With the majority of Australians working from home for a period of time this financial year, working-from-home expenses will be claimed at a significantly higher rate than previous years.

The ATO will be on the lookout for Australians submitting new work-from-home expenses, without a reduction in travel expenses, laundering uniforms and business trips.

“We know many people started working from home during Covid-19, so a jump in these claims is expected,” assistant commissioner Tim Loh said.

“But, if you are working at home, we would not expect to see claims for travelling between worksites, laundering uniforms or business trips.

“You can’t simply copy and paste previous year’s claims without evidence.”
