.

All donations to political parties should be made illegal with 30 days of an election and the use of Commonwealth funding for travel and all other expenses, usually disguised as Parliamentary business, should cease upon the announcement of the election date. This business of that only applying as of the date of the official Party Launch is a contrivance to get the taxpayer to fund the pollies election costs.

Well said

Tanker, you are totally correct. We don't live in a democracy we live in an auctionocracy, they don't govern for the people they govern for the highest bidders!

What a corrupt bunch we have running this country. Ignoring advice from people like Greg Mullins is a crime. So much would have been different had they been listened to.

Well said all,

This lot are all the same it seems -- Now Bridget Mckenzie has been down right dishonest giving out money to sports areas that would win her votes.

There are many in this party that have done some very dodgy things and seem to go to ground hoping that us taxpayers will forget --

Also MANY more in this party that still have a LOT to answer to us for but have been kept very quite.

The lot of them seem to have an arrogance about them and care less about anything but themselves

Nowhere has it been siad that McKenzie did anything dishonest. Well, PlanB, please back up your statements with some reasons why McKenzie broke the law and while you're at it, who are the MANY that have done some very dodgy things which have been kept very "quite" (sic)

Does the name Ros Kelly ring any bells?

Yes it does and SHE stepped down as Mckensie also should, I am not calling anyone out because they are of a particular party -- no matter what if they do the wrong thing then they should be kicked out, they are after all employed by us and they should remember that.

Susan Ley --used our money for her flying lessons/ Cash is having her legals paid for by taxpayers money/ Angus Taylor -- and the lies he printed/AND the water that has been handled illegally  - that's just a few

I put up the sites for you to read regarding Bridget.

What's your view of what Bridget Mckenzie did Horace Cope, anything to answer for,the audior general seems to think so,or nothing to see here,if it isn't dishonest could you please tell all of us what it is Horace so we get a clear understanding of the issue.

Mullins should know that talking to the PM about problems with imminent fire danger is a waste of time and is merely grandstanding. The people Mullins should have addressed are the state premiers who are ultimately responsible for fire fighting. Maybe he is suffering from Relevance Deprivation Syndrome.

Morrison IS the leader of the country and HE is responsible for keeping  it safe but he was too interested in getting budget back in surplus -- if he had acted earlier he would have saved a HELL of a lot of money

PlanB, I get that you dislike Mr Morrison and will twist anything you can to blame him for all Australia's problems including if you stub your toe, but for goodness sake, get your facts straight first.

The Federal Government has no responsibility for either preventing or fighting bush fires. That falls to the State Governments and even local councils. And the lion's share of the responsibility has to lay with the Green councillors who locked up state forrests and agricultural land on environmental grounds preventing fuel reduction in the fire zones for the past 25-30 years.

The Federal Government cannot just walk in and take over. They cannot just send in the armed forces either. The States have to ask for it. Mr Morrison did put the army on notice, but had to wait for the request to come from the States before he could order them in. How do you think the army could mobilise so quickly once Mr Andrews asked for help?

The Royal Commission may come up with causes of these recent fires but I seriously doubt any will be new. After each recent fire disaster there has been an enquiry and each time the causes have been the same - allowing the build up of fuel. Add to that the over population that is pushing people further into bush areas with the consequent extra load on water supplies and there is a recipe for disaster as we now see.

And as for the ridiculous assertions that climate change is to blame, I have yet to hear a single serious  solution put forward to counter it. Fossil fuel mining in Australia is not responsible for the fires. The fires were here long before anyone was mining coal and will be here long after mining stops.

A KSS. The greens have not ever been in power and have no power over anything. They have not locked up anything.

Ted Wards, local councils are responsible for local management of bush fire prone areas and it is these local green councillors who have locked up those same areas on environmental grounds also preventing farmers clearing thier land. A check of the facts Ted would serve you well. The Greens (aided and abetted by Labor of course) have a great deal to answer for.

In times of a National Disaster, and this is what these fires have been called, then it is time the PM and Federal Government took control, after all that is what he was elected to do and what he is paid for.

On 29 May 2019 The Prime Minister of Australia (not Australia minus The States) announced "responsibility for drought will be transferred to the water resources minister, David Littleproud, who remains in cabinet and adds rural finance, natural disaster and emergency management to his title."

If as the Prime Minister says, 'The States and Territories are responsible for their own fire, disaster and emergency management', which region then does David Littleproud have responsibility for?

If the answer is to coordinate with the States, then why didn’t he until it was too late?

Oh and by the way I would think that Morrison will be suffering for  'Relevance Deprivation Syndrome.' soon

Much like yourself eh PlanB?

This "for me only me" government should be kicked out by the Queen's Representative Now, not in two years. Most of the fire ravaged places would not have burnt to the ground if they had listened to the people who knew what to do.

I agree ronloby fully --

Agree with Horace Cope.

Fire fighting is a STATE ISSUE, not Federal.

"Plan B" and "Old Grey", I suggest you read the Constitutions, both Federal and States.

In that you will see that the Federal Government was set up as Federation of the SOVEREIGN States to be responsible for matters relating to issues to do external matters, and for collection and distribution of taxes, in proportions agreed with the States. There have small adjustments since federation, as most changes require a referendum to alter.

The States retain all oither powers, Electricity, Gas, Water, Sewerage, Public Transport, Roads, Health, Emergency Services, etc.

The only way the Federal Government can act is as a response to a STATE GOVERNMENT "REQUEST". Even then it is only able to provide funding as requested, and the use of the Military for releif, recovery, and logistic purposes as requested.

You both appear to be taking the attitude that because a person held a position that they are correct.

Unfortunately many people, including journalists, commentators, politicans, and even teachers and University professors, are just as uninformed, or even moreso than the many people who have come from other countries.

i would suggest in future just as you don't trust politicans, that you don't trust anything that is alledgedly correct, from any source without checking out yourself.

I recently hasd a friend share a post on social media stating that a certain action could be taken under a particular Act of Parliament.

Rather than taking it at face value, I downloaded the Act, and took two full days to read.

Nowhere was the quoted statement even hintedat within the Act.

I messaged my friend and suggested to be more careful sharing posts if you haven't checked to see that they are true.

On the subject of fires.

Fires can be started in a number of ways,

Lighting, sun shining on glass or tin or something similar, spontaneous combustion as in hay, or as a consequence of human actions either accidental, carelessness, or a deliberate action. We need greater training of all peoples in the prevention of fires starting.

Fires are not started by Climate Change.

Fires burn because they have fuel. To prevent or reduce fires we need to reduce or minimize the fuel load. That can be done by controlled burns, keeping areas clean around properties, etc.

Climate change CAN affect the fuel because it dries out quicker, therefore burns more intensly.

Large bushfire and wildfire continue to burn because we fail to contain them. If we contain them the will not have the impact.

We can contain by having clear firebreaks through forests, around farms, towns and settlements, as well as individual homes.

We should question why, and should we allow homes to be built in certain areas that are of greatest risk.

Too often we listen to those who just react to any situation, or comment by someone pushing an ideology, instead of ourselves looking at the issues, and identifying the important facts based on the correct facts.

In other words always check for yourself, don't believe everything.

Good comments, 45er. I only wish to add that

a. The States and State Fire Services have fully stuffed up by not being adequately prepared, due to inadequate hazard reduction, inadequate policing (by cameras, drones, helicopters, physical presence) to prevent / catch arsonists, and inadequate number of large water bombing aircrafts to attack and put out fires BEFORE they got big. Berejilklian was instead planning spending a Billion dollars on rebuilding working Stadiums to please football bodies.

b. Morrison and Turnbull are seriously at fault as they rejected the request to the Senate Inquiry in 2017 for a National Fleet of large aerial water bombers. That was a massive failure for which he is paying in Billions now, besides the masive effects on lives lost, property losses, and of course the animals & birds, including livestock, destroyed.

Then 45er it is time the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT changed the laws to allow the State laws to be overridden in times of National Disasters, nothing has to stay the same way forever, when were these laws drafted, back in the Stone Age?.

WE should bee buying fire fighting planes and such -- and this will NOT be a STATE decision

Yes check for yourselves -- this I believe -- seems Morrison does not

When the next election comes around, at both state and federal levels, we need to remember the funding cuts to fire services and the collective deafness of the various LNP governments. These corrupt, inept morons need to be booted out of office.

I think that government inaction both at state and federal levels is indicated by the fact that there have been 57 formal public inquiries, reviews and royal commissions related to bushfires and fire management since 1939.

Some of the recommendations of the Stretton Royal Commission following the Black Friday fires of 1939 have still not been fully implemented.

In response to the 2009 Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission and various other inquiries, fire managers from government agencies in all states and territories prepared a National Bushfire Management Policy Statement for Forests and Rangelands ... see here. This policy statement was signed off by all COAG (Council of Australian Governments) members by early 2012 and published in 2014. As yet, there has been little action on implementing this policy.

The states all seem loathe to implement the recommendations and the federal government opts out by saying it's a state issue.

Source.

Regulations over land use, fire trails, clearing, are largely controlled by state councils where Green politicians have infiltrated and exert their influence to the extent that when the next elections happen:-  Billboards should go up everywhere:  "Remember the bushfires?  Do not vote Green.  Do not vote Green".

Remember the Bushfire?, do not vote LNP,  remember Scott Morrison refused to meet the retired Firies or listen to their advice and the country is paying a high price for that decision now. Do not vote LNP.
