Aussie retailers introduce shock security changes

Major department stores across Australia have taken the unprecedented step of fitting their staff with bodycams, to record any abusive or threatening customers.

Sim major department stores, including Target, will begin trialing the cameras in a bid to protect their staff after a surge in anti-social behavior after the pandemic.

National Retail Association chief executive, Dominique Lamb told the ABC that body cameras were becoming increasing more common for retailers.

"Predominantly, it is major retailers that are implementing technologies like this, mainly because obviously there's a certain amount of cost involved," Ms Lamb says.

"More and more, what we're seeing is aggression towards retail workers … we know there has been quite a spike around the use of weapons in retail crime and now it’s very much about keeping retail workers safe."

Do you think the cameras are a good idea? Have you ever seen someone behave in a threatening manner toward retail staff?

I have never seen retail staff threatened. I have seen them treated rudely by customers but never actually threatened.

No customer should be rude to anyone else.  This is not to become the accepted normal behaviour.    Staff are trained to be polite and respect all customers.  In a perfect world this is also hoped to be reciprocated.   I would never like to feel threatened anywhere.  I would never like to feel that I may be punched in the face by an unstable person.  I totally support employers protecting their staff and maybe the cameras will educate customers to bring good manners with them.

If this stops the attitude some people have towards staff in stores then, YES. It also gives proof of the action of the accused person if required

I haven't come across shop employees wearing these cameras...however, I am all for it.
