Aussie are no fun

According to the 2019 Fun Report, conducted by The Happiness Institute and Carnival Cruise Line Australia is is a 'fun crisis', with three in four saying they feel guilty when they have fun.

Aussies also gave the nation a fun rating of just 5.6 out of 10.

Four in 10 say they try to find a balance between work and play.

Almost half of the survey respondents think that life used to be more enjoyable in the past, when life was simpler.

Not having enough money to enjoy themselves (56 per cent), followed by feeling burnt out or not having had a holiday in a while (39 per cent) and having too many chores (39 per cent) were the main barriers to having fun.

More than a quarter of Australians (27 per cent) also said they don't have enough quality time with their family.

“Plain and simple, Aussies have forgotten how to have fun,” said Dr Tim Sharp, aka “Dr Happy”, from The Happiness Institute and co-author of the report.

“With people’s lives getting busier and busier, Australian families aren’t prioritising having fun or spending time with each other, and when they do enjoy themselves, they feel exceptionally guilty about it.

“Regardless of who’s to blame, all this signposts that something is out of balance in our lives.”

Well of course The Happiness Institute and Carnival Cruise Lines WOULD say there’s a ‘Fun Crisis’ .....

Sounds as though they’re trying drum up some business....

Ya gotta laugh!

Having been on at leas 6 Carnival cruises I can see why they don’t see us as happy- we’re still waiting for them to provide cruise sales compatible to the others.  For the past six years they’ve been good but now because of the popularity of cruising they’ve stopped the real discounts. Now they think it’s us who aren’t happy. Wonder why. As for the Happiness Institute these are probably people on $200k paid to determine how many flies are in a room at any one time.

Of course Aussies have fun. The larriken spirit is not dead. Aussies have more money these days,  they travel more, spend more on clothes and eating out. What I find interesting and suspicious is why the Happiness Institute would team up with a cruise line, if not for financial gain. That reminds me, I'd better go and book my next cruise, but it won't be with Carnival!

You don't have to spend money or go on a cruise to have fun!

I can think of a lot of ways of having fun that are much better than going on a cruise.

There does seem to be a lack of relaxed fun around. The news is always full about politics, that would take the smile off anyones face. Politicians pushing spin non-stop is another party killer. Then we keep getting hit over the head about the economy. The economy was supposed to serve us not the other way around.

Australians are amounsgt the hardest working people with many working hours of unpaid overtime and never used to happen so perhaps we are an unhappy lot and who can blame us.

Couldn’t agree less, if a gauge of happiness is going on a carnival cruise or listening to someone from an institute called happiness I am not sure if that’s a good guideline, is the happiness institute a real thing? I have nothing against cruising, my wife and I cruise several times a year and in the cruising fraternity carnival cruises doesn’t rate very high, but each to there own, I find Aussies have a great sense of fun.

Everyone has a different idea of what fun is, what is fun to one person is not to another.

Yup, Aussies have lost their zest for fun. Just returned from the Hawaiian islands and boy they know how to have fun,

Spectacular part of the world ABE, but mighty expensive, looks like you had a great time!

Coming back to the question "Aussies are no fun." I believe these days people think in order to have fun they have to spend up big. My wife and I like going abroad, but can also have a lot of fun in our own community. There's always a lot happening, become a tourist in your own area and enjoy all the free events. Most of them are really good, at least we think so.

YEP, I have decided "Aussies are no fun" so we are delaying our return. With temperatures of 7 degrees in London town, we're off to have some rum and coconut water on the beach. Won't be back for many a day, as the song goes !!!

So ABE, you’re off to the Land of the Flying Fish. I was there in 1989 when flying fishes were still plentiful. Now their numbers are under threat. Flying fish and cou cou is the national dish. If you like polenta, you’ll enjoy cou cou,  you have to try everything at least once. The locals will introduce you to it. Have a great time!

Couldn't find this thread. Hey Banj, we had a ball. Everything was great except for that cou cou thing you mentioned, in a nutshell, yuk. Spent a packet to go out and look for flying fish, no luck. Next night we went to a restaurant and there it was on the menu, had to pawn my gold watch to buy a dinner for two, tasted good though. Best of all was the scenery, the people, my Bajan friends and the rum and coconut water flowed!

My eyes are green with envy ABE! I notice Rupert and Jerry had the same idea!

Enjoying the surf. Looks like they're having a lot of fun!

Hi Sophie, we timed it well it seems! I believe Rupert and Jerry are genuinely fond of each other.

Acting like lovestruck teenagers, I love it!

Banjo, I really liked the cou cou. Perhaps if it was mixed with chocolate ABE might have found it more interesting!

I have come to the conclusion that people are too busy trying to out doing each other to have fun.

If you are more concerned with how many views your media site gets than your own enjoyment you arecwasting your time and money.  No one but you and your closest friends and family really cares how cute you think your kids or pets are, likewise they don't really care if you holidayed in London or Oakey.  The only reason the others even take notice is so they can have an opportunity to tell you how much better their holiday was.

The only people who really take an interest in your activities are those who want to know when you are away  so they can rob the place.

Do what brings you joy don't worry about what others are doing or thinking. You do not have to be carrying on like a demented teenager to be having fun, it is quite possible to have fun quietly.

Yep, and having fun, like having a sense of humour, is subjective.  In my misspent youth I thought getting off my face every weekend was a lot of fun.  Then I grew up, obviously a little ahead of my partying friends who often lamented, "You're no fun anymore."

I've also been told I have no sense of humour.   When the joke being shared was first trotted out somewhere back in the mid 50's and I ran out of guffaws (for that particular joke) somewhere in the 70's - yep, no sense of humour there.  I fully concur, I am definitely no fun.
